Manifesting the Soul in Andrew Marvell’s ‘On a Drop of Dew’ Ben Faber Redeemer University College [email protected] 1. Paradoxical Marvell ‘The ideal simplicity, approached by resolving contradictions’ is the epigraph to the chapter on Andrew Marvell’s ‘The Garden’ in William Empson’s Some Versions of Pastoral.1 With Marvell, however, the phrase ‘ideal simplicity’ itself requires resolving: Marvell is anything but simple, and his versions of pastoral consistently complicate the relationship between the ideal and the real. The material world in ‘The Garden’, for instance, may be annihilated in an ideal ‘green thought in a green shade’ (48) but even that happy, pure, and sweet place in the mind is ‘beyond a mortal’s share’ (57, 61).2 A painfully English experience of the fall—the ‘luckless apple’ of the Civil Wars—turns the Edenic environment of Nun Appleton into militias, forts, and garrisons, with Switzers, artillery, engines, and pillaging (‘Upon Appleton House’, 327). It will argue that Milton’s nationalism is difficult to trace chronologically, but that education is always essential to Milton’s national vision of England. -

The Dutch Golden Age: a new aurea ætas? The revival of a myth in the seventeenth-century Republic Geneva, 31 May – 2 June 2018 « ’T was in dien tyd de Gulde Eeuw voor de Konst, en de goude appelen (nu door akelige wegen en zweet naauw te vinden) dropen den Konstenaars van zelf in den mond » (‘This time was the Golden Age for Art, and the golden apples (now hardly to be found if by difficult roads and sweat) fell spontaneously in the mouths of Artists.’) Arnold Houbraken, De groote schouburgh der nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen, 1718-1721, vol. II, p. 237.1 In 1719, the painter Arnold Houbraken voiced his regret about the end of the prosperity that had reigned in the Dutch Republic around the middle of the seventeenth century. He indicates this period as especially favorable to artists and speaks of a ‘golden age for art’ (Gulde Eeuw voor de Konst). But what exactly was Houbraken talking about? The word eeuw is ambiguous: it could refer to the length of a century as well as to an undetermined period, relatively long and historically undefined. In fact, since the sixteenth century, the expression gulde(n) eeuw or goude(n) eeuw referred to two separate realities as they can be distinguished today:2 the ‘golden century’, that is to say a period that is part of history; and the ‘golden age’, a mythical epoch under the reign of Saturn, during which men and women lived like gods, were loved by them, and enjoyed peace and happiness and harmony with nature. -

Review1 Maria-Theresia Leuker, University of Cologne Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679). Dutch Playwright in the Golden Age, ed. by J. Bloemendal and F.-W. Korsten (Leiden: Brill, 2011). Keywords: Joost van den Vondel, Vondel Research, Seventeenth-Century Drama and Theatre, Early Modern Dutch Studies, Literary Theory, Literary Analysis, Performativity, Theatricality Befitting its rank, the new series ‘Drama and Theatre in Early Modern Europe’ enters the academic stage with a volume that is dedicated to the Dutch national poet and playwright Joost van den Vondel and his works. Editors are neo-Latinist Jan Bloemendal, who also acts as editor for the whole series, and philologist Frans-Willem Korsten. By relating Vondel to Shakespeare and Rembrandt from the outset in their introduction, they immediately signal to those readers not familiar with Vondel, that as a poet he belongs to the cultural premier league. Traditionally, Dutch literature of the Golden Age takes second place to the world famous Dutch paintings of that period. Riet Schenkeveld-van der Dussen’s 1991 overview on ‘Dutch Literature in the Age of Rembrandt’ had already attempted to draw the international readers’ attention to Dutch seventeenth century literature by recalling the famous painter. The editors of this new volume are well aware that there is still an important task at hand, and with this collection of essays they plan ‘to increase the knowledge of Vondel’s work internationally’.2 The essays seek to enable scholars, students and the public at large alike to benefit from studying Vondel’s plays individually. The volume is not only meant to present the results of current research and to function as a body of reference, it also aims at giving new impulses to literary analysis of Vondel’s plays in national and international settings. -

