Sharon Ruth Dagg 22 July 1949 – 27 November 2013

Sharon was a fellow club member who was lost to us suddenly last November. We would like to dedicate this year’s National to her memory. For those of you who didn’t know Sharon I’d like to share a few words about her. Sharon grew up on a farm in the Prairies and was always interested in animals. In the early ’80s she acquired her two Afghans. She did quite well in conformation with her boy. She then added a Springer Spaniel to the family. She tried training her but that girl wasn’t into per- formance. Clyde was her first CC and she found him in Winnipeg thru searching on the internet. She was looking for something to show and trial and while she knew Clyde wasn’t ideal she fell in love with him. She tried doing obedience with him but he didn’t have an aptitude for it. A couple of years later she got Tango. While Sharon was visiting his breeder, Tango climbed up in her lap and won her over. Sharon had a big heart and her dogs all knew it. One demonstration of her big heart was when she saved their Shih Tzu “Shang” from the freeway. One day, driving home from work, Sharon spotted Shang running back and

4 | CHINESE CRESTED SPECIALTY WEEKEND 2014 forth around a major intersection. She stopped her car and managed to convince him to come to her and get in. He was with them for 16 years and ruled the house. In 2008 Romeo came to live with her. He was her first CC conformation champion and she was training him for Rally. May, his new mom, continued with his training and in February, at Sharon’s kennel club surrounded by Sha- ron’s friends, he earned all 3 legs receiving his CRN title. Sharon joined the Regina Kennel Club in 2012 and would take on any job that was there. She helped run the wine and chocolate tables that RKOC offered each year at their annual show and this past year the RKOC honoured her at that show. She ran the canteen for the obedience trial, mak- ing lunches to feed the exhibitors and the judges. She helped out with the ring stew- arding and she had also offered up a prize, from her own pocket, for Chinese Cresteds at their trial in 2011. Joe met her when he first came to Regina in 1987. She was assistant manager at a gas station and she was on the job the day Joe walked in there looking for work. He remembers thinking when he walked out the door that day, “That gal is Hot!” and the rest is history. Joe remembers coming home from work one evening and Sharon was busy in the kitchen. Something sure smelled good. He wondered what they were celebrating and he had high hopes for supper that night only to be disappointed that it was not to be. Sharon had a show coming up and she was cooking bait. Sharon was always willing to participate and pitch in wherever she could. It was hard being the lone Saskatchewan member but she was happy to be a part of our group. We are sorry to have lost a fellow animal lover who adored Cresteds. Sharon will be missed.

OFFICIAL CLASSES (divided by sex) JUNIOR PUPPY – a dog between 6 months and under 9 months on day of show. SENIOR PUPPY – a dog between 9 months and under 12 months on day of show. 12-18 MONTHS – a dog between 12 months and under 18 months on day of show. CANADIAN BRED – a dog born in Canada. Champions of any country are excluded. BRED BY EXHIBITOR – dogs owned and handled in the ring by the breeder. The handler must be the owner/co-owner AND breeder/co-breeder of the dog. The breeder/ owner must handle the dog in this class, but need not handle for further awards. OPEN CLASS – for all dogs (divided into Hairless and Powderpuff). VETERANS CLASS – for all dogs 7 years of age and over as of the date of the show. SPECIALS ONLY – Canadian Champions only. Listed dogs cannot enter this class. EXHIBITION ONLY – dogs entered in this class may not compete in any Regular class but may enter and compete in Non-Regular and/or Unofficial classes. SEXUALLY ALTERED – limited to dogs and bitches over 6 months of age which have been sexually altered.

NON-REGULAR CLASSES BRACE – Two dogs of same breed (not necessarily of the same sex), handled by one person on one lead. Dogs may be spayed or neutered. STUD DOG & GET – Entry comprises the Stud Dog and two of his Get. Stud Dog must be entered in a Regular class or Exhibition Only. Get must be entered in a Regular class. Stud Dog may be neutered. BROOD BITCH & PROGENY – Entry comprises the Brood Bitch and two only of her Progeny. Brood Bitch must be entered in a Regular class or Exhibition Only. Progeny must be entered in a Regular class. Brood Bitch may be spayed. BABY PUPPY CLASS – Dogs 3 months of age and under 6 months of age on the day of the show. There are no points awardeds, nor do they compete for Winners.

