PRESIDENT’S AWARD OF HONOR PRESENTED TO PAUL HARVEY

He was heard and seen everywhere for almost 60 years. His 24+ million admirers tuned-in every day just for that magnificent voice: “Hello, Americans!! This is Paul Harvey! Stand by for newwwsss!” His was ‘the voice of Middle America’ and ‘Silent Majority’ on more than 1,300 radio stations six days a week, and 120-something TV stations in syndication on local newscasts. Trademark telegraphic delivery, punctuated by patented pauses. A mix of news briefs, human- interest, celebrity updates, commentaries on national policy, and of course those “the Rest of The Story” stories. Written with warmth, respect, and relevance. All spoken from the heart from the Heartland. On every broadcast, his down-home storytelling was irresistible from “Page One” through “Page Two” to “Good Day!”. While working at St. Louis radio station KXOK he met and married “Angel”, a Phi Beta Kappa from Washington University. Then, they drove off to the bigtime in Chicago in her Nash in 1948. Their son, Paul Harvey Jr. has rightly said his parents collaborated and “created from thin air what one day became radio and television news.” Whether we realize it or not, every day, so many of us in this business, employ much of what ‘Paul Harvey News’ originated to communicate with our audiences. It is fitting NATAS Mid- America pays homage to an iconic national treasure.

24 2018 MID-AMERICA EMMY® AWARDS #EMMYMIDAM Peggy Breit KBMC, Kansas City, MO Silver Circle Inductee

Peggy Breit was a KMBC 9 News Reporter since 1982. She graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in journalism and mass communications. She has amassed several awards for excellence in broadcast journalism, including two regional Emmy’s. KMBC most recently won a Regional Murrow Award for Peggy’s passion and relentless pursuit in the LaMonte McIntyre story. LaMonte was arrested at age 17 and spent the past 23 years behind bars as part of a double homicide he did not commit. Peggy was there every step of the way as she developed relationships with LaMonte’s family and the Midwest Innocence Project. LaMonte was finally exonerated and set free. This is just one of the countless stories Peggy has devoted her unyielding energy and passion in and illustrates her commitment to our community and excellence in journalism. Two of Peggy's most memorable assignments were trips to El Salvador and Croatia, but she says the chance to meet new people every day and experience life all around the area from the perspective of its residents is the highlight of her job. Peggy says there couldn't be a job with more variety - fires, murders, gardening (one of her passions), a child prodigy... anything could be on tap for the day. And then it can all change on a dime when there's breaking news. "It's what keeps me on my toes, aware of the world and in touch with our community." According to Peggy, "It's been a wonderful choice of careers."

After being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010, John became an outspoken advocate for men to have screenings for the disease. “I became interested in broadcasting in high school. Long hours driving a hay swather during a couple of summers working on a farm had me making up play-by-play games in my head. I wanted to do sports. But I had the opportunity to work at my hometown radio station (KVGB) and do everything, from news to farm reports to being a disc jockey. I fell in love with broadcasting in general. Law school by day, news at night, and I was set to remain in journalism post-law school. I’ve ever looked back!”
