JANE AUSTEN’S DEALINGS WITH JOHN MURRAY AND HIS FIRM by kathryn sutherland Jane Austen had dealings with several publishers, eventually issuing her novels through two: Thomas Egerton and John Murray. For both, Austen may have been their first female novelist. This essay examines Austen-related materials in the John Murray Archive in the National Library of Scotland. It works in two directions: it considers references to Austen in the papers of John Murray II, finding some previously overlooked details; and it uses the example of Austen to draw out some implications of searching amongst the diverse papers of a publishing house for evidence of a relatively unknown (at the time) author. Together, the two approaches argue for the value of archival work in providing a fuller context of analysis. After an overview of Austen’s relations with Egerton and Murray, the essay takes the form of two case studies. The first traces a chance connection in the Murray papers between Austen’s fortunes and those of her Swiss contemporary, Germaine de Stae¨l. The second re-examines Austen’s move from Egerton to Murray, and the part played in this by William Gifford, editor of Murray’s Quarterly Review and his regular reader for the press. Although Murray made his offer for Emma in autumn 1815, letters in the archive show Gifford advising him on one, possibly two, of Austen’s novels a year earlier, in 1814. Together, these studies track early testimony to authorial esteem. The essay also attempts to draw out some methodological implications of archival work, among which are the broad informational parameters we need to set for the recovery of evidence. -

A British Christian in Public Office: Lord Mackay of Clashfern J. Cameron Fraser* *Dr. J. Cameron Fraser is Stated Clerk of Classis Alberta South and Saskatchewan in the Christian Reformed Church. He also works at Parkside Home, a ministry of Streets Alive Mission in Lethbridge, AB. Dr. Fraser holds degrees from the University of Edinburgh, Westminster Theological Seminary (Philadelphia) and Trinity Evangeli- cal Divinity School. He has authored or co-authored three books and contributed to two more. Introduction The Anabaptists of the 16th century eschewed political involvement, as do many (although not all) of their spiritual heirs today. They understood Jesus to teach that civil government belongs to this world and that Christians as citizens of the kingdom of God should not hold office or actively serve earth- ly governments, to whom they are obliged only to offer passive non- resistance (Matt. 22:21, John 18:36; cf. Rom. 13:1-7). Martin Luther (1483- 1546), on the other hand, taught that since God rules over the whole world, He does so in two ways. Earthly kingdoms are ruled through secular and re- ligious powers by the enforcement of law, whereas members of the heavenly or spiritual kingdom of God are governed by the gospel of grace. Christians live in and may serve both kingdoms, although a competent unbeliever (“Turk”) as an earthly governor is preferable to an incompetent believer. John Calvin (1509-1564) made a similar distinction between the two king- doms and went on to say, “Yet this distinction does not lead us to consider the whole nature of government a thing polluted, which has nothing to do with Christian men.”1 He called “fanatical” the view that as members of the spiritual kingdom of God, believers have no responsibility to earthly powers. -

Esperanto, the international language, is a language developed to make it easier for people of different cultures to communicate. Its author, Dr. L. L. Zamenhof (1859-1917), published his "Lingvo Internacia" in 1887 under the pseudonym "Dr. Esperanto". It is now spoken by at least two million people, in over 100 countries. There are thousands of books and over 100 periodicals published currently. But what makes it any more international than French, English or Russian? Incorrectly termed ’artificial’ (the right word is ’planned’), Esperanto is specifically intended for international/intercultural use, so those who use it meet each other on an equal footing, since neither is using his or her native language. With national languages, the average person isn’t able to express himself as well as a native speaker or the gifted linguist. Thanks to its simple, logical, regular design, anyone can learn Esperanto fairly rapidly. A LIVING LANGUAGE Esperanto is a living language, used for everything people use any other language for. But it’s much easier to learn than a national language. Even people who can’t remember a word of a language they studied for years in high school or college need only months of intensive study to become fluent in Esperanto. -

