Box 4783, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates Abstract.—This paper provides an updated checklist of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) native and alien herpetofauna. The UAE, while largely a desert country with a hyper-arid climate, also has a range of more mesic habitats such as islands, mountains, and wadis. As such it has a diverse native herpetofauna of at least 72 species as follows: two amphibian species (Bufonidae), five marine turtle species (Cheloniidae [four] and Dermochelyidae [one]), 42 lizard species (Agamidae [six], Gekkonidae [19], Lacertidae [10], Scincidae [six], and Varanidae [one]), a single amphisbaenian, and 22 snake species (Leptotyphlopidae [one], Boidae [one], Colubridae [seven], Hydrophiidae [nine], and Viperidae [four]). Additionally, we recorded at least eight alien species, although only the Brahminy Blind Snake (Ramphotyplops braminus) appears to have become naturalized. We also list legislation and international conventions pertinent to the herpetofauna. BOUNDARY HILL SOUTH PROJECT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT Volume 5 – Appendices February 2014 BOUNDARY HILL SOUTH PROJECT P2 Terrestrial Fauna Assessment NOTE: At the time of preparation of this technical assessment, the Project site included a larger footprint of 1,069 hectares. In June 2013, a decision was made to reduce the size of the Project site by removing a portion of the Mining Lease Application (MLA) area. This portion of the site, otherwise known as the Timber Reserve area, has been removed from the Project MLA and will not be subject to mining activity as part of the Project. This amendment to the MLA boundary reduces the size of the Project site from 1,069 hectares to 630 hectares. As such, the terrestrial fauna assessment has been undertaken within a broader survey area and included the Timber Reserve area. Whilst the terrestrial fauna survey was undertaken over the broader study area to include the originally proposed MLA, the impact assessment contained in Chapter 12A Terrestrial Ecology considers the revised Project area of 630 hectares. REV1 SHORT SUMMARY OF CONCLUSIONS OF THE 27TH MEETING OF THE SCIENTIFIC 1 REVIEW GROUP ON TRADE IN WILD FAUNA AND FLORA HELD IN BRUSSELS ON 9 OCTOBER 2003 The SRG took the following decisions under Articles 4.1(a)(i) and 4.2(a) of Regulation 338/97: 1) Negative opinions2 for import of specimens from the following species/ countries combinations: Ursos arctos Croatia Ursus thibetanus Russian Federation Cataphyllia jardinei Solomon Islands Tillandsia xerographica Guatemala (with option of specific cases being brought back to the SRG) 2) Negative opinions for import of specimens of the following species/countries combinations confirmed after 3rd countries’ consultation to be formalised in the Suspensions regulation: Canis lupus (hunting trophies) Belarus Cercopithecus mona Togo Cercopithecus petaurista Togo Colobus polykomos Togo Perodicticus potto Togo Profelis aurata Togo Palaeosuchus trigonatus Guyana Tridacna derasa New Caledonia, Philippines, Palau Tridacna maxima New Caledonia Tridacna squamosa New Caledonia 3) Negative opinions maintained but not to be formalised in the Suspensions regulation: Ursus arctos Slovenia Caiman yacare Paraguay Amazona aestiva Paraguay 1 Subject to confirmation by the Members of the Scientific Review Group. These opinions will remain valid unless or until circumstances related to the trade or conservation status of the species change significantly. 2 Recommendation based on the following guidelines: The species is in trade or is likely to be in trade, and introduction to the Community from the country of origin at current or anticipated levels of trade is likely to have a harmful effect on the conservation status of the species or the extent of the territory occupied by the species. -
