Millian Liberalism and Extreme Pornography Nick Cowen King’s College London Abstract: How sexuality should be regulated in a liberal political community is an important, controversial theoretical and empirical question—as shown by the recent criminalization of possession of some adult pornography in the United Kingdom. Supporters of criminalization argue that Mill, often considered a staunch opponent of censorship, would support prohibition due to his feminist commitments. I argue that this account underestimates the strengths of the Millian account of private conduct and free expression, and the consistency of Millian anticensorship with feminist values. Undergraduate research is the pinnacle in undergraduate education as it truly is a comprehensive learning experience. One of the reasons I am so passionate about undergraduate research is that I have seen in some of my students over the years a transformation which is undeniable when they do an undergraduate research project. It requires the student to draw knowledge obtained from many different courses and venture into the unknown, where standardized laboratory experiments are a thing of the past. When research students discover something that has never before been known, it is most exhilarating. Seeing students transformed as a result of the undergraduate research experience is very rewarding. It is this I cherish as a teacher and researcher. The University of Montevallo Undergraduate Research Program coupled with the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program provide undergraduates from all fields of study the opportunity to conduct research under the guidance of an experienced faculty member. The relationship that is created and nurtured as these projects are carried out is remarkable. The guidance students receive in a research setting is undeniably one of the greatest benefits. In addition to learning research methods and improving critical thinking skills, completing an undergraduate research project affords the student an opportunity to present their research to their community of scholars at professional meetings and conferences. Learning to communicate the results they have obtained with the world around them is a feat in and of itself. This certainly assists students as they prepare for graduate school and their future career. -

List of paraphilias Paraphilias are sexual interests in objects, situations, or individuals that are atypical. The American Psychiatric Association, in its Paraphilia Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM), draws a Specialty Psychiatry distinction between paraphilias (which it describes as atypical sexual interests) and paraphilic disorders (which additionally require the experience of distress or impairment in functioning).[1][2] Some paraphilias have more than one term to describe them, and some terms overlap with others. Paraphilias without DSM codes listed come under DSM 302.9, "Paraphilia NOS (Not Otherwise Specified)". In his 2008 book on sexual pathologies, Anil Aggrawal compiled a list of 547 terms describing paraphilic sexual interests. He cautioned, however, that "not all these paraphilias have necessarily been seen in clinical setups. This may not be because they do not exist, but because they are so innocuous they are never brought to the notice of clinicians or dismissed by them. Like allergies, sexual arousal may occur from anything under the sun, including the sun."[3] Most of the following names for paraphilias, constructed in the nineteenth and especially twentieth centuries from Greek and Latin roots (see List of medical roots, suffixes and prefixes), are used in medical contexts only. Cet étalon n’a pas de selle : le barebacking dans la pornographie Nicolas SAUCIER Maîtrise en sociologie Université Laval, CÉLAT Résumé La pornographie est une industrie des plus intéressantes. Plus qu’un divertissent, c’est un média dans lequel on peut voir des discours de valeurs et d’idées et un agent d’imposition de plusieurs normes sexuelles (Mason-Grant, 2004). En s’appropriant ce média, les communautés de barebackers, prônant une idéologie de sexe non protégé entre hommes, transforment les normes sexuelles des communautés gays et véhiculent leurs discours. Étudier la pornographie bareback, comme véhicule du discours c’est tenter de les comprendre. Introduction Cet article est monté en deux volets. Premièrement, je me dois d'expliquer brièvement ce qu'est le barebacking, le contexte et les raisons de son émergence, principalement en me référant à Crossley (2001, 2004) et à Rofes (1998). Le second volet est plus une analyse de la pornographie gay bareback. Je vais y présenter quelques thèmes récurrents et ce que ces derniers nous enseignent sur les motivations et le discours des barebackers. Ces thèmes sont inspirés de mes travaux sur les forums et blogues de barebackers et le résultat de longues observations et analyse de la pornographie gay. Effectivement, pour écrire cette présentation, j'ai visionné de la pornographie : ceci comprend un corpus de plus de 60 longs- ou courts-métrages pornographiques et une quantité incalculable de petits vidéos en ligne. Ce corpus compte des films de toutes catégories, barebacks et certains non-barebacks, allant des classiques vintages aux fétiches des plus obscurs en passant par les films appelés «interraciaux», le cuir, les films japonais et le muscle worship1. -

I put recent research in surveillance studies, particularly work on informational doubling, in conversation with the concepts of the uncanny and the doppelgänger to reconsider the legacy of screen theory and cinematic discipline in relation to the ongoing ideological struggle between normativity and queerness. I begin my investigation in and around the Stonewall era examining the gothic roots and incarnation of gay identity. -

AMERICAN INFERNO by PATRICK DENKER (Under the Direction of Reginald McKnight) ABSTRACT American Inferno, a novel, is a loose transposition of Dante‟s Inferno into a contemporary American setting. Its chapters (or “circles”) correspond to Dante‟s nine circles of Hell: 1) Limbo, 2) Lust, 3) Gluttony, 4) Hoarding & Wasting, 5) Wrath, 6) Heresy, 7) Violence, 8) Fraud and 9) Treachery. The novel‟s Prologue — Circle 0 — corresponds to the events that occur, in the Inferno, prior to Dante‟s and Virgil‟s entrance into Hell proper. The novel is a contemporary American moral inquiry, not a medieval Florentine one: thus it is sometimes in harmony with and sometimes a critique of Dante‟s moral system. Also, like the Inferno, it is not an investigation just of its characters‟ personal moral struggles, but also of the historical sins of its nation: for Dante, the nascent Italian state; for us, the United States. Thus the novel follows the life story of its principal character as he progresses from menial to mortal sins while simultaneously considering American history from America‟s early Puritan foundations in the Northeast (Chapters 1-4) through slavery, civil war and manifest destiny (Chapters 5-7) to its ultimate expression in the high-technology West-Coast entertainment industry (Chapters 8-9). Male urethral stricture is prone to recurrence, ranging from 40% to 80% according to the length of stricture no matter what treatment is introduced. Therefore, it has long been a common challenge for urologists to handle the problem. Sounding or self-dilation has proved to be effective in reducing the recurrence rate significantly. However, a standard equipment set of urethral bougie is too expensive for a patient’s own use. On the other hand, the performance of regular outpatient sounding is time-consuming and costly. We present an easy way to perform urethral self-dilation using a stainless steel chopstick, which has proved to be cost effective and satisfactory for patients. From February 2001 to February 2003, 6 patients, with a mean age of 64.6 years (range 47–79), were introduced to this maneuver after a urethrotomy and were taught how to perform self-sounding with a stainless steel chopstick (18 Fr equivalent). The distance of advancement was determined individually by calibrating the location of the stricture. The long-term result of this maneuver was later checked with a telephone questionnaire about urination status in April 2005. -
