  • The History of Redistricting in Georgia
GEORGIA LAW REVIEW(DO NOT DELETE) 11/6/2018 8:33 PM THE HISTORY OF REDISTRICTING IN GEORGIA Charles S. Bullock III* In his memoirs, Chief Justice Earl Warren singled out the redistricting cases as the most significant decisions of his tenure on the Court.1 A review of the changes redistricting introduced in Georgia supports Warren’s assessment. Not only have the obligations to equalize populations across districts and to do so in a racially fair manner transformed the makeup of the state’s collegial bodies, Georgia has provided the setting for multiple cases that have defined the requirements to be met when designing districts. Other than the very first adjustments that occurred in the 1960s, changes in Georgia plans had to secure approval from the federal government pursuant to the Voting Rights Act. Also, the first four decades of the Redistricting Revolution occurred with a Democratic legislature and governor in place. Not surprisingly, the partisans in control of redistricting sought to protect their own and as that became difficult they employed more extreme measures. When in the minority, Republicans had no chance to enact plans on their own. Beginning in the 1980s and peaking a decade later, Republicans joined forces with black Democrats to devise alternatives to the proposals of white Democrats. The biracial, bipartisan coalition never had sufficient numbers to enact its ideas. After striking out in the legislature, African-Americans appealed to the U.S. Attorney General alleging that the plans enacted were less favorable to black interests than alternatives * Charles S. Bullock, III is a University Professor of Public and International Affairs at the University of Georgia where he holds the Richard B.

Atlanta Braves Clippings Thursday, September 10, 2020 Braves.com Braves set NL standard with 29-run outburst Atlanta breaks Modern Era record in National League (since 1900) By Mark Bowman ATLANTA -- Adam Duvall produced his second three-homer game within an eight-day span to help the Braves roll to a record-setting 29-9 win over the Marlins on Wednesday night at Truist Park. Duvall became the first player to record two three-homer games while wearing a Braves uniform, and his efforts helped Atlanta set a National League record for runs in a game in the modern era (since 1900). “That was pretty amazing to be a part of,” Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman said. “I’ve never seen an offense click like that.” The Braves fell just one run short of tying the modern record for runs scored in a game, set when the Rangers defeated the Orioles, 30-3, in the first game of a doubleheader on Aug. 22, 2007, at Camden Yards. Dating back to 1900, no NL club had scored more than 28 runs in a game. The Braves’ franchise record was 23, a mark tallied during the second game of a doubleheader against the Cubs on Sept. 2, 1957. Ronald Acuña Jr. contributed to his three-hit night with a three-run home run to cap a six-run fifth. But it was his bases-loaded double in the sixth inning that gave the Braves a new franchise record for runs in a single game, opening a 25-8 lead. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Atlanta became the first MLB team to score at least 22 runs through the first five innings since the Blue Jays (24 runs) in a win over the Orioles on June 26, 1978.

  • From the Vaults, February 2017
FROM The VAULTS Newsletter of the Georgia Archives www.GeorgiaArchives.org Volume 2, No. 1 February 2017 The Georgia Archives Building State Historian and Archives Director Louise Hays thought that the Georgia Archives would be preparing to move to a new building on the Capitol Square with the State Library and perhaps the Supreme Court as soon as World War II was over. It took another twenty years, a new State Archivist (Mary Givens Bryan), and a new Secretary of State (Ben W. Fortson, Jr.) to complete the white marble structure on Capitol Avenue. The Archives had moved from the fourth floor of the Capitol in 1929 and 1930 to the twenty-room mansion donated by the heirs of furniture magnate Amos G. Rhodes at 1516 Peachtree Street NW. From the beginning it was obvious that a fireproof building designed as an archives would be preferable to Rhodes Hall. Governor Lamartine Griffin Hardman in 1931 proposed carving a giant records storage facility into the core of Stone Mountain. Continued on page 8 Volume 2, No. 1 FROM THE VAULTS Page 2 News From Friends of Georgia Archives Update from the President Welcome to Spring in Georgia and at the Georgia Archives! Our graduates attend some of the country’s most prestigious colleges, and this year we have our first student heading to an Ivy League college in the fall. It is humbling to think of how far this school has come in just six years.
