The completion of this thesis has enabled me to put to use the knowledge acquired during my employment with the Halal Development Corporation and exposure to the Halal industry. The idea for this thesis emerged when I, together with senior government officials from the Ministry of Trade and Industry, participated in the 10th World Islamic Economic Forum in Dubai, 2014. Through discussions with a number of officials from key Islamic countries, I started to realise the varying understandings and approaches undertaken by those countries concerning Halal regulation and commercialisation. Despite subscribing to a similar religious faith, Muslim consumers in many ways are nebulous. However, the encouragement to delve into the topic came at the height of a series of my business trips to various regions in China as part of the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative between China and Malaysia during 2014 and 2016. This experience provoked me to pursue and write about the politics of Halal. During this pursuit, I began to see the striking paradox between the need to promote Muslim trade and consumption among predominantly Islamic countries and also to address the states' concern about the spread of Islamic customs within the social and political sphere of the communist party. I approached the University of Tasmania and others with my expression of interest in conducting research on Halal. Among the earliest replies was that from Associate Professor Dr Nicki Tarulevicz, who has since been supporting my research and placing her trust in me to complete this thesis. A special thanks to co-supervisor Professor James Chin for his guidance and intellectual discourse that has enabled me to explore the topic and transition it into academic perspective. Also, thanks to my wife Fazlinda Kassim for her unceasing support and encouragement and to my three children for constantly reminding me of the thesis deadline. The constitution gives the federal and state governments the power to "control or restrict the propagation of any religious doctrine or belief among persons professing the religion of Islam." The constitution also defines ethnic Malays as Muslim. Civil courts generally ceded authority to Sharia (Islamic law) courts on cases concerning conversion from Islam, and Sharia courts remained reluctant to allow for such conversions. There was no change in the status of respect for religious freedom by the government during the reporting period. Muslims generally may not legally convert to another religion, although members of other religions may convert to Islam. Officials at the federal and state government levels oversee Islamic religious activities, and sometimes influence the content of sermons, use mosques to convey political messages, and prevent certain imams from speaking at mosques. The government maintains a dual legal system, whereby Sharia courts rule on religious and family issues involving Muslims and secular courts rule on other issues pertaining to both Muslims and the broader population. Government policies promoted Islam above other religions. Minority religious groups remained generally free to practice their beliefs; however, over the past several years, many have expressed concern that the civil court system has gradually ceded jurisdictional control to Sharia courts, particularly in areas of family law involving disputes between Muslims and non-Muslims.

    LIMA19 : 40 sophisticated ships anchor in Langkawi waters BERNAMA 27/03/2019 LANGKAWI, March 27 (Bernama) -- A parade of 40 local and international ships anchoring off Langkawi in conjunction with the 2019 Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA ‘19) was very hypnotising and attracted the attention of the government administration’s delegation headed by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Dr Mahathir and his delegation were taken aboard KD Perantau belonging to the Royal Malaysian Navy for an hour-and-a-half and received the salutes from the crew of all the ships at Resorts World Langkawi here at the exhibition which was entering its second day today. Among the federal and state government delegates were the Minister of Defence Mohamad Sabu, Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman and Menteri Besar of Kedah Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir. They were all given the honour of seeing for themselves the greatness and sophistication of the ships, namely, 17 Royal Malaysian Navy ships, five Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) ships, MV Polaris from the Marine Department Malaysia, RV Discovery from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu and 16 ships from 12 countries involved in the event. The 15th edition saw LIMA hosting commercial delegates from 32 countries and 406 defence and commercial companies with 200 international businesses. All their products and services would be exhibited during the five-day event, until March 30 at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) and Resort World Langkawi (RWL).
