Raumplanung entpuppt sich dabei als ein umfassendes Herrschaftsinstrument zur Sicherung des Monopols über Palästina. Israel ist das Ergebnis eines zionistischen Großraumprojekts, dessen Ergebnis heute eine rassistische Gesellschaft ist, die sich jüdisch national definiert und einen ethnisch reinen, jüdischen Staat anstrebt. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ZAZ10TS AND ARTIS CELEBRATE URI KATZENSTEIN IN A NEW EXHIBITION, AND KICK OFF INTERNATIONAL EVENTS TO SPOTLIGHT HIS ARTISTRY The Multidisciplinary Artist Pushed Boundaries and Challenged Genres to Examine and Create Human Connections Through Art Image: Uri Katzenstein, Untitled, 2013-2015 Backyard Exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art New York-NY—ZAZ10TS, an ongoing cultural initiative that integrates art into the office building, façade and exterior at 10 Times Square in New York City (1441 Broadway), and Artis, an independent nonprofit that supports contemporary artists from Israel, collaborated to present a joint exhibition, YOU NEVER KNOW, celebrating the artistic contributions of the late Israeli artist Uri Katzenstein. The exhibition will launch on January 31, 2019 with a public reception held in the lobby of ZAZ10TS’ office building at 10 Times Square, and remain open to the public and on display at the location through April 28, 2019. This event also marks the first of several commemorative events taking place in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa, Israel, as well as New York City and Amsterdam. New Exhibition Uri Katzenstein focused his artistic expression on video projects and installations in the latter stages of his career. Using video allowed him to incorporate other elements from his repertoire such as sculpture, performance art and music. His video pieces, including several in the YOU NEVER KNOW exhibition, were often provocative, violent, profane and purposely confusing. Stories he told though video related to the juxtaposition of opposites such as the real and surreal, humanity and non-human objects, and relationships between disparate concepts and experiences. -
Ran Slavinʼs Work Is Centered on Time Based Media (Video, Cinema
Ran Slavinʼs work is centered on time based media (video, cinema, sound composition) and the use of electronic technologies to explore dynamic juxtapositions between photography, fiction and digital media. His work is cross media and project based, often site specific, often citing the digital implications and increasing virtuality of our environment and times. With digital tools and insights, Rans work seeks to probe through chaos, unchartered territories of beauty (yes beauty) and compositions that bestow the uncanny through examinations of dream influenced arrangements of film narratives, fusing the digital and real, narratives of disorientation escalating to sci-fi and fiction. Ran has grew up with the digital tools of his generation which renewed the use and outlook of the image and video with post production sensibilities in mind. In his video installations films and soundtracks, characters and worlds of unresolved mysteries unfold, reconstructed dreams that entangle in fiction lead through a crime investigation in Tokyo (Call for Dreams feature film 2018) through unconventional (some might say experimental) visual story telling. Other works like “Variations Amud Anan” (video installation) assemble and examine dislocation, mythology, geo-political war with fiction intertwining in the southern Israeli desert of the Negev. Digital meditation and synthetic multiscreen environments immerse the viewer in “World5” multi channel video installation at The Herzliya Museum of Art (2016) a gun shot wounded man wakes in an underground parking lot trying to reconstruct his memory while a tied woman in a hotel room in Shanghai is plotting with a stranger on a phone (The Insomniac City Cycles film) or a medieval sci-fi quantum-quasi religious odyssey revealed by a young boy under Jerusalemʼs old city (“Ursulimum”) or the sound-synched barking people and barking dogs (Everything Is Urgent video). -

Katzenstein Was Considered One of the Pioneers of Performance Art in Israel, but in Recent Years He Has Become Famous for His Sculptures

