SPIRITS AND IDENTITY IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY NORTHEASTERN JAPAN: HIRATA KOKUGAKU AND THE TSUGARU DISCIPLES by Gideon Fujiwara A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Asian Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2013 © Gideon Fujiwara, 2013 ABSTRACT While previous research on kokugaku , or nativism, has explained how intellectuals imagined the singular community of Japan, this study sheds light on how posthumous disciples of Hirata Atsutane based in Tsugaru juxtaposed two “countries”—their native Tsugaru and Imperial Japan—as they transitioned from early modern to modern society in the nineteenth century. This new perspective recognizes the multiplicity of community in “Japan,” which encompasses the domain, multiple levels of statehood, and “nation,” as uncovered in recent scholarship. My analysis accentuates the shared concerns of Atsutane and the Tsugaru nativists toward spirits and the spiritual realm, ethnographic studies of commoners, identification with the north, and religious thought and worship. I chronicle the formation of this scholarly community through their correspondence with the head academy in Edo (later Tokyo), and identify their autonomous character. Hirao Rosen conducted ethnography of Tsugaru and the “world” through visiting the northern island of Ezo in 1855, and observing Americans, Europeans, and Qing Chinese stationed there. I show how Rosen engaged in self-orientation and utilized Hirata nativist theory to locate Tsugaru within the spiritual landscape of Imperial Japan. Through poetry and prose, leader Tsuruya Ariyo identified Mount Iwaki as a sacred pillar of Tsugaru, and insisted one could experience “enjoyment” from this life and beyond death in the realm of spirits. -

140 The Buddha of Kamakura The Buddha of Kamakura and the “Modernization” of Buddhist Statuary in the Meiji Period Hiroyuki Suzuki, Tokyo Gakugei University Introduction During Japan’s revolutionary years in the latter half of the nineteenth century, in particular after the Meiji Restoration of 1868, people experienced a great change in the traditional values that had governed various aspects of their life during the Edo period (1603-1867). In their religious life, Buddhism lost its authority along with its economic basis because the Meiji government, propagating Shintoism, repeatedly ordered the proclamation of the separation of Shintoism and Buddhism after the Restoration. The proclamation brought about the anti-Buddhist movement haibutsu kishaku and the nationwide movement doomed Buddhist statuary to a fate it had never before met.1 However, a number of statues were fortunately rescued from destruction and became recognized as sculptural works of Buddhist art in the late 1880s. This paper examines the change of viewpoints that occurred in the 1870s whereby the Buddha of Kamakura, a famous colossus of seated Amida (Amitâbha) from the mid-thirteenth century, was evaluated afresh by Western viewers; it also tries to detect the thresholds that marked the path toward a general acceptance of the idea that Buddhist statuary formed a genre of sculptural works in the fine arts during the Meiji period (1868-1912). Title: Visualizing the classics : reading surimono and ky ka books as social and cultural history Issue Date: 2017-10-10 ō Chapter 5: Visualizing the classics: Intellectual networks and cultural nostalgia 5.1 Introduction This chapter investigates how kyōka poets acquired their knowledge of classical literature, discusses the way in which poets and illustrators visualized literature in their projects, and reflects on what their motivations were for referring to specific elements in cultural history. Shunman’s kokugaku connections have been elucidated by Tanaka, and kokugaku influences in two surimono series that Shunman designed in the first half of the 1810s have been researched by Carpenter.302 My investigation continues on their approach by tracing how other major kyōka poets and surimono designers were connected to intellectual networks of their time; in particular to scholars of the classical texts that inspired literary surimono series. Moreover, textual information in the surimono is matched to contemporaneous scholarship. Did knowledge of classical literature enter kyōka society via printed exegetical texts in commercial editions, or are ties to scholars generally so close that surimono creators had access to such knowledge already before the general public did? How did kyōka poets relate to the ideological underpinnings of the kokugaku movement? And is there any relation between birth class and the influx of cultural knowledge detectable in kyōka society? Answering these questions will clarify where surimono creators gained their understanding of the classical texts they visualized, and what role each of these creators played. -

