  • WWE: Wrestling, Wellness & Entertainment – an Analysis of Work and Health in Professional Wrestling
WWE: Wrestling, Wellness & Entertainment – An Analysis of Work and Health in Professional Wrestling By Joseph Fargiorgio A Thesis Presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Sociology Guelph, Ontario, Canada © Joseph Fargiorgio, 2014 ABSTRACT WWE: WRESTLING, WELLNESS & ENTERTAINMENT – AN ANALYSIS OF WORK AND HEALTH IN PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING Joseph Fargiorgio Advisor: University of Guelph, 2014 Professor Vivian Shalla Within the past fifteen years, a significant number of professional wrestlers have died before age 45, with the most publicized case being the Chris Benoit double murder suicide of 2007. A significant lack of academic research has been conducted on the nature of work in professional wrestling and on the impact of such work on the physical and mental health of wrestlers. Interviews with 10 currently active professional wrestlers were conducted between November 2012 and February 2013 to learn about work in wrestling, specifically how they view their own work in regard to their overall health and lifestyle. Using a standpoint perspective, this study explores the working life and health of professional wrestlers in the Untied States through the experiences of professional wrestlers working in the industry. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis could not have been possible without the professional wrestlers who participated in this project. Thank you very much for your help, providing your insights, and sharing your world with me. Thank you to Dr. Vivian Shalla for advising me on this project. Thank you for your encouraging words, your advice, and your meticulous work editing the various drafts of this thesis. Your kindness and dedication to your students does not go unnoticed.

  • Year Ago, Inspired by the Dr. Keith Presents Annuals of 2011 and 2012, We Published
year ago, inspired by the Dr. Keith Presents Annuals of 2011 and 2012, we published the Ainaugural Cubed Circle Yearbook, attempting to encapsulate what was a pivotal year for professional wrestling in 2014. This year we hope to do the same, albeit for a year of a decidedly different sort. 2015 was dissimilar to 2014 in many respects. It didn't see moments as grandiose as the end of the Undertaker's Streak, Daniel Bryan's WrestleMania victory, or the Guerrero-Atlantis mask match. When evaluated from afar 2015 may even appear stagnant in comparison, as did many of the world's largest and most influential promotions during the year – WWE, NJPW, and CMLL in particular. But, upon closer inspection, the seemingly motionless landscape of 2015 wasn't only very much alive, but both morose and vibrant, disheartening and emboldening. The open wrestling fan of 2015 had more choice and freedom than perhaps ever before, with some ardent observers of the industry even abandoning Monday Night RAW for lack of faith in the lumbering weekly juggernaut. Some turned to Lucha Underground, a show that garnered considerable cult popularity. Others looked to alternative facets of the company such as NXT, which grew beyond what many considered its zenith at the end of 2014, harbouring one of the better years for American women's wrestling in decades. AAA showed promise and ambition on several fronts, but was subject to unfortunate, and at times tragic, circumstances. NJPW was as repetitive creatively as it had been under the Kidani administration, but produced one of the best nights of wrestling of the last several years in WrestleKingdom 9 – made more readily available to an American audience than ever before.

ABSTRACT DONG, CHERYL XUE. “Why Don’t You Die For the People?” Memory and Martyrdom in the Black Panther Party. (Under the direction of Dr. Blair L.M. Kelley). My dissertation explores the concept of martyrdom in the Black Panther Party. It challenges established narratives of violence and the Black Panther Party by showing how the Panthers used confrontations with law enforcement as a creative force to shed light on the struggles of poor black communities. By publicly performing suffering and death nationally, the Panthers politicized not just police brutality, but a number of institutional inequalities within the criminal justice system and elsewhere. The dissertation is divided into three case studies: the assassination of Fred Hampton in Chicago, the trial of Ericka Huggins in New Haven, and the campaign against urban renewal in Winston-Salem. Together, they run the spectrum from nationally publicized trials to more localized struggles for community services. Finally, I consider issues of contested memory and memorialization of the Panthers. The various case studies draw a direct throughline between the struggles of the Panthers in the 1960s and 1970s to social movements like Black Lives Matter, enabling a longer historical view of black radicalism and protest. © Copyright 2020 Cheryl Dong All Rights Reserved “Why Don’t You Die For the People?” Memory and Martyrdom in the Black Panther Party by Cheryl Xue Dong A dissertation submitted to the Graduate Faculty of North Carolina State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Public History Raleigh, North Carolina 2020 APPROVED BY: _______________________________ _______________________________ Blair L.M.
