What started as a small, online venture for the ‘season’ over a decade ago has grown into a full-fledged web site which is active round the year. Kutcheribuzz.com is this site. Publisher’s NOTE Kutcheri Calendar Kutcheri Calendar This book should help you work your way through the ‘season’. It lists the leading concerts at all the key sabhas in Chennai. (One or two sabha listings may not find a place here because their managers did not respond quickly to requests for info). We have even provided details of the accompanists where space permitted. Another section lists prominent artistes, the famous and the young and talented and lists all their concerts. Space has limited our coverage though. We have omitted the leading lights of Carnatic music because everybody knows who they are and where they perform. A Guide Book like this one cannot be comprehensive and we hope the effort is taken in the right spirit too. Soak in the ‘season’. Enjoy the music. We also bring out a Dance Guide for the season All these details are also posted on www.kutcheribuzz.com. The web site covers the ‘season’ on a daily basis - with reports, photos and videos. Write to us at [email protected] Do make www.kutcheribuzz.com your favourite web site. Bookmark it. Join us on FaceBook too. • Music/Singers
DESIZN CIRCLE , DELHI I NOIDA WWW.DESIZNCIRCLE.COM Music/Singers There are two major styles of classical music unique to India- 1. The Hindustani style popular in North India and 2. The Carnatic style popular in South India. BhaKti/devotion to God is the main purpose of classical music and hence the theme and content of the songs sung/played are heavily religious or spiritual. The songs/kritis/kirtans are set to melodious tunes called ‘ragas’ and time beats/rhythms called taal/taalas’. • Great poets and holy men liKe Tulsidas, Surdas, Meera Bhai, Namdev, Ek Nath, Kabir have contributed the lyrics of the songs in the Hindustani style. • Thyagaraja, Muthuswamy Dikshitar, and Shyma Sastrigal are considered the big three among composers (lyrics and music) in the carnatic style. • Some of the other composers are Purandara dasa, Annamacharya, Narayana Tirthar and Swati Thirunal. • In the Hindustani style, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Pt. Jasraj, Rajan Mishra and Sajan Mishra, Kishori Amolkar, Prabha Apte, Girija devi, Parveen Sultana, Shubha Mudgal are some of the vocalists famous for their vocal recitals both within our country and abroad. • In the Carnatic Style, Dr. Bal Murali Krishna Madurai Shesha Gopalan are two of the many veterans who inspire the youth to learn classical music and Keep the tradition alive. • Late M. S Subbulakshmi’s voice had the power to mesmerize any number of listeners during her recitals. • Vocalists who are now popular are Sudha Raghunathan, Aruna Sairam, Sowmya, Nithyasree Mahadevan, Unnikrishnan, T.N. Krishna. Hyderabad bothers, Sanjay Subramanian, Neyveli Santanam Hyderabad bothers, Jesudas. • Here is a list of exponents of some of the Indian musical instruments.

  • The Machineries of Symbolic Power in Carnatic Music and Its Festivals
CASTE, CLASS AND THE CLASSICAL: THE MACHINERIES OF SYMBOLIC POWER IN CARNATIC MUSIC AND ITS FESTIVALS By Shreya Ramnath Submitted to Central European University Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisors: Alexandra Kowalski Daniel Monterescu Budapest, Hungary 2017 CEU eTD Collection ABSTRACT The tradition of Carnatic classical music has long been imbued with the politics of power, caste and class. Thought of as the preserve of the upper caste Brahmins, Carnatic music is often criticized as exclusive and exclusionary, with no lower caste presence in the production or consumption of music in its signature 100-year-old Margazhi festival conducted annually in the South-Indian city of Chennai. In today’s age, in which ideologies of meritocracy and egalitarianism are becoming widespread among the rising middle classes, the Carnatic field provides an ideal site to study the conflict between the aspirations to modernity and equality and the structural, restrictive forces of caste. Using Bourdieu’s concepts of taste, distinction, cultural capital and symbolic power, this thesis aims to study the symbolic creation of power in the realm of the arts, the institutionalized exclusion it fosters and its use by the Brahmins as a cultural tool of distinction. To do so, the thesis does the following: first, it provides a historicized understanding of the invention of the tradition – and its appropriation by upper caste elites – in a freshly post- colonial climate in which a uniquely Indian identity had to be forged. Second, it employs the case of the three-year-young, still uninvestigated “alternative” Urur Olcott festival, which seeks to democratize the arts by showcasing the classical and the folk, the ‘highbrow’ and the art forms of marginalized communities on the same platform – in a fishing village in the city of Chennai, far from the hallowed urban concert stages.