SweepstakeS (national only) Sweepstakes – The following classes are offered. Classes are divided by sex: 3-6 months, 6-9 months, 9-12 months, 12-18 months. Dogs entered in Sweepstakes must be entered in one of the official classes. veteran sweepstakes – The following classes are offered, divided by sex: Veteran 7-9 years, Veteran 9+ years. Dogs entered in Veteran Sweepstakes must be entered in one of the official classes or for Exhibition Only and may be spayed or neutered.

2014 CHINESE CRESTED SPECIALTY WEEKEND | 7 Breed Standard for the Chinese Crested ______

General Appearance A small, active and graceful dog; medium to fine boned, smooth hairless body, with hair on feet, head and tail only or covered with a soft veil of hair. Characteristics Two distinct types of this breed; Deer type, racy and fine boned, and Cobby type, heavier in body and bone. Temperament Happy, never vicious. Head Slightly rounded and elongated skull. Cheeks cleanly chiselled, lean and flat, tapering into muzzle. Stop slightly pronounced but not extreme. Head smooth, without excess wrinkles. Distance from base of skull to stop equal to distance from stop to tip of nose. Muzzle tapering slightly but never pointed, lean without flews. Nose a prominent feature, narrow in keeping with muzzle. Any colour nose acceptable. Head presenting graceful appearance, with alert expression. Lips tight and thin; ideally, crest beginning at stop tapering off down neck. Crest itself may flow to any length, a long and flowing crest preferred, but sparse acceptable. Eyes: So dark as to appear black. Little or no white showing. Medium size. Set wide apart. Ears: Set low; highest point of base of ear level with outside corner of eye. Large and erect, with or without fringe, except in Powder Puffs where drop ears are permissible. Mouth: In both varieties: lips are tight with a regular scissor bite, i.e. the upper teeth closely overlapping to the lower teeth and set square to the jaws is preferred, a level bit is acceptable. An undershot bite is considered a fault. In the hairless variety irregular shaped canines, or missing canines, incisors, premolars or molars is to be expected and not to be penalized. In the Powderpuff variety, lack of full dentition is considered a fault. Neck Lean, free from throatiness, long and sloping gracefully into strong shoulders. When moving, carried high and slightly arched. Forequarters Shoulders clean, narrow and well laid back. Legs long and slender, set well under body. Elbows held close to body. Pasterns fine, strong, nearly vertical. Toes turned neither in nor out. Body Medium to long. Supple. Chest rather broad and deep, not barrel ribbed. Breast bone not prominent. Brisket extending to elbows; moderate tuckup.

8 | CHINESE CRESTED SPECIALTY WEEKEND 2014 Hindquarter Rump well-rounded and muscular, loins taut, stifles firm and long, sweeping smoothly into the well let-down hock. Angulation of the rear limb must be such as to produce a level back. Hind-legs set wide apart. Feet Extreme hare foot, narrow and very long, with unique elongation of small bones between joints, especially in forefeet, which almost appear to possess an extra joint. Nails any colour, moderately long. Socks ideally confined to toes, but not extending above top of pastern. Feet turning neither in nor out. Tail Set high, carried up or out when in motion. Long and tapering, fairly straight, not curled or twisted to either side, falling naturally when at rest. Plume long and flowing, confined to lower thirds of tail. Sparse plume acceptable. Gait/Movement Long, flowing and elegant with good reach and plenty of drive. Coat No large patches of hair anywhere on body. Skin fine grained. Smooth warm to the touch. In Powder Puffs coat consists of an undercoat with soft veil of long hair, well coated feature. Colour Any colour or combination of colours. Size Ideal height in Dogs: 28-33 cm (11-13 inches) at withers. Bitches: 23-30 cm (9-12 inches) at withers. Weight varies considerably, but should not be over 5-1/2 kgs (12 lbs). Faults Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seri- ousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree. Note Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

