PARKS AND RECREATION Parks and Recreation Overview of Facilities and Programs The Department of Parks and Recreation manages 400 parks and open areas in its approximately 6,200 acres of property throughout the City, works with the public to be good stewards of the park system, and provides safe and welcoming opportunities for the public to play, learn, contemplate, and build community. The park system comprises about 10% of the City’s land area; it includes 485 buildings, 224 parks, 185 athletic fields, 122 children's play areas, 24 community centers, 151 outdoor tennis courts, 22 miles of boulevards, an indoor tennis center, two outdoor and eight indoor swimming pools, four golf courses, studios, boat ramps, moorage, fishing piers, trails, camps, viewpoints and open spaces, a rock climbing site, a conservatory, a classical Japanese garden, and a waterfront aquarium. The development of this system is guided by the Seattle Parks & Recreation Plan 2000, the 38 neighborhood plans, the Joint Athletic Facilities Development Program with the Seattle School District, the 1999 Seattle Center and Community Centers Levy, the 2000 Parks Levy, and DPR’s annual update to the Major Maintenance Plan. 2000 Parks Levy In November 2000, Seattle voters approved a $198.2 million levy lid lift for Parks and Recreation. The levy closely follows the plan forged by the Pro Parks 2000 Citizens Planning Committee. The levy is designed to fund more than 100 projects to improve maintenance and enhance programming of existing parks, including the Woodland Park Zoo; acquire, develop and maintain new neighborhood parks, green spaces, playfields, trails and boulevards; and add out-of-school and senior activities. -

Square Feet 2013 Wrap-up Report Square Feet 2013 : a wrap-up report Published by the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture in January 2014 Edited by Matthew Richter Event Photographs by Jenny Crooks Introduction Square Feet 2013 convened on Monday, November 18, 2013 to explore the idea of Cultural Districts as a way to support the work of artists and arts and cultural organizations in Seattle. The event was produced by the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture and 4Culture. Centered on a keynote address from creative placemaking expert Anne Gadwa Nicodemus, the day also featured presentations from twenty local projects in motion, and a working session that resulted in a $10,000 investment by the Office of Arts & Culture in an idea generated by the day’s attendees. Over 150 people, representing arts organizations, independent artists, funders, developers, property owners, architectural designers and consultants, universities, and local government took part in the day, which was hosted by the Lee Center for the Arts, the Northwest Film Forum, and the Velocity Dance Center, all on 12th Avenue on Capitol Hill. A note about the text of this report: We solicited the presenters’ remarks following the event for inclusion in this report. Some of the speakers had prepared remarks, some spoke from general notes, and some spoke extemporaneously. We have attempted to present all of these in a format that makes sense to the reader. RECOMMENDATION The non-forested units in Carkeek Park include unique wetland and riparian habitat, valuable to salmon and other wildlife. A management plan to address those units would make an excellent companion to this document. Contact: Hillary Ryan, 253.272.4258 ext 3051 [email protected] Tacoma Art Museum presents New Exhibition Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Their Circle: French Impressionism and the Northwest IMAGES AVAILABLE August 2, 2019 (Tacoma, WA)— Opening on September 28, Tacoma Art Museum will present Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Their Circle: French Impressionism and the Northwest, a new exhibition that examines how the work of French Impressionists and their immediate precursors made their way into Northwest public and private collections. It also will include selected paintings by American and Northwest artists to illustrate the spread of Impressionism across the country. “The purpose of this exhibition is deeply connected to the same passion that drove the French Impressionists, to transform the way we see,” said David F. Setford, TAM’s Executive Director and curator of this exhibition. “It does this in two ways. First, it puts rarely seen works from TAM’s European art collection into context and allows for an expanded visitor learning opportunity. In addition, it is also the first time that these Impressionist works from museums and private collections in the Northwest have been seen together. It will provide a lasting resource about French Impressionism and its historical impact for curators and collectors in our region and beyond.” Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Their Circle: French Impressionism and the Northwest was organized and curated by the Tacoma Art Museum, and includes approximately fifty (50) works of art. The exhibition is accompanied by a small publication including essays by Setford and TAM curator Margaret Bullock, as well as an online listing of French Impressionist works currently in Northwest public collections.
