Joe Shithead Keithley’s comments "I really wanted people to see the original version of D.O.A. performing. You know, the completely raw band that went out and made a mark in this world. So I gathered together some of the best footage I could find and came up with Smash The State. Most of the footage is taken from shows in San Francisco and the East Bay. This makes a lot of sense, as San Francisco became D.O.A.'s home away from in the late seventies and in the eighties. Our very 1st show outside of Vancouver was in S.F. I took a train, Biscuits and Rampage took a bus and Brad Kent hitch hiked. when we arrived we had to scramble around to find enough gear to play. But it was great, so from that point on, it just took a phone call like "Hey, can D.O.A. play a show with the Avengers and the Dead Kennedys next week?" Of course we fucking can! So we would hop in any kind of old wrecked vehicle we could find, and head down to the Bay area and help cause a punk rock riot. The last part of the DVD is our 5th show ever. It was an anarchist gathering in Vancouver's Stanley Park on Canada Day in 1978. It was billed as "Anti-Canada Day". We didn't have a permit, so the cops tried to stop D.O.A., The Subhumans and Private School from playing that day. Our pal Phil Smith managed to talk a local church group, that was having a picnic that day into lending us their park permit once the church picnic was over.

  • Richard Peterson and the Art of a Warrior Tribe March 23Rd - April 21St, 2012
Richard Peterson and the Art of a Warrior Tribe March 23rd - April 21st, 2012 By curator Adam Lerner, Director and Chief Animator MCA Denver Richard Peterson’s photographs from the Search & Destroy years capture the habitat that nurtured the brief existence of a tribe. He is interested in much more than rockers on a stage. He captures the scene, the world that surrounds the musicians, with an eye to what made it enchanting. Some of Peterson’s images look very punk, giving us a taste of the theatricality that we folks who weren’t there have come to expect from the movement. When he shows us Iggy Pop on stage, eyes bulging, we get the feeling of seeing the highest level of intensity a human can muster. When he shows us the screaming face of Tomata du Plenty of the Screamers we feel the raw energy of punk. In part, it is a world populated by people willing to make themselves look outrageous, if not ridiculous. It includes promoter Dirk Dirkson at his desk wearing money on his face and Mark Mothersbaugh in a crib with a mask over his head. Peterson is drawn to people doing something different. But Peterson doesn’t just present the scene at its most expressive moments. He doesn’t present the scene as the world expects it. Some of his characters look downright professorial. There are people in collared shirts and blazers. His photograph of Dix Denney of the Weirdos, smiling with a cigar is his mouth, is simply sweet. He also portrays introspective, tender and human elements.

  • This Is Always a Hard Thing to Start, Writing a Eulogy About a Fallen Comrade Who Has Now Left This World, but It’S My Duty and Honour to Tell You About Randy Rampage
This is always a hard thing to start, writing a eulogy about a fallen comrade who has now left this world, but it’s my duty and honour to tell you about Randy Rampage. We set out to conquer the world together, we didn’t quite do it, but at times we thought we came close. Randy was unique, like a super nova, burning red hot. This is what I remember about my friend. I had just come back from Toronto in February of ’78, my first punk rock band The Skulls had moved to Toronto in the hopes of being successful, it never happened and we broke up. So when I got back home in Vancouver I wanted to start a new band, so I put an ad in the Georgia Straight weekly, “Looking for a drummer and a bassist for punk rock band. Wimps should not apply.” Soon I started getting a few phone calls about the band. One of the first calls was from a guy named Randy Archibald, he said he was a drummer in a band called Looney Tunes (taken from the Alice Cooper song I suppose). He came over to audition and he wasn’t bad, one thing, he was a lefty, so he could play the hi-hats open handed or cross handed. Growing up as a drummer myself I thought that was cool, Randy also sensed how to play it cool while trying out, not bad for a 17 year old. Not long after that, I got word that Chuck Montgomery, who was the little brother of Dimwit (drummer of The Skulls) wanted to try out.

Abstract When Nirvana found sudden commercial success with the song “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in 1991, the music industry’s attention became focused on Seattle for the first time. The city, however, had a rich musical tradition going back decades. This thesis examines the rise and fall of music communities in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest from the 1950s to the 1990s: the jazz mileu in Seattle in the 1950s, the Pacific Northwest garage rock network of the 1960s, and the alternative music community of the 1980s and early 1990s.

We Are the One: Subcultural Politics and Leisure in Early San Francisco Punk 1 We Are the One: Subcultural Politics and Leisure in Early San Francisco Punk Michael Stewart Foley AUTHOR'S NOTE The author is grateful for the valuable research assistance of Marijn Rombouts, who provided critical help at various stages in advancing this paper toward publication. 1 In 1977, the year that punk became a global sensation, Penelope Houston, lead singer of the Avengers, wrote the lyrics to what became the singular anthem of the San Francisco punk scene. In the first verse to “We Are the One,” she captured both the power and exhilaration of the city’s youthful rebel culture: We are the leaders of tomorrow We are the ones to have the fun We want control, we want the power Not going to stop until it’s done! (The Avengers 1977) 2 With its aggressive drum attack and slashing guitar riffs, “We Are the One” seemed capable of sparking not only frenzied pogo dancing, but also a rush to the barricades.
