On being thoughtful about each decision you make Musician and composer Owen Pallett on maintaining a punk ethos in the world of chamber music, their fool-proof lyric writing method, revisiting old work, and negative inspiration. This is your first solo album in six years, but you’ve been busy in that time with different scores and arranging for other musicians. Did these projects take any creative or financial pressure off you when it came to making this record? Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t really. Film scores are always kind of a bit of a crapshoot. If you score a film and it becomes a bit of a hit, then you do get residuals off it, so it is a good investment if you pick the right films. I notoriously have a bit of a bad nose for a good script. Back in 2008 or 2007, Gus Van Sant was asking me to possibly score Milk prior to studio involvement, and I remember reading the script and thinking it was bullshit. It won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and I was like “Oh wow, I don’t really have a good nose for that kind of stuff.” Most of the production work and arrangement work that I do is a little more labor of love. -
Polaris Music Prize 2017 Key Dates Announced
POLARIS MUSIC PRIZE 2017 KEY DATES ANNOUNCED TORONTO, ON – Tuesday, January 31, 2017. The Polaris Music Prize, presented by CBC Music and produced by Blue Ant Media, has revealed its key dates for 2017. The 40 album Long List will be announced June 13 at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Ont. The 10 album Short List will be unveiled on July 13. This year’s Polaris Gala is September 18 at The Carlu in Toronto, Ont. The Polaris Music Prize awards $50,000 to the artist who creates the Canadian Album of the Year, judged solely on artistic merit, without consideration for genre or record sales. Additionally, the nine other nominated acts whose albums make the 2017 Short List will receive $3,000 each courtesy of Slaight Music. Albums eligible for 2017 Polaris Music Prize consideration must be released between June 1, 2016 and May 31, 2017. An independent jury of music journalists, broadcasters and bloggers from across Canada determine the Long List and Short List. Eleven people from the larger jury pool are then chosen to serve on the Grand Jury. This Grand Jury convenes the night of the Gala to select the Polaris Music Prize winner. Past winners have included Kaytranada (2016), Buffy Sainte-Marie (2015), Tanya Tagaq (2014), Godspeed You! Black Emperor (2013), Feist (2012), Arcade Fire (2011), Karkwa (2010), Fucked Up (2009), Caribou (2008), Patrick Watson (2007) and Final Fantasy / Owen Pallett (2006). Haviah Mighty Has Won the 2019 Polaris Music Prize for the Album 13Th Floor
HAVIAH MIGHTY HAS WON THE 2019 POLARIS MUSIC PRIZE FOR THE ALBUM 13TH FLOOR TORONTO, ON – Monday, September 16, 2019 Haviah Mighty has won the 2019 Polaris Music Prize for the album 13th Floor. “For me, the 13th floor is something that we remove from our reality because it is something that we don’t understand and therefore we dismiss it,” said Haviah Mighty. “This is very parallel to so many of the experiences that I speak on, on this album. I’m in a room with so many different people from so many different walks of life who have acknowledged that this is something they feel is important. These people don’t necessarily share the narratives that I ,do or the walks of life that I have, and yet, here we are, finally on what I believe is the 13th floor. This is the moment of resurgence where the dismissal that has existed is now being removed, and the discussion is being had. I’m so grateful that the people around me push me to be brave enough to speak my truth and to have it be acknowledged in this way.” The Prize, which was presented by CBC Music, goes to the best Canadian album of the year based on artistic merit without regard to genre, sales history or label affiliation. It was determined by a Grand Jury of 11 music media professionals drawn from the greater Polaris jury pool of 199 writers, editors, broadcasters, DJs and personalities from across the country. Haviah Mighty’s victory came with a $50,000 monetary reward. -

Its main objective: contributing to the development of local francophone music by offering financial support to projects undertaken by independent record labels and Canadian artists. From production of sound recordings and collective initiatives on international markets, to supporting album marketing, live performances and the promotion of artists from minority francophone communities, Musicaction provides the recording industry community with a wide array of tools designed to stimulate the growth and exposure of original Canadian music. To this end, Musicaction, through contribution agreements with Canadian Heritage, manages the francophone portion of two Canada Music Fund programs, New Musical Works and Collective Initiatives. Contributions from private radio broadcasters reinforce Musicaction’s involvement with the two programs. Since 2002, the foundation has also been managing Fonds RadioStar, which aims at promoting and marketing local francophone music. Fonds RadioStar is 100% funded by private radio broadcasters. -

Inside Out: The Internationalization of the Canadian Independent Recording Sector Richard Sutherland Mount Royal University AbStRAct This article examines the growing internationalization of English Canada’s in - dependent sound recording sector, largely defined by Canadian ownership. Although Canada’s music industry has had considerable links with the global music business for decades, the in - dependent sector remained focused on the production of recordings by Canadian artists for sale in the domestic market. Recently, the links between Canadian music and Canadian- owned record companies have weakened, such that each is less reliant on the other. The article discusses the ways in which this dissociation has occurred within the context of the transformation of the global music industry over the past 15 years and considers the impli - cations for future Canadian music industry policy. L’industrie de la musique canadienne a depuis des décennies noué de nombreux liens avec l’industrie mondiale, mais le secteur indépendant s’est concentré sur la production d’artistes canadiens pour le marché canadien. Récemment, cependant, les liens entre musique canadienne et compagnies de disques appartenant à des Canadiens se sont affaiblis, de manière à ce que l’un dépende moins de l’autre.