Luc Boileau Luc Boileau, of Burlington, Wisconsin, inherited his in- terest in animals from his father, who kept hunting dogs. When he was old enough to care for them, he was given his own dogs; a Poodle and a Whippet. At 16, he began breeding and showing Whippets and was associated with the breed for many years. For decades, Mr. Boileau was one of the busiest and most successful professional handlers on the circuit. He began his handling career in his native Canada, came to America to manage and show dogs for Ed Jenner at Knolland Farm and, he says, “I’m still here!” The names of the champions he bred and handled while at Knolland would be “too many to list.” His professional handling career culminated at the 1990 Westminster show, when he took Best in Show with Ch. Wendessa Crown Prince. He handled the great Pekingese champion to 86 Group 1sts and 34 Bests in Show. Approved to judge the Toy Group in 1990, Mr. Boileau has added the Hound and Non- Sporting groups, as well as Best in Show. He is a two-time Westminster breed judge and has conducted Pekingese judges’ seminars. Mr. Boileau is president of the Wheaton Kennel Club and is a 30-year member of the Pe- kingese Club of America. He is the recipient of a Quaker Oats Top Toy Dog award. Mr. Boi- leau has taught seminars on Pekingese and hands-on ring observations for new judges. Away from the dog-show ring, he is an accomplished breeder-exhibitor of Hackney ponies and Sicilian donkeys, with many champions to his credit. He enjoys opera and cooking.

Specialty Judge Sari Tietjen Sari Tietjen is a second-generation dog fancier. Her mother, Mary S. Brewster, a retired dog-show judge, founded Robwood Kennels. Her sister, Joy S. Brewster, is an AKC-approved judge. As a young girl, Mrs. Tietjen bred, raised and showed over 14 different breeds representing almost all the groups. However, the breed she is most closely associated with is the Japanese Chin. Mrs. Tietjen has had the breed for over 40 years and, in the ‘50s and ‘60s, estab- lished a line of five-generation group-placing Japanese Spaniels (as the breed was known at that time). Although she no longer actively breeds or shows, she still maintains her line of Japanese Chins, sharing her home with several of these Toy dogs. Mrs. Tietjen is an award-winning author with four books published and a fifth one in pro- gress. She has been a weekly columnist since 1983 with her present column titled “Sari . . . the Way It Is,” appearing in Dog News. She also writes feature articles for various other publications. She won the “Fido” for Dog Writer of the Year and another one for Dog Woman of the Year. She also received an Outstanding Journalist award. Judging since the late ‘60s and currently approved by the American Kennel Club for all Sporting, Hound, Toy and Non-Sporting breeds, Sari Brewster Tietjen has judged most major US shows, as well as shows in Canada and many other foreign countries.

Sweepstakes Judge Darlene Anderson Darlene started in Afghan Hounds in 1969 but became seri- ous about breeding and showing in 1978. She was very successful in Afghans, with 45 champions, many multiple all- breed Best in Show winners, Specialty Best in Show winners and National Specialty winners, #1 Dogs and Top Champion Producing Bitches and a Top Champion Producing Sire. Darlene has also showed Borzoi, Salukis and Italian Grey- hounds; however, the Chinese Crested (CC) won over her heart. She started in CCs in 1998 and currently has the #1 Chinese Crested in the U.S. – a beautiful powderpuff girl named Kulana’s Sh-Boom (aka Holly), who is also a multiple BIS winner. Darlene enjoys judging and has done some prestigious assignments such as the Saluki futurity (U.S.), the Chinese Crested Top 20 (U.S.) and the American Chinese Crested

Rally Judge JOAN REID Joan Reid is a judge for CKC Rally and CARO Rally. She is a member of the Canadian Kennel Club, Canadian Asso- ciation Rally Obedience, Canadian Association of Profes- sional Pet Dog Trainers, and the Oshawa Obedience Club. Joan is a member of the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog program, where she also acts as an evaluator (Adult and Child Testing). Joan has been helping people train their dogs for over 30 years. Many of her students have attained their titles in Rally and have enjoyed the relaxed fun atmosphere of being able to communicate with their dogs while learning new skills. Joan has two dogs. Spencer, a Standard Poodle, has many titles in Obedience and CARO and CKC Rally, and his Canine Good Neighbour and Temparment Test. He is a St. John Am- bulance Therapy Dog and Child Tested. Koko, a Havanese, has just started her career. She has attained her Canine Good Neighbour, CKC Companion Dog and Rally Excellent, CARO Rally Novice and is working on her Open level in obedience. Koko also plays at agility.

