General Overview Development partners are insisting on the full implementation of the Waki and Kriegler reports to facilitate further development and put an end to impunity. Twenty-five diplomatic missions in Nairobi, including the US, Canada and the European Union countries have piled pressure for the implementation of the report whose key recommendations was the setting up of a special tribunal to try the financiers, perpetrators and instigators of the violence that rocked the country at the beginning of this year. The European Union has threatened aid sanctions should the Waki Report not be implemented. An opinion poll by Strategic Research Limited found that 55.8 per cent of respondents supported the full implementation of the report on post-lection violence. On 19 November, Parliament moved to chart the path of implementing the Waki Report by forming two committees to provide leadership on the controversial findings. -

Ruhakana Soil and Water Management Research Program Rwanda Agriculture Board, Huye, Rwanda [email protected] Abstract: Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) were proved as new technology to intervene in monitoring, managing and protecting environmental resources among others lake and water reservoir are mostly anxious resources. The objective of the study was to estimate the surface area change of the lake Naivasha using RS, GIS techniques and hydrological modeling for the lake water balance. Landat images Thematic Mapper/Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (TM/ETM+) taken respectively in the same month of January 1986; 1995; 2003 and 2010 were the input data used to assess the different changes of the lake area on one hand. on other hand the spread sheet data set helped to build the hydrological model to estimate the long term lake Level fluctuation, the rainfall versus evaporation as in flow and out flow from the lake. The lake volume showed the dynamic of ground water to simulate the long-term fluctuation of the lake level. The lake area changes from the model were calculated from the spread sheet input data from 1986 to 2003 while the lake area changes from the Landsat images were calculated from 1986 to 2010. The comparative results from the area lake changes both from Landsat images and hydrological model confirmed the correlation results, 45.72 Km2 or 32.03 % in 2010 for the Landsat while the hydrological model estimated to 12km2 or 8% area reduction in 2003. -

Geologists FOREWORD Previous to the undertaking of modern geological surveys the Naivasha area, in the south-central part of Kenya Rift Valley, was probably the best known part of the Colony from the geological point of view. This resulted partly from ease of access, as from the earliest days the area was crossed by commonly used routes of com munication, and partly from the presence of lakes, which in Pleistocene times were much larger and made the country an ideal habitat for Prehistoric Man and animals that have left their traces behind them in the beds that were then deposited. -

NOTES ON THE HYDROLOGY OF LAKE NAIV ASHA .• By H. L. SIKES, C.B.E., B.A., B.E., M.INST.C.E., F.G.S. The hydrological features of Lake Naivashaare not only of scientific interest but are also of some economic importance. A record of tpe fluctuations of lake level has been maintained with four short breaks since tpe end of 19oB, readings being taken weekly. A b.athy• metrical survey was carried out in 1927 with sufficient precision to enable the volume of water and the area of the lake to be c~culated approximately as the level varies. Evaporation meter readings were started in 1917, but, in the case of those prior to 1920, the method adopted is not regarded as sufficiently reliable to be of value; the records are incomplete for the years 1927 and 1928, but complete records exist for 14 years. The number of rain gauges in the drainage area of the lake, 1,203 square miles, is still regrettably small. Only six pave been established and of these the longest record is·from 1904·' However, a number of gauges outside the drainage area, under climatic conditions which appear to correspond fairly well with one or other pIlrt of the drainage area, provide useful data for co-ordination and check. With the help of these a reasonably accurate knowledge of the rainfall on the drainage or catchment area and on Lake Naivasha itself is thougpt to have been achieved, though, in the case of a region where much of the rainfall is of the instability type, precision is im• possible of attainment. -

Nakuru Countywide Strategic Sanitation Plan Countywide Inclusive Sanitation Strategy March 2019 Foreword Nakuru County is one of the counties in Kenya with fast growing populations, urban centres and robust economies. This growth continues to exert pressure on our already overstretched social infrastructure and services such as water, housing, sanitation and healthcare. It is worth noting that only 29.7 percent and 21 percent of the urban and rural populations respectively use improved sanitation facilities, with sewerage coverage estimated at a measly 3.4 percent. A significant proportion of the population in Nakuru County estimated at about 1.8 percent still defecates in the open. This situation is exacerbated by inadequate water supply, limited solid waste management and drai- nage management systems especially in the low income, informal and unplanned urban settlements. The conse- quence of these shocking statistics is reflected in the poor health status of our people and our degraded environment. Unfortunately water and sanitation related diseases such as diarrhea and cholera continue to pose a great challenge to the county. It is estimated that Nakuru county loses about KES 978 million per year due to poor sanitation. The County Government of Nakuru is taking these challenges very seriously. With the support of the National Government, through the Ministries of Water & Sanitation, Health, the World Bank and other stakeholders, we have embarked on an elaborate process of developing a comprehensive Countywide Inclusive Sanitation Strategy and Investment Plan to address these sanitation challenges in the county. The overall objective of the Nakuru Countywide Inclusive Sanitation Strategy and Investment Plan is to provide direction for the county to achieve its vision of providing universal access to safe and sutainable sanitation to the entire county population by 2030. -

Net $8-t6B8 4 COLONIAL REPORTS—ANNUAL In 1848 Rebman first saw Kilimanjaro, and the following year Xfrapf first saw the snows of Kenya. Further exploration was directed to the discovery of the sources of the Nile. Speke first saw the Victoria Nyanza in 1858, and discovered its outlet at the Ripon Falls in 1863. Later in the same year Samuel Baker dis covered the Albert Nyanza, and in 1888 Count Teleki von Szek discovered Lake Rudolf. In 1887 Seyyid Bargash, the Sultan of Zanzibar, granted a concession on the mainland between the Umba and Tana Rivers to the British East African Association which was incorporated under Royal Charter as the Imperial British East Africa Company in the following year. The early activities of the British East Africa Company were concentrated mainly on the coast. In 1880 a considerable caravan was despatched to explore the interior under F. J. Jackson, who established a station at Machakos, and proceeded by way of Kikuyu, Naivasha, and Sotik to Mumias.