Walcott. 131 pp. The development of new architectural styles, infrastructure and construction materials in the Meiji period (1868-1912 CE), is tied to the creation of a modern Japanese identity. Despite recent developments toward preserving important historic property in Japan, many lesser known historical and vernacular sites continue to be ignored and have been ruined over time. An academic study of historic preservation is rare in Japan and in geography. The main purpose of this research is to clarify the role of historic preservation and to identify it with the rise of Japanese nationalism, economic development, and construction of the built environment during the pivotal Meiji period. The natural setting and history of Japan was examined and strategic plans for potential improvement in the field of Japanese historic preservation in the future are illustrated using case studies of the preservation projects of the Ise Jingu, Horyu-ji, the Tomioka Silk Mill, the Tokyo Station, and the Meiji Mura. Kaempfer's Album of Famous Sights of Seventeenth Century Japan
KAEMPFER'S ALBUM OF FAMOUS SIGHTS OF SEVENTEENTH CENTURY JAPAN YU-YING BROWN WITHIN the covers of a large and weighty album bound in western style and preserved in The (Western) Manuscript Collections of the British Library (Add. MS. 5252; bearing Sloane's old classification 'Bibliothecae Sloanianae Min. 47') are to be found three groups of curiously varied material. The first consists of a series of fifty Japanese paintings executed in brilhant colours and in gold, each on paper measuring 215 x 322 mm. (ff. 1-50). They depict famous sights of Japan enlivened by vignettes of people engaged in a variety of activities, though mostly pleasure outings or pilgrimages to shrines, temples and scenic spots. The second comprises seven Japanese figure drawings mounted on ff. 53-59, together with three padded applique pictures (ff. 68-70), now identified as oshie (pressed pictures). The third group seems to be entirely Chinese in origin. It consists of twenty-six floral and figure pictures in silk brocade or embroidery (ff. 51, 52, 60-67, i00"i5)- These otherwise unrelated groups of items have one thing in common. They were all smuggled out of Japan in 1692 by the German physician and traveller, Dr Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716), and have all, until recently, lain dormant, in pristine condition, among the British Museum's foundation collections.^ This paper seeks to introduce the first and major part of the album only, namely the remarkable set of fifty miniature paintings. These are of unique importance for all historians of Japanese art and culture as well as for specialists in 'Kaempfer studies'. -

Almost all are Japanese terms. ISBN13 9789004235304; E-ISBN 9789004236332 Michael Wachutka’s monograph is the first in English dedicated to tracking and explaining the development of the kokugaku movement during the Meiji period. As Dr. Wachutka states, more often than not in Western academics the story of kokugaku ends just as modernity is said to begin, until new kokugaku arises in the writings of influential twentieth century scholars such as Yanagita Kunio and Orikuchi Shinobu. It is clearly important and necessary to explain this failure by omission of the academic community. Dr. Wachutka makes a case for the importance of his study based not only on the historical significance but also on the contemporary social relevance his results display. He makes another case for the importance of his work by highlighting his choice of the prosopographical method. He expresses the hope that a study based on collective biography can create the grounds for sound and meaningful generalization, while also preserving appreciation for the unique characteristics of the particular individuals for whom greater historical information is now readily available in English. -

Previous studies have interpreted kokugaku as a linguistically constituted communitarian movement that paved the way for the makings of Japanese national identity. My analysis demonstrates, however, that Norinaga¾by far the most well-known kokugaku thinker¾was more interested in pulling a fundamental ontology out from language than tying a politics of identity into it: grammatical codes, prosodic rhythms, and sounds and their attendant sensations were taken not as tools for interpersonal communication but as themselves visible and/or audible threads in the fabric of the cosmos. Norinaga’s work was thus undergirded by a positive understanding ii of language as ontologically grounded within the cosmos, a framework he borrowed implicitly from the seventeenth-century Shingon monk Keichū (1640-1701) and esoteric Buddhist (mikkyō) theories of language. Through philological investigation into ancient texts, both Norinaga and Keichū believed, the profane dust that clouded (sacred, cosmic) truth could be swept away, as if by a jeweled broom. -

As I write, the field of Japanese religion is saddened by the news that Carmen Blacker has passed away, on the morning of her Centre Activities Reports 85th birthday. Perhaps the most influential British scholar of Japanese religions, Carmen Blacker’s work opened up a new understanding of religious practices in Japan. She was 6 CSJR Spring International Workshop very supportive of the Centre, as she was of young scholars and of new initiatives, and I 8 Numata Lecture Series (2007-2008) have fond memories of her visits in the early years of the Centre. In doing so, I seek to challenge currently held, inaccurate views of the role played by this tradition in the history of Japanese esoteric Buddhism and Japanese religion more generally. The Tachikawa-ryū, which has yet to receive sustained attention in English-language scholarship, began in the twelfth century and later came to be denounced as heretical by mainstream Buddhist institutions. The project will be divided into four sections: three of these will each focus on a different chronological stage in the development of the Tachikawa-ryū, while the introduction will address the portrayal of this tradition in twentieth-century scholarship. Although it had a humanistic side, such as the liberation of human emotions that were repressed under the feudal regime, kokugaku 国 学 (national learning) has usually been defined as an ideoloery supporting the declining Tokugawa regime from the standpoint of the ruled. Some consider kokugaku to be lacking in modernity, a fact reflected in the incomplete character of Japan’s modernization. In his recent book, H. D. Harootunian defines kokugaku (which he translates “ nativism” )as a discourse and intends to change the concept of ideology itself. He criticizes the definition of kokugaku as being the ideological support for the Tokugawa polity on the part of the ruled. Such a definition implicitly or explicitly presupposes that ideology is a reflection of infrastructure and does not have an autonomous mean ing. Harootunian, however, emphasizes that ideology has a semi-autonomous function and produces reality rather than reflects it.
