California-Bred Flashback: Naevus Star

On April 21, 1991, Naevus Star, a son of Naevus, won the $50,000 To Be or Not Handicap at Santa Anita Park, with Sunny Blossom second and Doyouseewhatisee fin- ishing third in a field of four. Naevus Star was trained by Doug Peterson and ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye. He ran the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:02 1/5 and won by a head at odds of 2-1. Naevus Star was the first of 11 foals out of the El Pitirre mare Spanish Speed, who also produced stakes winner Mob Ties and the stakes-placed Spanish Vixen. The To Be or Not was Naevus Star’s fourth win in 19 starts. He also won the DiMaggio Stakes, placed in two other stakes and finished his career with five wins in 37 starts and earnings of $221,521. Naevus Star was bred by Millard and Justin Archuleta, was foaled at Lakeview Thoroughbred Farm in Lakeview and was owned by Christopher Archuleta. As a stallion, Naevus Star has 15 crops to race with progeny earnings of nearly $1 million.
