Unruh Assembly Fellowship Program Center for California Studies, California State University, Sacramento (Sacramento, CA) Position Fellowship, Full-time, Term Type: Practice Legislation/Lobbying/Government Affairs, Public Policy Area(s): Geographic West (CA, NV, UT, CO, MT, WY) Preference (s): Description: The California State Assembly Fellowship Program, founded in 1957, is one of the nation_s oldest and most prestigious legislative fellowship programs. In 1987, the program was renamed the Jesse Marvin Unruh Assembly Fellowship Program to honor California_s former Assembly Speaker and State Treasurer. This unique program provides an opportunity for individuals of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and experiences to directly participate in the legislative process. Each year, 18 individuals are selected to participate in the program. The 11-month fellowship provides an introduction to public policy formation and adoption in the California Legislature through full-time work as a professional legislative staff member. The Assembly Fellowship Program is co-sponsored by the California State Assembly and California State University, Sacramento, through the Center for California Studies. Assembly Fellows receive a monthly stipend of $1,972, as well as medical, dental and vision benefits. Graduate Students Assembly fellows receive fully-paid enrollment at California State University, Sacramento (Sacramento State), and earn graduate units for seminars taught by faculty from the Sacramento State Government Department. The graduate seminars are a required component of the fellowship program. Office Placement Fellows are placed in the Capitol offices of Assembly Members and perform a variety of tasks in different areas. Some of these tasks may include drafting and staffing legislation, tracking legislation, writing committee analyses, responding to constituent letters, writing speeches, meeting with constituents, or researching policy issues. Qualifications and Application Requirements: *Applicants must be 20 years of age by September 1, 2012. *Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree by September 1, 2012. *There are no preferred majors. Recent fellows have had backgrounds in such diverse fields as child development, religious studies, law and biochemistry. *Individuals with advanced degrees or those in mid-career are encouraged to apply. Selection Process The selection process has two stages. During the first stage, completed applications are screened by the fellowship selection committee. The selection committee includes staff from Sacramento State and the State Assembly. Among the qualities looked for in future fellows are scholastic achievement, oral and written communication skills, analytic skills, campus and community service involvement, political awareness, and leadership potential. Approximately 70 applicants are notified in April of their selection for a personal interview. Interviews take place in late April/early May in Sacramento and Los Angeles. The selection committee selects fellows and alternates after interviews and written notifications are mailed in May. The deliberations of the selection committee are confidential and final. All applications become property of the program. 05 Desired 3L, Alumni Class Level: Posting December 5, 2011 Date: Expiration February 22, 2012 Date: Contact: The Jesse Marvin Unruh Assembly Fellowship Program California State University 6000 J Street Sacramento, California 95819-6081 Resume Other (see below) Receipt: How to Apply online at: Apply: http://www.csus.edu/calst/assembly_fellowship_program.html Additional Cover Letter, Unofficial Transcript, Other Documents Documents: Requested ■Written Statement: Document Submit a personal statement, not to exceed three pages. The written statement is a vital part of your application packet and Notes: provides an opportunity to distinguish yourself from other excellent applicants. Your application will be strengthened with a carefully written and substantive personal statement. A hastily written statement with grammatical and/or typographical errors – or with mistaken references to other fellowship programs for which you are an applicant – will weaken your application. Be sure to proofread your statement for errors. The selection panel is interested in learning about you, including your aspirations and why you are applying to the Senate Fellows program. Use your three pages to demonstrate your writing skills and to provide the selection committee with information that may not otherwise be apparent from your application. Do not simply repeat in narrative form the information that is already included in your application, and do not write a policy paper. Simply utilizing a one- or two-page statement prepared for another application is not the best use of this opportunity, and it will weaken your application. Written statements must be typed and double-spaced with a minimum font size of 12 points and margins of at least one inch. Your name should appear on the top of each page. Do not, however, include your social security number. ■Letters of Recommendations: Three current letters of recommendation are required. At least two of the letters must be from persons who are not presently Members or employees of the California Legislature. It is strongly suggested that at least one of the three recommendations be provided by a faculty member familiar with your work. Applicants who do not submit the required number of letters are ineligible for consideration. Because letters of recommendation are submitted online, you will mhtml:file://G:\Symplicity\2011 Job Postings\Job Postings 12-5-11.mht 12/6/2011 University of California, Davis School of Law: Batch Print Jobs Page 4 of 90 need to supply an email address for each person submitting a recommendation. ■Transcripts: Include official or unofficial transcripts from each college or university attended. All internet-generated transcripts must include the name of the applicant as part of the printed document. In order to ensure confidentiality of your personal information, please redact your social security number from your transcripts prior to submission.
