This year, the Academy’s Board of Directors, in collaboration with our 24 Expert Panels, came together to think strategically about the organization’s impact and influence. The resulting work provides a framework of the Academy’s three overarching policy priorities: • Advance Health Equity & Champion Wellness • Promote Innovation & Sustainability • Reduce Patient, Provider, & System Burden Karen S. Cox With these goals in mind, the Academy has focused its policy work on addressing the larger PhD, RN, FACHE, FAAN public health crises facing the nation and the world. This year’s conference, centered on the theme Our Social Responsibility to Health: Impact and Influence, highlights the innovation and commitment of nurses and our colleagues who have leveraged their voice to usher in change. From our keynote presentations, Impact and Influence: The Power of Connecting with the Public given by Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (D-IL) to Defining Belonging given by Dr. LisaColeman, weopentheconversationtonewwaysofthinking, engaging, andactinginan increasingly complex healthcare and political system. Threaded throughout the conference is our purposeful focus on the role of the social determinants of health as we strive not only for better policies, but also for the creation of partnerships to achieve them. AstheAcademycelebratesournewclassofFellows, distinguishedLivingLegends, and Honorary Fellows— the pinnacle of our time together— it presents us with the opportunity to reflect on the past and envision the future. The Academy honors individuals, but our strength has been and always will be our collective work. The Academy is a policy organization with three signature initiatives- Leadership (Institute for Nursing Leadership), Science (Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science), and Innovation (Edge Runners). Nursing leadership, nursing science, and nursing innovation WILL help change the course of policy and ultimately lead to healthier individuals, families, communities, and populations. Your Board of Directors looks forward to great collaboration, conversation, and celebration at this year’s conference. I am honored to be a part of a Board that spent critical time over the past 12 months focusing on our future as well as our present. We look forward to presenting our work at the business meeting. Cox, PhD, RN, FACHE, FAAN President, American Academy of Nursing OCTOBER 24-26, 2019 | Marriott Marquis | Washington, DC | 3 WELCOME MESSAGES Dear Friends and Colleagues: As I reflect on my first year as CEO, I am struck by the generosity of time, resources, and sin- cere dedication given by the Academy’s President, Dr. Karen Cox, Board of Directors, Com- mittee and Expert Panel members, and Fellows. Together we explored a vision for the future, thoughtfully considered the Academy’s impact, and created an open dialogue to think differ- ently while honoring the organization’s rich history. What I observed and felt in all of these conversations was the passion and commitment to leveraging our collective strength for real and meaningful change to health and healthcare. Suzanne Miyamoto That excitement was equally mirrored by an incredibly dedicated Academy staff. Just as it has PhD, RN, FAAN been my honor to support our Board and Fellows over this past year, it has been a privilege to work side-by-side with the Academy’s current team. I witnessed their receptivity to creativity and the Academy will continue on a trajectory of impact and influence with their expertise, skills, and leadership. You will hear those two words— impact and influence— quite a bit over the next few days. It is the lifeblood of our organization. We are constantly striving to realize what we know to be the full potential of our organization’s reach by considering how we tell the story, provide the evidence, and ultimately turn the tide. Your presence at this year’s conference is a testament to that same devotion— that nursing’s voice and leadership is amplified when we come together for a common goal. The plenary panels at this year’s conference, Media Partnerships to Champion Health and Worldwide Health, Local Impact, will inspire discussion on how influence is defined and how real impact is made. Our policy dialogues will facilitate conversation and address ways to ap- proach the top issues affecting the profession: the impact of provider burden on wellness, the future of technology and personalized health, and how to mitigate microaggressions that inhibit us from moving forward together. Thank you for your active involvement in this conference and in the Academy’s policy work throughout the year. On behalf of the Academy staff, we express our deep appreciation to the planners, speakers, sponsors, volunteers, and attendees who make this policy conference inspiring and successful. I am excited to celebrate with you (new Fellows, Living Legends, and Honorary Fellows), engage thoughtfully in the conference sessions, and support this great organization’s continued growth! Sincerely, Suzanne Miyamoto, PhD, RN, FAAN CEO, American Academy of Nursing 4 | OCTOBER 24-26, 2019 | Marriott Marquis | Washington, DC WELCOME MESSAGES Welcome to the American Academy of Nursing’s 2019 Transforming Health, Driving Policy Conference! Our colleagues on the conference planning committee join us in welcoming you to this celebration of the Academy’s culture focused on recognition, engagement, and philanthropy. We are excited to honor 231 new fellows, as we gather to share their outstanding contributions to improving healthcare and implementing policy. We also assemble to consider how we can heighten our individual and collective strength as we strive for better health across the country and around the globe. Kenneth R. White This year’s conference is a culmination of year-long planning in which the Committee reviewed the PhD, AGACNP-BC, feedback from previous years and explored factors facing the profession, the healthcare system, ACHPN, FACHE, FAAN and each of us as individuals. Considering the policy work the Academy has undertaken in the last year and the Board of Directors call for our organization to focus on impact, the theme is Our Social Responsibility to Health: Impact and Influence.