Preface and Acknowledgments This is a book about books— books of travel and of exploration that sought to describe, examine, and explain different parts of the world, between the late eighteenth century and the mid- nineteenth century. Our focus is on the works of non- European exploration and travel published by the house of Murray, Britain’s leading publisher of travel accounts and exploration nar- ratives in this period, between their fi rst venture in this respect, the 1773 publication of Sydney Parkinson’s A Journal of a Voyage to the South Seas, in His Majesty’s Ship, the Endeavour, and Leopold McClintock’s The Voyage of the ‘Fox’ in the Arctic Seas (1859), and with the activities of John Murray I (1737– 93), John Murray II (1778– 1843), and John Murray III (1808– 92) in turning authors’ words into print. This book is also about the world of bookmaking. Publishers such as Murray helped create interest in the world’s exploration and in travel writing by offering authors a route to social standing and sci- entifi c status— even, to a degree, literary celebrity. What is also true is that the several John Murrays and their editors, in working with their authors’ often hard- won words, commonly modifi ed the original accounts of explor- ers and travelers, partly for style, partly for content, partly to guard the reputation of author and of the publishing house, and always with an eye to the market. In a period in which European travelers and explorers turned their attention to the world beyond Europe and wrote works of lasting sig- nifi cance about their endeavors, what was printed and published was, of- ten, an altered and mediated version of the events of travel and exploration themselves. -

It dates from 1986 when, on behalf of the then newly-established Scottish Crofters Union (now the Scottish Crofting Federation), Angus and I attended in Edinburgh a session of what was then called the Hill Farm Review – a means of fixing levels of livestock support. Our being involved showed why the SCU mattered – crofters, though the review affected all of them, having never before participated in this forum. We wanted, Angus and I, to register that the summer of ’86 had been a bad one. For months, we stressed, it had rained incessantly in the Highlands and Islands. Winter keep, we emphasised, was scarcely to be had. For weeks, we went on, it hadn’t been possible to find – from Unst to Islay – a beast with a dry back. The support regime, we insisted, had to reflect those facts. When we rose to go, a Borders farmer – a NFU representative – came over. He looked Angus up and down – and Angus was a big, strong fellow, the very picture of vitality. ‘I’m sorry,’ the farmer said to Angus,‘but you don’t have the look of a man whose crofting’s doing poorly.’ Angus didn’t pause for breath.‘Crofters,’ he replied,‘are like sitka spruce. We grow better in the wet.’ Angus MacRae was born on his parents’ croft in North Strome in 1931 and – apart from his National Service – spent all his 71 years in that locality. -

Hungarian Historical Review 10, no. 2 (2021): 243–266 TEKA: A Transnational Network of Esperanto-Speaking Physicians Marcel Koschek University of St Andrews [email protected] The Tutmonda Esperanta Kuracista Asocio (Worldwide Esperanto Medical Association, TEKA) was founded in 1908 at the Fourth International Esperanto Congress in Dresden and was the international medical association of the Esperanto movement. The aim was to “facilitate practical relations between Esperanto-speaking doctors of all countries.” The interest within the Esperanto movement was immense: after one year, TEKA had more than 400 members all over the world with a focus on Europe; one year later, there were more than 600 members with official representatives in about 100 cities. In Europe, a medical press in Esperanto had already been established. The approach of these journals was both simple and brilliant: the doctors presented the latest medical findings from their home countries in a peer review system and critically examined the articles in their vernacular. This made each issue a compendium of the most important and pioneering findings of national research. The numerous experts also had many other connections with, for example, the Red Cross and similar organizations. Thus, after a short period of time, TEKA brought together the expertise of countless physicians. This paper examines TEKA as a transnational network of experts before World War I. The history of the association and the role of Medicine within the Esperanto movement are briefly discussed. The focus is then on the various association journals and the circulation of knowledge. Finally, the essay offers a look at TEKA’s cooperative endeavors with the Red Cross. -
