The American Academy of Nursing is engaged in a number of initiatives that directly influence health.

These initiatives are aimed at policy, leadership, science, and practice. Throughout the conference, these initiatives will be highlighted; showing how the Academy’s efforts have significant impact. Our Institute for Nursing Leadership, Raise the Voice/EdgeRunners, Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science, Expert Panels, Choosing Wisely, and our view through the lens of social justice rounds out the Karen S. This year’s conference explores the contributions that nurses are making to drive policy that will create healthier populations. We will highlight nursing initiatives that are transforming health, leading change and influencing policy. As always, the topics are consistent with our strategic goals and are designed to engage you in a dialogue through interactive panels, open forums, poster sessions, a leadership workshop, and our very popular policy dialogues. Welcome to the American Academy of Nursing’s 2018 Annual Policy Conference!

Our colleagues on the conference planning advisory committee join us in welcoming you to this celebration of the Academy’s culture of recognition, engagement, and philanthropy. We are excited to welcome 195 new fellows, as we gather to celebrate and learn about more about their amazing work. We also gather to both learn more about the complexities of health policy and to engage in scholarly dialogue about how Kaye Bender the Academy can contribute to improving the health of the nation through informing sound and effective health policy. PhD, RN, FAAN, Chair We listened to the attendees of last year’s conference, and as a result, we have added some exciting perspectives based on their feedback. This year’s policy conference includes a candid look at all aspects of health policy development including evidence, advocacy, communication and implementation, all through the lens of social justice and health equity. The Academy’s approach to this year’s conference addresses some of the most compelling challenges in advancing policy. Thursday afternoon’s opening keynote, by Dr. Michael McGinnis, Leonard D. Additional plenary sessions throughout the conference will focus on Evidence-Based Health Policy and Regulations; The Role of Evidence in Health Policy Communications; and Implicit Bias in Healthcare Interactions: Implications for Policy. Dr. Alicia Georges, an Academy fellow and President of the AARP, will close the conference with a riveting challenge A View from the Kenneth R. White Top: A Call to Action for Nursing Leadership in Sustaining Health Policy. There is no doubt PhD, AGACNP-BC, ACHPN, that you will leave this conference more knowledgeable and more inspired to see health FACHE, FAAN, Co-Chair policy as a major tool in improving the health of our population. In between those plenaries and panels are a series of Policy Dialogues that address high priority topics identified with input from Expert Panels. The topics for this year’s Policy Dialogues are: climate change and environmental health; toxic stress in children; trauma-informed care; opioids and social justice; the quadruple aim and healthy work environments; and the effects of federal legislation on reproductive rights and family health. Rheba de Tornyay Development Fund

To quote Dr. de Tornyay, “We are a small group charged with setting the course for a large and essential profession.” The effectiveness of the Academy, in part, depends on a healthy Development Fund. The Academy’s Rheba de Tornyay Development Fund is challenging each Fellow to establish their presence in the Academy. The ways in which a Fellow’s presence can be felt includes active participation on an expert panel or committee; sponsorship of a New Fellow, Living Legend, or Honorary Fellow; or donation of a monetary gift that is at a level meaningful to them. When you consider a gift to a new Fellow, please consider a gift to the Rheba de Tornyay Development Fund. You may donate online at www.AANnet.org or on-site at the Academy Shoppes.
