INTRODUCTION Photographs of Columbia, primarily 1927-1941 and including the , fraternity and sorority houses, Broadway and downtown, Stephens College, homes, and aerial views. Additional images of Boone County, , the Ozarks, and Cooper, Iron and Jackson County buildings, people and miscellaneous places. Many of the photographs in this collection are by Leon Waughtel.

DONOR INFORMATION The collection was donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Roy T. King in multiple accessions from 1978-1988.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Roy T. King was born on December 26, 1904 in Sturgeon, Missouri. He began working as a newspaper librarian at the State Historical Society of Missouri in 1922 while a student at the University of Missouri. He graduated in 1927 with a degree in American history. From 1943 until his retirement in 1974, King headed the repository of clippings, photographs and other reference materials at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. King was a pioneer in microfilming newspapers, a practice he began at the State Historical Society. He chaired the newspaper division of the national Special Libraries Association and received an award for his service to the division in 1980. King was the author of The Territorial Press in Missouri (1954), coauthor of The History of Aviation in St. Louis (1980), and wrote articles for the Missouri Historical Review and Missouri newspapers. He was a member of Sigma Phi Sigma, the St. Louis Genealogical Society, and the William Clark Society, a St. Louis antiquarian group that he served as secretary. In retirement he taught creative writing classes to senior citizens in Kirkwood. King died on May 19, 1990, in Kirkwood, Missouri. His family included wife Kathleen Fowler King and children Thomas Roy and Margaret.
