Jews and Christians: Perspectives on Mission The Lambeth-Jewish Forum Reuven Silverman, Patrick Morrow and Daniel Langton Jews and Christians: Perspectives on Mission The Lambeth-Jewish Forum Both Christianity and Judaism have a vocation to mission. In the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, God’s people are spoken of as a light to the nations. Yet mission is one of the most sensitive and divisive areas in Jewish-Christian relations. For Christians, mission lies at the heart of their faith because they understand themselves as participating in the mission of God to the world. As the recent Anglican Communion document, Generous Love, puts it: “The boundless life and perfect love which abide forever in the heart of the Trinity are sent out into the world in a mission of renewal and restoration in which we are called to share. As members of the Church of the Triune God, we are to abide among our neighbours of different faiths as signs of God’s presence with them, and we are sent to engage with our neighbours as agents of God’s mission to them.”1 As part of the lifeblood of Christian discipleship, mission has been understood and worked out in a wide range of ways, including teaching, healing, evangelism, political involvement and social renewal. Within this broad and rich understanding of mission, one key aspect is the relation between mission and evangelism. In particular, given the focus of the Lambeth-Jewish Forum, how does the Christian understanding of mission affects relations between Christianity and Judaism? Christian mission and Judaism has been controversial both between Christians and Jews, and among Christians themselves. -

The evangelical community in the US remains steadfastly Zionist, so overall support for financial aid to Israel remain secure. But the cultural impact of accusations that Israel is a settler colonialist or apartheid regime are nonetheless serious; they are proving sufficient to make support for the Jewish state a political issue for the first time in many decades. Despite a general movement in emphasis from theology to politics in church debate, there remain theological issues at the center of church discussion. The Protestant church with the longest running and most well-funded anti-Zionist constituency is the Presbyterian church in the US. In the last decade, its Israel/Palestine Mission Network (IPMN) has produced several increasingly anti-Zionist books designed to propel divestment resolutions in the church’s annual meeting. The most widely debated of these was 2014’s Zionism Unsettled: A Congregational Study Guide. This essay mounts a detailed analysis and critique of the book which documents the IPMN’s steady movement toward antisemitic positions. Among the theological issues underlying debate in Protestant denominations are the status of the divine covenant with the Jewish people, the role that the gift of land has as part of that covenant, and the nature of the characterization of the Jews as a “chosen people”. -

Studies in Christian-Jewish Relations REVIEW Lloyd Kim Polemic in the Book of Hebrews: Anti-Judaism, Anti-Semitism, or Supersessionism?, Princeton Theological Monograph Series 64 (Eugene, OR: Pickwick Publications, 2006) xiv + 222 pp. Andrew Massena, Boston College The new perspective(s) on Paul and other critical reexamina- tions of traditional antisemitic, anti-Judaic, and supersessionist interpretations of New Testament texts have, since the latter half of the twentieth century, focused on the Pauline epistles and the gospels. The fruits of such rereadings have been monumental in generating new understandings of the Jewish identity of several of the authors and of concepts like Law, jus- tification, and gentile mission. However, one text that has not figured as largely in these conversations is the Epistle to the Hebrews. In his book, Polemic in the Book of Hebrews, Lloyd Kim sets out to help amend this imbalance. His goal, simply put, is “to determine whether the epistle to the He- brews is anti-Semitic, anti-Judaic or supersessionistic, and if so, to what extent” (p. 1). In chapter one, Kim reviews prior scholarship on the epistle. Though Hebrews has not figured as largely in critical reexami- nations, it has garnered some attention. Kim observes that most of the verdicts of possible antisemitism, anti-Judaism, or supersessionism have found the epistle unquestionably guilty (p. 8-16). With the December 2015 publication of “The Gifts and the Calling of God are Irrevocable”2 (G&C), the Pontifical Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews (CRRJ) joined a chorus of Jewish and Christian scholars that have long called for the repudiation of supersessionism.3 Though Catholic teaching about Jews and Judaism after Nostra Aetate has developed according to what G&C refers to as a “new theolog- ical framework” that emphasizes the positive and ongoing theological significance of God’s covenant with the Jewish people, the CRRJ had not previ- ously explicitly rejected supersessionism.4 As I show below, G&C makes this rejection explicit. 1 Portions of this article were originally written for a paper entitled, “Has the Church Replaced the Jewish People in God’s Divine Plan?: Reflections for Dialogue and Trust between the Two Commu- nities,” delivered at the 28th Annual Catholic-Jewish Colloquium, with response by Rabbi Peter Hass, April 7, 2016, at the Center for Pastoral Leadership of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, Wickliffe, Ohio. Yet the Gospel of John exhibits a particularly strained relationship with Judaism, especially through its frequent description of Jesus’s opponents as “the Jews,” its presentation of numerous hostile exchanges between Jesus and characters described as “Jews,” and its application of significant Jewish imagery (e.g., “the temple of his body,” “I am the true vine”) to the person of Jesus rather than to traditional Jewish institutions or figures. This dissertation argues that the Gospel of John presents Jesus as the one through whom the Jewish tradition realizes its eschatological hopes in continuity with the stories and symbols of its past. -