This dissertation argues that this massacre remains such an unique event in Dutch history, that it needs thorough investigation. Historians have focused on short-term political causes for the eruption of violence on the brothers’ fatal day. This work contributes to the existing historiography by uncovering more long-term political and social undercurrents in Dutch society. In doing so, issues that may have been overlooked previously are taken into consideration as well. -
The Literary Underground in the 1660S: Andrew Marvell, George Wither, Ralph Wallis, and the World of Restoration Satire and Pamphleteering

HarDback, $110 (£60). Stephen BarDle’s compact book on the Restoration’s “literary underground” follows in the footsteps of RicharD Greaves, Neil Keeble, David Norbrook, Sharon Achinstein, Harold Love, Martin Dzelzainis, Nigel Smith, anD Nicholas von Maltzahn, among others. While Demonstrating the enDuring value of Jurgen Habermas’s concept of the public sphere for literary anD cultural analysis, it heeds the call of Habermas’s critics for recognizing the crucial role playeD by religion in the Restoration’s intermittently expanDing public sphere. Although the government trieD to use censorship to make the public sphere contract, the literary unDergrounD, consisting of writers like Wither, Wallis, anD eventually Marvell, as well as networks of “entrepreneurial,” “risk-frienDly” printers and publishers, was collectively “a thorn in the government’s siDe” anD helped expanD the public sphere, especially at times when Parliament was in session. It expanDeD enough to incluDe micro-public spheres in towns like Wallis’s Gloucester as well as in the prisons where he, Wither, Bunyan, anD many other Dissenters were confineD for extenDeD perioDs. Collectively, Bardle’s three authors contributeD to the survival of the public sphere by writing both for it anD in a sense about it. After emphasizing the comparative fragility of the RestoreD regime, which faileD to stamp out the revolutionary iDeas of the 1640s anD 50s, only senDing them unDergrounD, BarDle’s IntroDuction uses Steve Pincus anD Peter Lake’s religion-frienDly account of the public sphere to mount an argument that Wither, Wallis, anD Marvell interveneD in the public sphere in the 1660s via manuscript anD print in orDer to aDvocate religious toleration. -

MILLER Under the Direction of Nicholas Wilding, PhD ABSTRACT Discovered in 1933 after having been hidden from the academic world for 271 years, the Hartlib Papers have been called the greatest 17 th century research revelation of the 20 th century. Yet 81 years later the author and collector of the papers remains a mystery and the content of the papers have been little appreciated. Who was this auctor prudens and what do his voluminous papers have to say about his time? This thesis argues that Hartlib is a critical link in a long chain of scholars who formed and shaped the development of science. An evolution which began with Roger Bacon, more fully developed into a new epistemology with Francis Bacon, is passed on by Hartlib to others who were founding members of the Royal Society. -

C.M. Lesger Januari 2012 De prent in de linker bovenzijde is afkomstig uit het tweede deeltje van de katholieke geschiedenismethode voor het lager onderwijs Rood, wit en blauw uit 1956. Het onderschrift luidt: „In 1619 werd Jacatra verbrand. Op de puinhopen stichtte Jan Pietersz. Coen Batavia. Een inlander houdt een pajong boven het hoofd van Coen. Een landmeter laat Coen een kaart zien, waarop hij het plan van de nieuwe stad heeft getekend.‟ (Met dank aan Lucia Hogervorst) De prent in de rechter onderzijde is afkomstig uit de historische stripserie Van nul tot nu uit 1985. De tekst in het ingevoegde gele kader luidt: „Een van de bekendste gouverneurs-generaal was Jan Pieterszoon Coen. Hij verdreef de Engelsen van het eiland Java en stichtte er de stad Batavia. Batavia heet nu Djakarta en is de hoofdstad van Indonesië. Batavia werd al gauw het middelpunt van alle Nederlandse koloniën in het Oosten‟. De tekst in het grootste kader luidt: „De bezetting van Oost-Indie lukte beter. Men benoemde een gouverneur-generaal in Indië die de opdracht had de boel daar goed te besturen en alle zaken “eerlijk” te regelen… Dat daar wel enige dwang aan te pas kwam, vond iedereen toen normaal: blanken stonden immers boven gekleurde mensen?‟ Op het plaatje is Jan Pieterszoon Coen te herkennen. Hij zegt tegen een aantal Indiërs: “Wij hebben specerijen nodig en geen rijst! Neemt allen dus een schop en spit uw dessa om!.