Obedience Judge SUSAN DES COTES Susan’s career in dogs began in the early ’70s, while watching a male Sheltie “Rascal” run out on command to herd some 20 or so horses from the back of the property to the barn. Her first Sheltie OTCh. Soulange Dutchess Am. CDX, was a daughter of Rascal, and over the next 16 years the team would learned all about the obedience world. By the early ’80s, Susan and Dutchess were visiting nursing homes spending hours and hours entertaining seniors and listening to stories about the pets they had loved over the years. In the early ’90s, she opened her own dog training school, Surona School of Dog Obedi- ence, where she currently trains out of the Wingrove Veterinary Services facility in Os- pringe, Ontario (between Guelph and Erin). This natural path to excel in dog obedience lead to Susan becoming an obedience judge in 1996. Since then, she has judged from coast to coast in Canada and across the U.S. In 2007, she added Rally to her judge’s re- sume, and became a lifetime member of the Canadian Kennel Club in 2009.

BREEDER OWNER HANDLER COMPETITION ______This unofficial competition is open to all dogs owned and handled by the breeder during regular class judging. The handler must be the owner/co-owner and breeder/co-breeder of the dog. Eligible dogs not directly or indirectly defeated by another eligible dog will compete for this award. The breeder/owner must handle the dog in its regular class, but in the case of having multiple eligible dogs, need not handle the dog for this competition. BOH CHALLENGE TROPHY: Trophy to be retained by CCCO until permanent possession is obtained. For permanent possession, the trophy must be won three times by the same breeder, but not necessarily with the same dog or at consecutive shows.

Beverly Capstick Beverly Capstick has had a long history in dogs. Her introduction to purebred dogs was through a Collie, owned by her uncle, in the ’50s. A few years later she purchased a Boxer and through this breed learned the true meaning of humour and humility. In the early ’60s, while training her Boxer in obedience, she was intro- duced to a Doberman Pinscher and has shared her life with this breed ever since. In 1970, a Manchester Terrier was added to the family. Capstick, a retired art teacher, continued to pursue her hobby of showing dogs. Training in obedience, Schutzhund, agility, and the showing and breeding of Doberman Pinschers, eventually lead her to the venue of judging. Her career has progressed from judging Do- berman Pinschers to the Working, Herding, Hound and Non-Sporting Groups, plus many Toy breeds, Junior Showmanship and BIS. Capstick’s vocation of teaching has crossed over into lecturing around the world on canine structure and its relationship to movement. Capstick now operates an art business, Lutzyn Originals, LLC, depicting dogs in copper. Her artwork is found in 14 foreign countries and throughout the United States.

Section 15.1.1 A dog awarded Winners at a conformation show shall be credited with a number of championship points (ranging from 0 to 5) and the number of championship points credited to a dog awarded Winners shall be provided hereunder. Section 15.1.2 The schedule to be employed in the determination of the number of points awarded Winners shall be as follows: Dogs Competing* 1 2 3-5 6-9 10-12 13 or more Points Allocated 0 1 2 3 4 5 *includes the dog awarded Winners In counting the number of eligible dogs in competition, a dog that is disqualified, dis- missed, excused or ordered from the ring by the judge shall not be included in the calcu lation for championship points. Section 15.1.3 If a Dog awarded Winners was also awarded Best of Breed then all dogs competing in the breed, including Specials Only, shall be included in the calculation for championship points. Section 15.1.4 If a Dog awarded Winners is also awarded Best of Opposite Sex to the Best of Breed, then all dogs of the same sex including those competing for Specials Only shall be included in the total. Section 15.1.5 If a Dog awarded Winners is also awarded Best of Winners, then all dogs defeated directly or indirectly in the breed shall be included in the total. Section 15.1.6 If a dog is awarded Winners only, then all the dogs of the same sex in the class competition shall be included in the total. Section 15.1.7 The number of championship points to be credited to a dog awarded Win ners shall be determined by the highest award earned and calculated as per this section. Clarification: Example of directly or indirectly defeating: If the Winners Bitch is awarded BOS but not Best of Winners, the Best of Winners Male shall be deemed to have indirectly defeated the Specials Bitches, and is thus entitled to add them to the number of dogs and bitches defeated. Section 15.1.9 A dog may not be credited with more than 5 championship points a single show. Section 15.1.12 In order for a dog to be recognized as a champion and its owner provided with a Championship certificate, the dog must: (a) earn at least 10 championship points under at least 3 judges; and, (b) be individually registered in the records of the CKC or have an ERN; and (c) have earned at least one 2-point win either at the breed or group level. Note: Missing ‘Sections’ are applicable to all-breed-show requirements.
