  • Jack Marsh History Lecture 2015
JACK MARSH HISTORY LECTURE 2015 Written and delivered by Gideon Haigh Sydney Cricket Ground Wednesday 21 January 2015 JackHISTORY Marsh LECTURE “When he came he (2 opened the windows of the mind to a new vision of what batting could be” How Victor Trumper Changed Cricket Forever (1) My title, which seems to combine Aldous Huxley’s doors (1) Feline tribute: Gideon with his cat ‘Trumper’ of perception with Dusty Springfield’s windmills of your mind, is actually from a rather less exotic source, Johnnie Moyes. The journalist and broadcaster Moyes may be unique in tightness of affiliation with both Victor Trumper and Donald Bradman: he was an opponent of the former, a biographer of the latter, a friend and idolator of both. He also links the man in whose name tonight’s inaugural lecture has been endowed. Six-year-old Moyes first met Trumper one summer evening in December 1900 when his father, a schoolteacher, invited the visiting New South Wales team to their home in Adelaide. In The Changing Face of Cricket, Moyes recalled that he was at first less taken by Trumper than by his teammate Jack Marsh: “I do not remember now whether I had seen a coloured man, but certainly I hadn’t seen one who was playing first-class (2) Iconic image: the photo that began the Trumper legend cricket, and Marsh fascinated me. What a grand bowler he must have been!” It was only a few weeks later that Trumper and Marsh participated in the Federation Sports Carnival, finishing first and second in the competition for throwing a cricket ball here.

  • As Slow Our Ship
AS SLOW OUR SHIP BOOK 2 I As slow our ship, her foamy track Against the wind was cleaving; Her trembling pennant Still looked back To that dear Isle ’twas leaving Moore. Nell and I and I am sure our cousins too, had no intention of making Queensland the land of our adoption if we ever left Ireland. We would have gone to our aunts in America; Mother had four sisters there. We were used to people coming home on holidays from the USA every summer, some only a few years away. But in those days, a visitor from New Zealand or Australia was very rare. A few years before we left home, an old couple that had been reared in our village, returned from Queensland. They had lived in the Downs for about forty years – Mickie Brown and his wife Mary. Mrs Brown always spoke of Queensland as ‘out there’. Mickie used to say, “I’d go back tomorrow if Mary would come” but Mary did not share Mickies’ love for the open spaces. Mr and Mrs Brown would have known some of the people Bishop Quinn brought to the Downs in the sixties. Then in the spring of 1911, my father’s brother, Michael, returned from Queensland after an absence of thirty-six years. After a term in parliament he was appointed Irish Immigration Agent for Queensland. ‘Sunny Queensland’, ‘The land where Jack is as good as his master’, and ‘The working mans paradise’ – these were some of the slogans displayed on the Queensland government posters throughout the towns and villages.

The story is based on the life of drover, stockman and adventurer Charlie Gaunt, who, as an old man in the 1930s, wrote of his experiences in the Northern Standard Newspaper. Yet, there were many gaps. He rarely men- tioned his feelings or anything of his personal life. In this novel I have attempted to build him into a complete person, with flaws, desires, relationships and regrets.

  • No Offshore End-Run Around Derivatives Reform
No Offshore End-Run Around Derivatives Reform To the Commissioners of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission: We, the undersigned, urge you to stand up for rules that apply the transparency and safety requirements of the Dodd-Frank Act to all derivatives transactions relevant to U.S. markets, regardless of whether these transactions are routed through a foreign subsidiary or entity. We need rules that cover all transactions, wherever they occur, which have the potential to jeopardize America’s financial institutions and financial security. That’s how the rules must to be structured in order to work.. And that’s how Dodd-Frank was written. We call on you to uphold that standard. Exempting the transactions of overseas subsidiaries from the full scope of derivatives regulation would be a giant loophole, encouraging banks to move transactions offshore and permitting an indefinite continuation of the kind of reckless activity that helped crash the economy in 2008. Delay, too, can be a strategy for weakening and evading the law. Four years after the financial crisis and two years after the passage of Dodd Frank, it is time to insist on high standards that apply to all the derivatives transactions of U.S. banks and their subsidiaries.
