Without him, survivinggraduate school would have been impossible. vi ABSTRACT My dissertation explores the ideological meaningsattached .l ' to the CourtWits' representations of libertinefigures in their plays during the 1670s. In describingthe · Marquisde Sade, Michel Foucault wrote, "the libertineis he who, while yielding to all the fantasies of desire andto each of its furies,can, but also must, illuminate their slightest movement with a lucid anddeliberately elucidated representation" ( Order 209). This definitionis equally truefor the Restoration Court.,, Wits, an elite fraternityof literaryand political figuresknown for their hedonistic philosophy andEpicurean lifestyles that included George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham;John Wilmot, Earlof Rochester; Sir Charles, I l Sedley; Sir George Etherege; andWilliam Wycherley. Not the least partof these lifestyles was a culturalposing, a penchantfor self-consciously theatrical affectationsand adventures. Throughouttheir literary works, andespecially their dramas, the membersof this coterie drew upon their infamous reputations in order to cast versions of themselves as the central figures in the theater of Restoration court life. In particular, I argue that the Wits use these figures to resist the limitations imposed by aristocratic• ideology's rhetoric of national heroism andprogressive ideology's articulationof innate virtue. I conclude that these playwrights employ rhetorical strategies to expose Ithe• ideological limitationsof their day and, in doing so, resist their culture's move toward what Foucault callsbourgeois sexuality. To demonstrate,., this thesis, I examine nine plays written by members of this circle. Chapter One introduces the CourtWits' fraternityand defines what ,. I meanby the aristocratic, progressive, andlibertine ideologies. Chapter Two arguesthat Buckingham's TheRehearsal deploys libertineideology in the formof epideictic rhetoric to respondto aristocratic ideology's discourse of national heroism, transformingheroic drama into farce .. vu through gender parodyand thereby undermining its claimto verisimilitude. Chapter Three studies Wycherley'searly comedies, Love in a Wood, The Gentlema.nDancing Master, and The CountryWife, to arguethat these plays serve as a kind of deliberative rhetoric, a use of art to explore the possibilitiesof libertine ideology to reshape aristocraticsociety at this time. In particular, Wycherley employs libertineideology in these plays to reject progressive ideology's argumentthat honor is a virtuethat anyonecould cultivate through introspectionand moral behavior. Chapter Three examines the rhetorical choices of Etherege andWycherley in TheMan ofMode and ThePlain Dealer, respectively,arguing that eachturns away fromradical libertinismand embraces anintegration of the libertine into society's institutions. ChapterFive analyzes playsby Rochesterand Sedley to demonstratethat each pushes libertineideology to its most extremelimits in order to test whether it remainsa viable alternativeto aristocraticand progressive ideologies. Although Rochester andSedley maintain that libertinism is such analternative, by 1680 the Wits' fraternityand their experimentationwith libertinism disintegrates asits members find themselves alignedwith differentpolitical factionsduring andafter the Exclusion Crisis of the later 1670s.     JOHN DRYDEN AND THE LATE 17TH CENTURY DRAMATIC EXPERIENCE LECTURE 16 (C) BY ASHER ASHKAR GOHAR 1 CREDIT HR. JOHN DRYDEN (1631 – 1700) HIS LIFE: John Dryden was an English poet, literary critic, translator, and playwright who was made England's first Poet Laureate in 1668. He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the “Age of Dryden”. The son of a country gentleman, Dryden grew up in the country. When he was 11 years old the Civil War broke out. Both his father’s and mother’s families sided with Parliament against the king, but Dryden’s own sympathies in his youth are unknown. About 1644 Dryden was admitted to Westminster School, where he received a predominantly classical education under the celebrated Richard Busby. His easy and lifelong familiarity with classical literature begun at Westminster later resulted in idiomatic English translations. In 1650 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. degree in 1654. What Dryden did between leaving the university in 1654 and the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 is not known with certainty. In 1659 his contribution to a memorial volume for Oliver Cromwell marked him as a poet worth watching. His “heroic stanzas” were mature, considered, sonorous, and sprinkled with those classical and scientific allusions that characterized his later verse. This kind of public poetry was always one of the things Dryden did best. On December 1, 1663, he married Elizabeth Howard, the youngest daughter of Thomas Howard, 1st earl of Berkshire.