Katzenstein was one of the most prominent Israeli artists, winner of the Sandel prize, represented Israel in Biennales, and characterized himself in a blunt fashion. In his work in Vienna, he wrote on a wall with his own blood: “In our culture the language is secret”. He was a member of some musical groups, one of which included Ohad Pishuf. Picture: Moti Milrod Katsenstein in 2015 next to his work: “Backyard” Katzenstein was considered one of the pioneers of performance art in Israel, but in recent years he has become famous for his sculptures. During his career, he won several prestigious titles and prizes, including the Dizengoff Prize (2017) and the Sandel Prize (2014). His last exhibition was exhibited earlier this year at Hezi Cohen Gallery. Katzenstein was born in 1951 in Tel Aviv, the only son of German-born parents who immigrated to Israel before the Holocaust. In 1973, he participated as a reserve soldier in the Yom Kippur War, from which he returned with post traumatic stress disorder. He studied art at the Avni School in Tel Aviv and then went to the United States. He earned his first degree at the University of Indiana and an MA in San Francisco. After his studies, he integrated into the performance scene, which took a significant place in the art world in New York. He introduced his works in some of the most important spaces in this field in the 1980s, such as The Kitchen and No-Se-No. -

Ferdinand Hodler and Modernist Berlin 10.9.21 – 17.1.22 Ferdinand Hodler’s evocative figure paintings, moun- tain landscapes and portraits are Modernist icons. The Swiss artist (1853–1918), an influential force in symbolism, drew great international acclaim even in his own lifetime. Contemporaries valued Hodler above all as a master of human characterisation: as the artist Paul Klee noted in 1911, he could “create the soul by painting the body”. Few people realise today that Hodler’s path to fame lay through Berlin. At the dawn of the 20th century, the capital of the German Berlinische Galerie, © Foto: Noshe Reich had become a leading hub of European art alongside Paris, Vienna and Munich. These cities Exhibitions offered Hodler a chance to publicise his work outside Switzerland. The exhibition “Ferdinand Hodler and Modernist Berlin” traces his success on the banks of 2 021/22 the Spree. From 1898 until the outbreak of the First World War, the artist exhibited here almost annually: first at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition, then at the Berlin Secession and in a number of galleries. The presentation at the Berlinische Galerie will bring together about 50 paintings by Hodler from German and Swiss collections, including 30 from the Kunst- museum Bern, our partner in this collaboration. It will also feature works by artists who exhibited with Hodler in Berlin, including Lovis Corinth, Walter Leistikow, Hans Thoma and Julie Wolfthorn. The exhibition is a cooperation between the Berlinische Galerie and the Kunstmuseum Bern. -

Exporting Zionism: Architectural Modernism in Israeli-African Technical Cooperation, 1958-1973 Ayala Levin Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Ayala Levin All rights reserved ABSTRACT Exporting Zionism: Architectural Modernism in Israeli-African Technical Cooperation, 1958-1973 Ayala Levin This dissertation explores Israeli architectural and construction aid in the 1960s – “the African decade” – when the majority of sub-Saharan African states gained independence from colonial rule. In the Cold War competition over development, Israel distinguished its aid by alleging a postcolonial status, similar geography, and a shared history of racial oppression to alleviate fears of neocolonial infiltration. I critically examine how Israel presented itself as a model for rapid development more applicable to African states than the West, and how the architects negotiated their professional practice in relation to the Israeli Foreign Ministry agendas, the African commissioners' expectations, and the international disciplinary discourse on modern architecture. I argue that while architectural modernism was promoted in the West as the International Style, Israeli architects translated it to the African context by imbuing it with nation-building qualities such as national cohesion, labor mobilization, skill acquisition and population dispersal. Bauhaus Transfers to Mandatory Palestine Introduction A “Bauhaus style” would be a setback to academic stagnation, into a state of inertia hostile to life, the combatting of which the Bauhaus was once founded. May the Bauhaus be saved from this death. Walter Gropius, 1930 The construction activities of the Jewish community in the British Mandate of Palestine represents a prominent paradigm for the spread of European avant-garde architecture. In the 1930s, there is likely no comparable example for the interaction of a similar variety of influences in such a confined space. The reception of architectural modernism – referred to as “Neues Bauen” in Germany – occurred in the context of a broad cultural transfer process, which had already begun in the wake of the waves of immigration (“Aliyot”) from Eu- rope at the end of the nineteenth century and had a formative effect within the emancipating Jewish community in Palestine (“Yishuv”). Among the growing number of immigrants who turned their backs on Europe with the rise of fas- cism and National Socialism were renowned intellectuals, artists, and archi- tects.
