First question. Development of More Tourist Attractions 1. DR CHIANG LAI-WAN (in Cantonese): It is learnt that one of the reasons why many Hong Kong people like travelling abroad during holidays is that there are quite a number of tourist attractions overseas. On the other hand, some members of the tourism industry have relayed to me that Hong Kong's tourism industry has entered a harsh winter and is now facing acute competition from such places as Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, etc. As such, Hong Kong should develop more tourist attractions to, on the one hand, provide Hong Kong people with more leisure places to spend their holidays, thereby encouraging them to stay and spend in Hong Kong and, on the other, to attract more tourists to visit Hong Kong. In this connection, will the Government inform this Council: (1) as the "LED Rose Garden Display" at Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul, Korea has been very well-received and the "Light Rose Garden ― Hong Kong" held locally in February this year also attracted tens of thousands of people viewing the exhibition, whether the authorities will consider collaborating with local artists or arts organizations to produce LED lighting or art installations in other media forms and display them permanently at locations such as the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, the West Kowloon Cultural District, etc., which will not only provide more room for the development of local creative arts but also attract tourists to visit Hong Kong; if they will, of the details; if not, the reasons for that; (2) as quite a number of overseas cities have used murals to beautify their cityscapes in recent years (e.g. the artistic murals in Penang, Malaysia, the Ihwa-dong Mural Village in Seoul, Korea and the Rainbow Military Dependents' Village in Taiwan), which are well-received by tourists, whether the authorities will consider transforming local street murals and mural villages currently found in districts such as Stanley, Sheung Wan, Sham Shui Po, Kwun Tong, 11700 LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL ─ 15 June 2016 Ping Che, etc. into new attractions, with a view to developing mural art, adding charm to old districts and promoting local culture; if they will, of the details; if not, the reasons for that; and (3) as "flower viewing" and "flower photo-taking" have become popular in Hong Kong in recent years, with quite a number of members of the public visiting various places in the territory to appreciate and take pictures of flowers (e.g. the Bougainvillea Alley at Un Chau Estate, Cheung Sha Wan as well as the tabebuia chrysantha in Sha Tin Park and Nam Cheong Park) during the blooming season, whether the authorities have plans to plant various types of special flowers, complemented by designs of flower or tree galleries, in various parks and on roadsides for appreciation by the general public and tourists; if they do, of the details; if not, the reasons for that? SECRETARY FOR COMMERCE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT (in Cantonese): President, tourism is a pillar industry of Hong Kong. The Government attaches great importance to the tourism industry in Hong Kong and has devoted substantial resources to support its development. Starting from last year, the tourism industry in Hong Kong has been facing fierce competition due to the slowdown of global economy as well as depreciated currencies and relaxed visa requirements for Mainland visitors in neighbouring countries. In view of the competition and challenges faced by the tourism industry, the Government allocated in the last year an additional funding of $80 million to the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) for stepping up overseas promotion efforts. Subsequently, another $10 million was allocated for setting up a one-off matching fund to encourage local tourist attractions for launching distinctive tourism products in collaboration with hotels, travel agencies, retail merchants, and so on.

    PERFORMING ‘CHINESE-NESS’: ARTICULATING IDENTITIES-OF- BECOMING IN THE WORKS OF FOUR SINOPHONE THEATRE DIRECTOR-PLAYWRIGHTS IN THE 1980s A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Wah Guan Lim August 2015 © 2015 Wah Guan Lim ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Performing ‘Chinese-ness’: Articulating Identities-of-Becoming in the Works of Four Sinophone Theatre Director-Playwrights in the 1980s Wah Guan Lim, Ph.D. Cornell University, 2015 This dissertation is the first full-length comparative study of contemporary drama that attempts to reflect the diversity of the Chinese-speaking world. By presenting a circuit of Sinophone creativity that differs substantially from that assumed by conventional literary history, which focuses on the People’s Republic of China, I investigate the formation of identity in the 1980s through the works of four important diasporic theatre director-playwrights — Gao Xingjian (China), Stan Lai (Taiwan), Danny Yung (Hong Kong) and Kuo Pao Kun (Singapore). I focus on the problem of “Chinese-ness,” arguing that the foregoing dramatists share an interest in problematizing essentialist notions of Chinese identity. In the aftermath of the Cold War, the Iron Curtain not only divided the “two Chinas” across the Taiwan Straits, but also impacted the two former British colonies. Two imagined scenarios emerged — a re-sinification and eventual handover to China, and a clamp down on Chinese education due to the Red Scare — that forced the ethnic Chinese majorities of each state to respond to the accelerating emergence of China on the world economic and political scene on the i one hand, and simultaneously grapple with the ever-changing internal paradigm of the differing circumstances among each of the four sites on the other.

    Chapter 3. Walking contradictions: spatial practices in Tsing Yi, Hong Kong. The map is not the territory. Let’s go and have a look at the ground.1 3a. Chapter introduction In chapter 2 I surveyed the built and lived space of Hong Kong from the somewhat distanced viewpoint of an historical analysis. This material provided some spatial underpinnings to Hong Kong’s colonial development as a major trading port (and later ‘world city’). Although I focused on the integral part that ordinary practices of city dwellers have played in shaping the spatiality of Hong Kong, this history cannot provide a direct link to the spatial practices of contemporary Hong Kong dwellers. In this chapter I concentrate more directly on the nature of lived spatiality in Hong Kong and how it is practically negotiated on an everyday basis. I begin by considering practices of walking in the city. In examining pedestrian practices I zoom in on a small strip of practised space in a residential area in Tsing Yi, in the New Territories. A short walk between two housing estates provided a description of different aspects of everyday spatiality. Observations of this routine walk allow me to isolate specific pedestrian practices and routines as they are utilized in everyday strategies. The built environment of housing estates provided a site for complex spatial practices that belie descriptions of housing estates as placeless or anonymous. The verticality, three-dimensionality and interpenetrating of different uses of space conditions the way that dwellers move around and navigate these built environments. I also investigate the multiplicity of small practices and uses of space, which occur in spaces in between the planned spaces of estates.

    Tradition in Motion The Status and Identity of Amateur Beiguan Opera and Music Communities [Zidi] in Modern Taiwanese Society Shih, Ying-Pin Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music December 2016 ii Tradition in Motion © 2016 Shih, Yingpin All Rights Reserved Abstract iii Abstract Traditional beiguan opera (and its music) has been performed for over three hundred years in Taiwanese society. It is still performed to this day. During this time, the music’s character and its eco-system have been in constant change, due to its multi-cultural and hybrid nature. Its development has also been influenced over time by environmental effects. The identities of beiguan communities have altered under the influences of shifting social and governmental pressures. Several questions are apparent: how can traditional modes of performance sustain their original values and identities while society moves into modernity? How can the beiguan subculture remain relevant, by finding new niches within the shifting cultural landscape? This thesis examines the formation of beiguan culture long before 1960 and compares it with beiguan’s contemporary situation in order to investigate changes in performance and community identities. Comparison will be presented in the form of fieldwork and theoretical analyses. We will focus on several beiguan communities selected from folk groups (both professional troupes and amateur clubs) and their related government organisations (such as the education system), in order to trace the trajectories of phenomena connected with these changes. Possibilities for culture conservation in the future will also be suggested. The approach outlined in this thesis may be used to survey the development of traditional beiguan music.