These include whether Catholics should pray for the conversion of Jews, whether the purpose of interreligious dialogue is to lead others to Christian faith, and whether Catholics should undertake non-coercive "missions" to Jews. An underlying theological topic in all these disputes is how the biblical concept of "covenant" is understood in the Jewish and Catholic traditions and in terms of their interrelationship. The resolution of these questions could set the pattern of official Catholic-Jewish relations for many years. !1 What is Supersessionism? Is it Biblical? By Dr. Gerald McDermott Going to Israel to explore its ancient Jewish and Christian roots raises a hot question in the churches and synagogues today: Is the New Testament supersessionist, as most Christians for most of the last 2000 years have believed? That is, did the Church supersede Israel, so that after 33AD the people of Israel and the land of Israel no longer mattered to God? Supersessionism is also called “replacement theology,” which means that the Church replaced Israel. This view says that the covenant God made with Abraham and his descendants in Israel has been transferred to Christians so that God’s new covenant with the Church replaces the covenant He made with Jews. Christians who teach this say that the Church is the “New Israel.” In order to deal with these issues, we must understand what has come to be called Christian Zionism. Most of us are familiar with the standard narrative about Christian Zionism. It is allegedly a result of bad exegesis and zany theology. While many scholars concede that the Hebrew Bible is clearly Zionist (that is, that its primary focus is on a covenant with a particular people and land, both called Israel, and the land sometimes called Zion), they typically insist that the New Testament drops this focus on a particular land and people, and replaces it with a universal vision for all peoples across the globe. Eretz Yisrael (Hebrew for “the land of Israel”) is said to be replaced by ge (Greek for “land” or “earth”) the latter of which is usually translated the whole “earth.” Concern with Jews as !2 Jews is thought to be absent from the New Testament—except to insist that there is no longer any significant difference between Jew and Greek (Gal 3:28). -

As a liminal moment during a time of increasing Christianization of the Roman Empire and of flourishing Christian, Jewish, and pagan cultures, scholars of the period face exciting ques- tions about the interactions between these worlds. It is a time of both defining and simultaneously transgressing boundaries. This especially applies to the Christian scholar Jerome (ca. 348-419), who famously translated the Bible from Hebrew to Latin (“according to the Hebrew Truth”), later known as the Vulgate. He had unique encounters with the Hebrew text, Jewish traditions of interpretation, actual Jews, and the promised land. In a new monograph, William L. Krewson address- es these subjects in great detail by directly confronting a long-standing scholarly crux: How can we explain Jerome’s positive assessment of Jewish scholarship with his hostile statements about Jews and Judaism? According to the author, the answer lies in his radical engagement with Jewish texts, biblical exegesis, and the land of Israel, all of which shape an innovative theology of supersessionism. In contrast to the prevailing view that his inconsistent portrayal of Jews can be at- tributed to rhetorical positionings, ad hoc contingencies, or personal idiosyncrasies, Krewson argues that “Jerome’s ambivalence [toward the Hebrew text and canon, and more broadly, toward Jews and Judaism] is not a problem to be solved but a reflection of his agenda” (p.
