PETER MOLIN Frederick Busch and Annie Proulx Forebears of Contemporary War Fiction n an Atlantic magazine article titled “Where’s the Great Novel about the War on Terror?” Matt Gallagher, the author of the Iraq War memoir Kaboom, explored reasons why, as of the time he wrote in 2011, so little fiction had appeared that Iaddressed America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. “Almost a decade after the first bombs were dropped in Afghanistan,” Gallagher states, “even the most avid bookworm would be hard-pressed to identify a war novel that could be considered definitive of this new generation’s battles.” Gallagher considers several reasons why so little contemporary war fiction had yet been published. The wars’ lack of closure had drained would-be authors’ clarity of vision and sense of purpose. Publishing whims favored domestic subjects aimed at women readers. It was only natural that memoirs constituted the first wave of literary response to the wars and given time more fiction will come. About all these points, and especially the last one, Gallagher is ambivalent. He notes the recent publication of Siobhan Fallon’s collection of short stories You Know When The Men Are Gone, about military life on Fort Hood, Texas, during a time of war, but hesitates to conclude that more war fiction will follow Fallon’s achievement. Iraq and Afghanistan, he suggests, may turn out to be like other “brushfire wars,” such as the Phillipine-American War at the turn of the 20th-century, that never generate “classic” novelistic depiction. Time would prove Gallagher wrong in regard to his last point, for in the coming years a number of story collections and novels heralded what Washington Post book critic Jeff Turrentine would later call a “Golden Age” of contemporary war fiction. -

Making Meaning Together: Information, Rumor, and Propaganda in British Fiction of the First World War
ABSTRACT Title of Document: MAKING MEANING TOGETHER: INFORMATION, RUMOR, AND PROPAGANDA IN BRITISH FICTION OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR. Rebecca Borden, Ph.D., 2012 Directed By: Associate Professor Peter Mallios, Department of English. Through an examination of fiction by H.G. Wells, Joseph Conrad, and John Buchan, this dissertation examines information as a category as it exists under conditions of modernity, and how the contours of and changes in definitions and understandings of modern information become more visible, and are likely accelerated by, the complex information challenges brought about by the disruptions of the First World War. Given that “information” is a key building-block in understanding systems of knowledge in modernity, this dissertation incorporates theoretical constructs describing information drawn from a variety of disciplines, all of which circle around the problems and concerns of the increasingly saturated, complex, and untethered nature of information as experienced by an individual in modern life. This project also highlights the role that rumor plays in modernity. The war years bring an expansion of government-directed information control, both in the form of actively produced propaganda and in the form of censorship, disrupting the conduits along which information travels under normal conditions. Rumor, generally considered a pre-modern form of communication, remains a part of modern information systems and provides a mechanism for making meaning when other sources of information begin to fail. This dissertation also considers how “wartime” fiction, as a category distinct from pre-war and post-war fiction, is a revealing domain of literature in its own right, and one that has been overlooked in scholarship on literature of the First World War. -
Review of the Meaning of Treason by Rebecca West
BOOK REVIEWS The Meaning of Treason. By Rebecca West. New York: The Viking Press, 1947. Pp. 307. $3.50. Treason is the measure of many things today. The rules defining it are among the few great rules of law of any society. Treason, by the scope of its definition and applica- tion, measures the effective difference between police state and democracy. Treason, by the frequency of its appearance, is a measure of the health and well-being of a society. Treason, because it is perhaps the most fundamental of crimes, is also a measure of our understanding of the deviant impulses and pressures that appear to make law neces- sary. It is with the last of these thipgs that Miss West is especially concerned in her study of twenty or so men brought to trial in England as traitors at the end of World War II. The result is a superb book contributing to law, to psychology, to journalism, and, with the greatest distinction, to the contemporary writing of the English language. Treason's harvest is not quite what we should have expected. The Germans appear to have placed a high price on inducing British treachery at even the lowest levels.x They concentrated on the weak and the uninformed and alternately coerced, bribed, and seduced. A few who were very young, or eccentric, or had genuine German ties succumbed. In one case the man was a traitor technically only because the overshrewd Germans, suspecting him as a spy, delayed so long on his application for German citi- zenship. If this were all, the study of the trials would serve only to corroborate the remark- able morale of the English during the war, and would be a study only of the pathetic and the eccentric. -
Psychological Effects of War in All Quiet on the Western Front
Tofil 1 Ashley Tofil ENGL 2112 – ENGL 4810 Dr. Bennett 22 July 2016 Psychological Effects of War in All Quiet on the Western Front Erich Maria Remarque wrote All Quiet on the Western Front with one simple goal in mind – “to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war.” The brutal trench and chemical warfare of World War I was enough to kill millions of men. However, millions more were destroyed by the psychological ramifications of fighting such a war. Through Paul Bäumer’s narrative, the reader gains a greater understanding of how the war destroyed the men’s youth, ruined their memories of home, and forever altered their relationships with their families. The reader is also able to glean the one saving grace – the comradeship that allows the men to cling to sanity in the hopes of making it home in one piece. The brotherhood that the soldiers at the front find with each other is the only factor capable of mitigating any of the loss they suffer. At the promising age of eighteen, Paul Bäumer and his classmates enlist in the Army because of the forceful persuasion of their schoolmaster, Kantorek. These boys implicitly trusted their adult mentors, but “…the first death [they] saw shattered [their] belief” (Remarque 12); in that moment Paul also loses his youthful innocence. “There are seven stages of life, and… the transition from adolescent to adulthood is critical… this stage transition was shattered, and that… will have profound effects on the abilities of the soldiers to adapt to post-war life” (Hunt 491). -