    James Blac k DRYDEN ON SHADWELL'S THEATRE OF VIOLENCE All admirers of J ohn Dryden can sympathise w ith H.T . Swedenberg's dream of o ne day "finding bundle after bundle of Dryden's manuscripts and a journal kept thro ugho ut his career. .. .! turn in the journal to the 1670's and eagerly scan the leaves to find out precisely when MacFlecknoe was written and what the ultimate occasion for it was. " 1 For the truth is that although MacFlecknoe can be provisionally dated 1678 the " ultimate occasion" of Dryden's satire on Thomas Shadwell has never been satisfactorily explained. We know that for abo ut nine years Dryden and Shadwell had been arguing in prologues and prefaces with reasonably good manners , chiefly over the principles of comedy. R.J. Smith makes a case for Shadwell's being considered the foremost among Dryden's many adversaries in literary argumentatio n, and points out that their discourse had reached the stage where Dryden, in A n Apology for Heroic Poetry ( 16 77), made "an appeal for a live-and-let-live agree­ ment." 2 T he generally serious and calm nature of their debate makes MacFlecknoe seem almost a shocking intrusion- a personally-or politically-inspired attack which shattered the calm of discourse. Surely-so the reasoning of commentators goes- there must have been a casus belli. It used to be thought that Dryden was reacting to an attack by Shadwell in The Medal of j ohn Bayes, but this theory has been discounted.3 A.S. Borgman, a Shadwell biographer, would like to be able to account for Dryden's "turning against" Shadwell and making him the butt of MacFlecknoe: Had he wearied of [Sh adwell's) rep eated boasts o f friendship w ith the wits? Had he become disgusted with (h is) arrogant treatment of those who did not applaud th e humours in The Virtuoso and A True Widow? Had he tired of DRYDEN ON SHADWELL'S THEATRE OF VIOLENCE 299 seeing Shadwell "wallow in the pit" and condemn plays? Or did some word or act bring to his mind the former controversy and the threat then made of condemning dulness?4 D.M.

We will begin with an introduction to the dramatist and the form and then proceed to a discussion of the play and its elements and conclude with a survey of the criticism it has garnered over the years. Section One: William Wycherley and the Comedy of Manners William Wycherley (b.1640- d.1716) is considered one of the major Restoration playwrights. He wrote at a time when the monarchy in England had just been re-established with the crowning of Charles II in 1660. The newly crowned king effected a cultural restoration by reopening the theatres which had been shut since 1642. There was a proliferation of theatres and theatre-goers. A main reason for the last was the introduction of women actors. Puritan solemnity was replaced with general levity, a characteristic of the Caroline court. Restoration Comedy exemplifies an aristocratic albeit chauvinistic lifestyle of relentless sexual intrigue and conquest. The Comedy of Manners in particular, satirizes the pretentious morality and wit of the upper classes.

    Shakespeare and Film: A Bibliographic Index (from Film to Book) Jordi Sala-Lleal University of Girona [email protected] Research into film adaptation has increased very considerably over recent decades, a development that coincides with postmodern interest in cultural cross-overs, artistic hybrids or heterogeneous discourses about our world. Film adaptation of Shakespearian drama is at the forefront of this research: there are numerous general works and partial studies on the cinema that have grown out of the works of William Shakespeare. Many of these are very valuable and of great interest and, in effect, form a body of work that is hybrid and heterogeneous. It seems important, therefore, to be able to consult a detailed and extensive bibliography in this field, and this is the contribution that we offer here. This work aims to be of help to all researchers into Shakespearian film by providing a useful tool for ordering and clarifying the field. It is in the form of an index that relates the bibliographic items with the films of the Shakespearian corpus, going from the film to each of the citations and works that study it. Researchers in this field should find this of particular use since they will be able to see immediately where to find information on every one of the films relating to Shakespeare. Te epistemological shif of 17th century is a turning point in the history of Wes- tern thought as it triggered a movement from what Foucault called from a “a deployment of alliance” to “a deployment of sexuality”; this reformulation of what Butler describes as “the regulatory practices of gender formation and division” which had been dominant until the scientifc revolution evidenced the vulnerability of all individuals when confronted with shifs in the conception of power. Restoration drama, straddling the medieval frame of mind and the pre-modern way of thinking, brings to light the tensions this shif provoked. Taking Butler’s ideas on the performativity of gender and vulnerability, Foucault’s views on power and resistance and Wycherley’s Te Country Wife (1675) as its basis, this paper studies the vulnerable position in which men found themselves, studying their daily struggles to main- tain the manhood attained through marriage and control of a household. El giro epistemológico del siglo xvii fue un momento decisivo para la historia del pensamiento en Occidente, ya que supuso el comienzo de un movimiento desde lo que Foucault denomina un “dispositivo de alianza” a un “dispositivo de sexualidad”; esta refor- mulación de lo que Butler llama “las prácticas reguladoras de la formación y la separación de género” que vienen siendo dominantes desde la revolución científca, pone en evidencia la vulnerabilidad de todos los individuos cuando deben enfrentarse a los sucesivos cambios en la concepción del poder.
