Kathmandu: ICIMOD About this Volume The high-altitude rangelands in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region share boundaries with several other ecosystems such as forests, wetlands, and agricultural land. At present, most of the high-altitude rangelands and their interfaces are suffering from degradation, desertification, and soil erosion, which are further aggravated by climatic and anthropogenic factors. However, there is a lack of knowledge and information on the ecological role of high-altitude rangelands and especially their interfaces; more information is needed as a basis for developing and implementing plans for conservation and sustainable management of these fragile ecosystems at a regional, and even global scale. This volume has been compiled as a first step in addressing this knowledge gap. It contains a collection of papers and scholarly articles by ecologists, natural resource managers, and other professionals working on the high-altitude rangelands of the HKH region. It is divided into four sections. The first section focuses on a review of high-altitude rangelands and their interfaces. It discusses the definition of ecosystem interface at a landscape scale and provides detailed information on alpine ecosystem interfaces considering the current state of knowledge on the biophysical features and major conservation issues and management strategies in the transboundary landscapes of the HKH region. The second section highlights the distribution patterns and climatic parameters of one of most important alpine ecotones, the timberline, which is considered as an interface between grasslands and forests in high-altitude regions, the carbon and nutrient supply mechanism for timberline formation, and climate change and human disturbance leading to shifting of timberline ecotone. The third section focuses on wetlands in the region, in particular the causes of peatland degradation under overgrazing and emission dynamics of greenhouse gases from peatlands impacted by climate change. The final section provides an overview of the ecosystem services provided by the high-altitude rangelands. This edited volume has been prepared as a special contribution to mark ICIMOD’s 30th Anniversary. It is hoped that findings and recommendations given in this volume will be of interest to scientists, policymakers, students, and researchers. The rangelands interface with other ecosystems such as forests and wetlands to form ecosystem interfaces (or ecotones) at high altitudes, which are being affected by climate change and anthropogenic pressures throughout the HKH region. This is leading to a reduction in the provision of ecosystem goods and services, which not only threatens the livelihoods of local people, but also ultimately threatens the sustainability of the whole region.

We studied Ephedra sinica Stapf, Ephedra intermedia Schrenk et C.A.Mey. and Ephedra przewalskii Bge. to investigate the relationship between inorganic element content and these three species and their geographical origins. 38 elemental fngerprints from six major Ephedra-producing regions, namely, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Gansu, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Sinkiang, were determined to evaluate the importance of inorganic elements to three species and their geographical origins. The contents of 15 elements, namely, N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Na, Cl, Sr, Cu, Zn, B, and Mo, of Ephedra samples were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy. Elemental contents were used as chemical indicators to classify species and origins of Ephedra samples using a radar plot and multivariate data analysis, including hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal component analysis (PCA), and discriminant analysis (DA). Ephedra samples from diferent species and geographical origins could be diferentiated. This study showed that inorganic elemental fngerprint combined with multivariate statistical analysis is a promising tool for distinguishing three Ephedra species and their geographical origins, and this strategy might be an efective method for authenticity discrimination of TCM.

    Atlas of Rare Endemic Vascular Plants of the Arctic Technical Report No. 3 About CAFF Theprogram for the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) of the Arctic Council was established lo address the special needs of Arctic ecosystems, species and thcir habitats in the rapid ly developing Arctic region. Itwas initiated as one of'four programs of the Arctic Environmental Protcction Strategy (AEPS) which was adopted by Canada, Denmark/Greenland, Finland, lceland, Norway, Russia, Swcdcn and the United States through a Ministeria! Declaration at Rovaniemi, Finland in 1991. Other programs initi­ ated under the AEPS and overlaken hy the Are.tie Council are the ArcticMonitoring and assessment Programme (AMAP), the program for Emergency Prevention, Preparcd­ ness and Response (EPPR) and the program for Protection of the Arctic Marine Envi­ ronment (PAME). Sinceits inaugural mccti.ng in Ottawa, Canada in 1992, the CAFF program has provided scientists, conscrvation managers and groups, and indigenous people of the north with a distinct forum in which lo tackle a wide range of Arctic conservation issues at the cir­ cumpolar level. CAFF's main goals, which are achieved in keeping with the concepts of sustainable developrnertt and utilisation, are: • to conserve Arctic Jlora and fauna, thcir diversity and thcir habitats; • to protect the Arctic ecosystems from threats; • to improve conservation management laws, reg ulations and practices for the Arclic; • to integrale Arctic interests into global conservation fora. CAFF operates rhrough a system of Designated Agencies and National Representatives responsible for CAFF in thcir rcspcctivc countries. CAFF also has an International Work­ ing Group wh.ith has met annually to assess progrcss and to develop Annual WorkPlans.

It is the individual who has to accept certain responsibilities in order to maintain health like taking responsibility for a good diet, personal hygiene, cultivation of healthy habits and taking disease prevention measures. There is a dire need to educate and sensitize people to the importance of cleanliness. Educational institutions can play a vital role in this matter as students are the future citizens of the nation. A small step from each Indian citizen is a giant leap towards fulfilling the purpose of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Clean India’ campaign. At this point, I would also suggest students to take up at least one hobby and sport along with their academics.
