Abstract Glycosidases are the enzymes involved in various biochemical processes related to metabolic disorders and diseases. Therefore, much effort has been focused on searching novel pharmacotherapy for the treatment of these ailments from medicinal plants due to higher safety margins. To pursue these efforts, the present study was performed to evaluate the Į-glucosidase inhibitory activities of thirty Korean medicinal plant extracts. Among the plants studied, Euonymus sachalinensis, Rhododendron schlippenbachii, Astilbe chinensis and Juglans regia showed the strongest Į-glucosidase inhibitory activity with IC50YDOXHVRIDQGJ P/UHVSHFWLYHO\,QDGGLWLRQMeliosma oldhamii and Symplocos chinensis showed moderate Į-glucosidase inhibition with IC50YDOXHVRIDQGJP/UHVSHFWLYHO\7KHUHIRUHWKH\ might prove to be a potential natural source for the treatment of metabolic ailments such as, diabetes, and need further investigations.     Studies of fruit and seed characters of selected Euonymus species Bernd Schulz, translated by Wolfgang Bopp Summary Euonymus species are particularly prized for their decorative fruits. This work describes and illustrates (in water colour), the fruits and seeds of 30 commonly cultivated species found in Central European plant collections. The text discusses the criteria for species differentiation. As well as the shape of the fruits and seeds, seed colouration is described and compared to several published accounts in an attempt to correct previous misconceptions. This paper was originally published in German in 2006 (Schulz, 2006a). This translation contains some minor additions and adjustments to the original text and has been translated to the best of our ability, albeit not being a 100% accurate translation. 1 Introduction The German common name of Euonymus europaeus, is “Pfaffenhütchen” which translates as priest’s hat or mitre, in reference to its shape. In past centuries, the wearing of such a hat was a status symbol, showing the belonging to a professional group. Priests in Germany have, since the sixteenth century, been wearing the so-called biretta1,”a stiff and square-shaped head covering as worn by priests, also found in a wider and bigger version“ (Loschek 1993). In Germany today certain clerics wear a very similar head covering, closely resembling the shape of Euonymus europaeus fruits. While I never intended to get as closely involved with this genus, the very attractive nature of the fruits and seeds captivated me, and led me to produce this work. Prior to turning to the fruits of woody broadleaves, I primarily studied the winter buds and twigs of deciduous trees and shrubs (Schulz 1999, 2004, 2006b), a subject which was then little published, apart from the works by Schneider (1903) and Trelease (1931).

Even though the Yongneup wetland protected area is relatively small, various plant species are distributed in the Yongneup wetland protected area because it includes various habitats showing different environmental gradients. Vascular plants distributed in the Yongneup wetland protected area were identified as a total of 376 taxa that is composed of 73 families, 217 genera, 322 species, 3 subspecies, 44 varieties and 7 forms. For endangered plants designated by the Ministry of Environment, 5 species including Trientalis europaea var. arctica, Lilium dauricum, Halenia corniculata, Lychnis wilfordii and Menyanthes trifoliata were found and 34 taxa were confirmed to be distributed only in the mountainous wetland habitats. Regarding naturalized plants, a total of 11 taxa were distributed, but most of them were distributed in the areas where artificial interference has occurred. And in areas inside the wetlands that are relatively well preserved, 2 species of Bidens frondosa and Erigeron annuus were observed.     Williams Ainu Ethnobiology In the last 20 years there has been an increasing focus on study of Ainu culture in Japan, the United States, and in Europe. is has resulted in a number of major exhibitions and publications such as “Ainu, Spirit of a Northern People” published in 1999 by the Ainu Ethnobiology Smithsonian and the University of Washington Press. While such e orts have greatly enhanced our general knowledge of the Ainu, they did not allow for a full understanding of the way in which the Ainu regarded and used plants and animals in their daily life. is study aims at expanding our knowledge of ethnobiology as a central component of Ainu culture. It is based in large part on an analysis of the work of Ainu, Japanese, and Western researchers working in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Ainu Ethnobiology Dai Williams was born in Lincoln, England in 1941. He received a BA in Geography and Anthropology from Oxford University in 1964 and a MA in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1969. He spent the majority of his career in city and regional planning. His cultural research began through museum involvement in the San Francisco Bay Area. Based in Kyoto from 1989, he began research on the production and use of textiles in 19th century rural Japan. His research on the Ainu began in 1997 but primarily took place in Hokkaido between 2005 and 2009. Fieldwork focused on several areas of Hokkaido, like the Saru River Basin and the Shiretoko Peninsula, which the Ainu once occupied.

County Park and its neighboring mountains, located at the boundary between Geochang-gun and Hamyang-gun in Gyeongsangnam-do province in Korea, were surveyed for a total 46 times from April to September of 2011, in July of 2012, and from April of 2015 to August of 2018. The result of this survey revealed 659 taxa composed of 107 families, 346 genera, 583 species, 14 subspecies, 46 varieties and 6 forms. Among them, 25 taxa were endemic plants to Korea, and 18 taxa were rare and endangered plants of Korea. The floristic regional indicator plants including cultivated plants were 5 taxa of grade V, 5 taxa of grade IV, 29 taxa of grade III, 30 taxa of grade II and 38 taxa of grade I. Forty-three taxa of alien plants were found in this area. In addition, 500 taxa out of a total of 649 taxa were categorized by usage into eight groups, including among others an edible group containing 257 taxa, a medicinal group containing 206, a pasturing group containing 220, and an orna- mental group containing 84, with some taxa belonging to more than one group.

Abstract: Daegwallyeong is a mountain pass at an altitude of 832 m, which has been designated a conservation area because of its essential role in Korea’s forest ecosystem. Simultaneously, this area is considered a suitable place for forest grazing due to the cool temperature during the summer. Some areas have been converted to grassland for livestock feeding, and the scale has continued increasing. Although livestock in a forest area is more ecofriendly than industrialized facilities, it could impact the native ecosystem, especially in terms of the flora and vegetation. We investigated the changes in flora and vegetation of Daegwallyeong before and after the grassland formation. The total number of vascular plant species changed throughout the survey period. It was decreased by thinning and forest floor removal in 2015. However, it bounced back to the original number in 2016, even after grazing. However, there was a dramatic decrease after the second forest floor removal and 3 months of grazing in 2017. The number of flora slightly increased after the fallow of grazing in 2019, but it did not fully recover. Although the number of flora seemed back to normal, the composition of the flora in 2019 was significantly changed from the forest without disturbance in 2014.