Dial Press, 1951; Reprinted by Vintage Books, 1980, Shelby Foote at the Cross Roads of Our Being The Civil War was the crossroads of our being as a nation, wrote Shelby Foote, standing at that crossroads as the author of The Civil War, the now classic three volume narrative. Having finished that monumental history, Shelby Foote the novelist stood at his own crossroads as a writer. He took on the Civil War as a job of work. Having published Foote's Shiloh, one of the shortest novels of the war, Random House asked him to write a short history of the war. Such symmetry must have been appealing to publisher and author, assuming great appeal for readers. But the war is a web, and if you touch it at any pointà. So six years after Shiloh, volume I appeared, almost 20 times longer than Foote's novel. In 1963, volume II appeared at the high water mark of the Civil War Centennial, amid a flood of other, and shorter, histories. Labored upon as long as the first two together, Volume III appeared in 1974, when interest in the war was at low tide. -

Amy Holguin Beauty and the Beasts: Rethinking fantastical paradigms that cast women as damsels in distress, in need of being saved from agentless men in a global context Scattered across the media and popular discourse, one can find many examples of lexis choices that dehumanise men. Former television star and now charged sex offender, Bill Cosby has been described as a “sexual predator.”1 Donald Trump, President of the United States and the defendant of many unresolved sexual assault claims, a “monster.”2 The actions that they are accused of no doubt merit such insults and disgust. On the one hand, the use of such terms highlights just how unacceptable, and against the values that we hold synonymous with humanity, such assaults against women are. Confronting such behaviour has enabled the rise of movements such as #metoo. Victims everywhere are finding confidence that their voice will be heard, and this conduct will no longer be accepted or silently brushed under the carpet. Yet, I argue that by dehumanising perpetrators, we are allowing them to be considered as devoid of autonomy and choice. A beast cannot be held responsible for its actions. Monstrosity is its inherent and unavoidable nature. Rather, it is necessary to concurrently condemn this behaviour, while emphasising that such conduct was not predestined but the product of choices made by conscious actors. Moreover, such language and ideas of sexual predation are frequently evoked in state and nationalist rhetoric. Outsiders are stereotyped as agentless, morally repugnant and naturally predatory to further anti-immigration and interventionist campaigns. Thus, decoupling sexual assault and suggestions of the inherent bestiality of men, firstly, emphasises that perpetrators of sexual violence were fully responsible for the choices they made, and secondly, belittles euro-centric arguments that present outsiders as fundamentally dangerous.
