ARTSnews October 13, 2016 4 Volume 17, Issue 40

By way of Ontario, Pat Maloney is a Canadian songwriter, a storyteller, and a serious whistler. He’s a concerned citizen, with a busted acoustic guitar and a fake bass drum. He’s a too-tall, Ottawa ex-pat, singing songs as meaningful as he can muster, with a healthy, self- defaming sense of humor.

The shocked a country. The verdict divided a province. CBC reporter Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon covered the Oland case from the beginning. In Shadow of Doubt: The Trial of Dennis Oland, she guides readers through the twists and turns of the story, from the discovery of the murder through the police investigation to the events of the trial. Chronicling the evidence, including evidence never presented to the jury, she builds the cases for the defence and the prosecution, leaving the verdict in the hands of the reader.

A courageous pursuit of dreams spanning 60 years - all told through physical theatre without the use of props or costume changes.

ARTSnews October 13, 2016 5 Volume 17, Issue 40

A Sunday Affair marks the company’s first co- production with Caraquet’s Théâtre populaire d'Acadie, which will tour a French language version of the play throughout the province following TNB’s largest tour in over a decade with performances in Bathurst, Fredericton, McAdam, Miramichi, St. Andrews, and Woodstock, NB. Blending elements of physical theatre to form an almost Chaplin-esque delivery, A Sunday Affair is the story of a 60 year friendship between Father Tom and Josephine.

17. Micah Erenberg Band & The Wilder Sons at Grimross Brewing Co. Oct 15

Come see the Micah Erenberg Band and The Wilder Sons at Grimross Brewing Co., located at 600 Bishop Drive on October 15. Doors open at 7:30pm and the show begins at 8pm. Admission is $10 at the door.

Micah Erenberg is a storyteller, a singer/songwriter, an engineer, a producer, amulti-instrumentalist, a front man in a rock band, and a side man for anyone else. Micah’s music has been described as “bedroom country/pop”, with production qualities reminiscent of Beck and story-based lyrics reminiscent of Townes Van Zandt. His “tell all” style of writing makes for an incredibly captivating sound, and his songs cover all bases from sad and serious to happy and downright goofy. Micah continually finds ways to reinvent the art of song-writing using a blend of honest lyrics, catchy melodies and unique musical arrangements. Add the full band into the mix and you get the same songs in a whole new light. Like a well-oiled machine, the Micah Erenberg Band jams their way through meticulously rehearsed material, often improvising through instrumental sections for as long as they feel the need to, and yet somehow hitting every stop and chord change along the way.

Expect to be fully engaged in the show, as their stage presence is nothing short of personal, with the band feeding off the audience almost as much as they do each other. Everything is planned and yet nothing is planned; they don’t play to the audience, they play f or the audience. This year Micah is set to release his debut , Poor Mic’s Toe, which was almost entirely self-recorded and self-produced at a cabin in his home town of Matlock, MB. The album is backed by the Micah Erenberg Band and features a diverse guest list of some of the finest musicians on Manitoba’s scene.

18. odd sundays at Corked Wine Bar: Jane Spavold Tims & Harris Sullivan Oct 16

Last season, after the departure of its governess, Allison Calvern, odd sundays was taken over by a trio of upstarts inexperienced at best in the art of herding cats but determined to further the reputation and success of Fredericton’s long-standing poetry (and other) reading series. Now, the newest season of odd sundays is upon us.

On Sunday, October 16 at 2pm we will gather at Corked Wine Bar, located at 83 Regent Street. The featured readers will be Jane Tims and Harris Sullivan. Come and have a beverage, and support our city’s literary efforts.

Jane Spavold Tims is happy to read from her book within easy reach, poems and drawings about eating local, wild foods, published by Chapel Street Editions in Woodstock. Jane lives in rural New Brunswick and is a botanist who often includes natural themes in her work. Jane is a member of the Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick and a member of local writing groups Fictional Friends and Wolf Tree Writers.

They call Harris Sullivan, “The Bongo Poet”. That’s because he plays bongo drums to spice up his public readings from his two books of poems. A native of Richibucto, he is a retired award-winning journalist who worked 37 years in his profession in Moncton, Toronto, Montreal, and Halifax. Harris has been on the spoken word scene across the Maritimes for nearly five years. His material is all over the map—love poems, sex poems, breakup poems, scathing commentaries on our somewhat broken world, reflections about his parents and a lot of humour. And there’s a touch of music. In addition to the bongos, he sings some of his poems in his readings, certainly making him one of the unique spoken word poets in this region.

Finally, we would like to recognise the following for their on-going support of odd sundays: UNB English, STU English, Westminster Books, Charlotte St. Arts Centre, Fredericton Public Library, and all of our faithful patrons. Back to top.

