The problem of this thesis is to examine the military- press relationship inNigeria from 1966 to 1979 and to determine whether activities of the military government contributed to violation of press freedom by prior restraint, postpublication censorship and penalization. Newspaper and magazine articles related to this study were analyzed. Interviews with some journalists and mili- tary personnel were also conducted. Materials collected show that the military violated some aspects of press freedom, but in most cases, however, journalists were free to criticize government activities. The judiciary prevented the military from arbitrarily using its power against the press. The findings show that although the military occasionally attempted suppressing the press, there are few instances that prove that journalists were denied press freedom.     African Newspapers Currently Received by American Libraries Compiled by Mette Shayne Revised Summer 1999 INTRODUCTION This union list updates African Newspapers Currently Received by American Libraries compiled by Daniel A. Britz, Working Paper no. 8 African Studies Center, Boston, 1979. The holdings of 19 collections and the Foreign Newspapers Microfilm Project were surveyed during the summer of 1999. Material collected currently by Library of Congress, Nairobi (marked DLC#) is separated from the material which Nairobi sends to Library of Congress in Washington. The decision was made to exclude North African papers. These are included in Middle Eastern lists and in many of the reporting libraries entirely separate division handles them. Criteria for inclusion of titles on this list were basically in accord with the UNESCO definition of general interest newspapers. However, a number of titles were included that do not clearly fit into this definition such as religious newspapers from Southern Africa, and labor union and political party papers. Daily and less frequently published newspapers have been included. Frequency is noted when known. Sunday editions are listed separately only if the name of the Sunday edition is completely different from the weekday edition or if libraries take only the Sunday or only the weekday edition. Microfilm titles are included when known. Some titles may be included by one library, which in other libraries are listed as serials and, therefore, not recorded. In addition to enabling researchers to locate African newspapers, this list can be used to rationalize African newspaper subscriptions of American libraries. It is hoped that this list will both help in the identification of gaps and allow for some economy where there is substantial duplication.

This is understandable, although it has led to the neglect of other aspects of the history and contemporary structure of the Nigerian press. This paper explores one of the crucial yet neglected aspects of this history, i.e. the origin of the process of commercialization of the press and its implications for journalism practice. It argues that commercialization signalled the end of the so-called 'political' press which many commentators still refer to. Well, I will be, as soon as I get my bicycle flat tire fixed. – Jarod Kintz Abstract The newspaper has been a part of the intellectual culture of the University of Lagos since its inception in 1962. The history of the institution will therefore remain largely incomplete without the documentation of the activities of the vendor who dominated the landscape for more than twenty five years. This paper attempts to highlight the life and career of Mr. Philip Nwadigwu Abasiri, popularly known as Man-Must- Wack. His experience in Onitsha and Lagos in the 1940s illustrates some of the key issues in rural-urban drift which is still a major problem in Nigeria today. He started selling his newspapers in the University in 1964 and the business expanded with the evolution of the faculties. By the time he retired from active business in the late 1980s, he had planted two of his sons in the business. The paper also highlights how the personal characteristics and trade techniques that ensured his success as a vendor can be harnessed to reduce the rate of unemployment in Nigeria. While Internet use is high in many Nigerian universities, how much the staff and students know about, and read online newspapers is uncertain. This study adopts survey to determine which Nigerian online newspapers are known, and read in selected Nigerian universities; factors affecting readership; and how readership contributes to human development. Findings indicate that Nigerian online newspapers are well-known among staff and students of the selected Nigerian universities, but only a few of them spend above 40% of browsing time reading Nigerian newspapers online. However, the online newspapers had significant impact of staff and students of the selected universities in the areas of enriching their knowledge on important issues; enabling them to enlighten others on important issues; and correcting their impressions on issues. This indicates that level of their dependency on the online newspapers is high even though circumstances beyond their control force many of them to spend short time reading the online newspapers.

In this dissertation, I show how the complexity and tensions of this shift have helped shape, and are reflected in the Nigerian beauty pageant industry. Drawing on a case study of three beauty pageants, two national and one international, I compare the production, symbolism, and political controversies surrounding each pageant and the way it represents the Nigerian nation. I use these cases to argue that national identity exists at multiple levels and is constructed through and towards both national and international audiences. Organizers, contestants, corporate sponsors, fans and opposition groups manage and present the nation through pageants. They negotiate between highlighting cultural diversity within the country and displaying a shared national culture in a global world.

Created by Fela Anikulapo-Kuti (1938-1997), the genre blends scathing anti-establishment lyrics with Yoruba traditional music and Western forms, particularly jazz. Fela’s ideological dictum: “Music is the Weapon of the Future,” encapsulates his view of music as an oppositional tool, his enactment of which led to frequent violent confrontations with the Nigerian state. Throughout his lifetime, Fela held hegemonic sway over afrobeat’s stylistic and ideological trajectories. However, following his death, the genre has witnessed a global upsurge with protégés emerging in New York City, San Francisco, Paris, London and other cultural capitals of the world. In my dissertation, I chronicle afrobeat’s transnational networks and discuss processes of stylistic and ideological affiliation through which such networks have emerged.