22. Monday Night Film Series presents A Bigger Splash (Oct 17) & Genius (Oct 24)

October 17, 2016 - 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus A Bigger Splash Luca Guadagnino 125 mins ITALY/FRANCE 2016 English, Italian with English subtitles Cast: Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ralph Fiennes, Dakota Johnson

In A Bigger Splash, the lives of a high profile couple, a famous rock star (Tilda Swinton) and a filmmaker (Matthias Schoenaerts), vacationing and recovering on the idyllic sun-drenched and remote Italian island of Pantelleria, are disrupted by the unexpected visit of an old friend (Ralph Fiennes) and his daughter (Dakota Johnson) - creating a whirlwind of jealousy, passion and, ultimately, danger for everyone involved.

October 24, 2016 - 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus Genius Michael Grandage 104 mins USA 2016 English Cast: Colin Firth, Jude Law, Laura Linney, Nicole Kidman, Guy Pearce

The debut feature from West End theatre ace Michael Grandage, Genius takes a journey back in time to the vital New York literary scene of the Roaring Twenties. Adapted by John Logan from the 1978 book Max Perkins: Editor of Genius by A. Scott Berg, Genius stars Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, The Railway Man) as Perkins, the legendary literary editor who discovered such magnificent talents as Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Genius follows the burgeoning friendship between Perkins and the then unknown Thomas Wolfe (Jude Law, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Anna Karenina). When Wolfe’s sprawling, chaotic manuscript falls into his hands, Perkins is convinced that he has discovered a literary genius, and sets out to hammer it into shape for publication. Under Perkins’ supervision, Wolfe cuts a third of the pages from his manuscript and endows it with a new title: Look Homeward, Angel. The intensive editing process leads to the blossoming of a close relationship between the gentle family man Perkins and the eccentric Wolfe — a relationship that is viewed with suspicion by the men’s romantic partners, Perkins’ wife Louise Saunders (Laura Linney, Mr. Holmes, Hyde Park on Hudson) and Wolfe’s lover, the author Aline Bernstein (Nicole Kidman, Lion, The Railway Man).

The always-reliable Firth gives a restrained and poignant performance as Perkins, while Law delivers a tremendous turn as the increasingly troubled and conflicted Wolfe. Taking us inside the work of writing like few films have ever done, Genius is an extraordinary saga about one of the most important creative collaborations in American literary history.

This year, 30 limited release, independent, foreign, and Canadian films will be shown. Admission is $7/film, but a yearly film society membership reduces admission cost to $4/film. The series is open to all. Memberships are available at Tilley 102 every Monday night. For further info, contact NB Film Co-op at 455-1632 or [email protected], or visit http://www.nbfilmcoop.com/exhibition/monday-night- film-series. 24. The Barr Brothers with Laura Sauvage at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre Oct 18

In partnership with The Capital Complex we are very excited to announce The Barr Brothers with Laura Sauvage on October 18 at the Charlotte St Arts Centre.

Built around the evocative vocals and song writing of Brad Barr and the sturdy and studious drumming of his brother Andrew, Montreal- based Americana/folk-rock quartet the Barr Brothers were formed in 2006 after the dissolution of the siblings' rock trio The Slip. Originally based out of Boston, Massachusetts, the Barrs spent the bulk of the 1990s touring with The Slip up to 2004.

Laura Sauvage is the solo project of Les Hay Babies’ Vivanne Roy. The idea for a solo project came to Vivanne Roy during the last three years on the road with Les Hay Babies. The band was garnering success wherever they went; winning les Francouvertes in Montreal in 2013, getting instant fans in France, Switzerland, Germany and Belgium on three consecutive tours, receiving multiple ECMA nominations and winning the French Songwriter of the Year award at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. The fact that she had no deep roots anywhere, travelling from hotel room to hotel room in often unfamiliar cities, inspired new songs. Thus was born Vivianne's solo project, Laura Sauvage. Her recent release Extraordinormal is available now on iTunes.

Tickets are available online at https://etixnow.com/events/the-barr-brothers/oct-18-2016/charlotte-street-arts-centre (Use Promo CodeBARR2016 at checkout to receive 4 tickets for the price of 3). 27. Truth and Honour Book Launch at the Fredericton Public Library Oct 19

Join author Greg Marquis at the Bibliothèque publique de Fredericton Public Library on Wednesday, October 19 for the Fredericton launch of Truth and Honour: The and the Trial of Dennis Oland. A reception will begin at 7pm. ARTSnews October 13, 2016 10 Volume 17, Issue 40

Truth and Honour explores the 2011 murder of Saint John businessman Richard Oland, of the prominent family that owns , the ensuing police investigation and the arrest, trial, and conviction of the victim’s son Dennis Oland for second-degree murder.

Oland’s trial would be the most publicized in New Brunswick history. What the trial judge called “a family tragedy of Shakespearian proportions,” this real-life murder mystery included adultery, family dysfunction, largely circumstantial evidence, allegations of police incompetence, a high-powered legal defence, and a verdict that shocked the community.

Author Greg Marquis, a professor of Canadian history at the University of New Brunswick Saint John, leads readers through the case, from the discovery of the crime to the conviction and sentencing of the defendant. Offering multiple perspectives, Truth and Honour explores this question: was Dennis Oland responsible for the death of his father?

This event is free and open to the public. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. For more information visit: https://www.facebook.com/events/1680852512234007/. Back to top.
