Fassbinder and European Cinema Wed 23 Sep – Fri 4 Dec 2015 FASSBINDER AND EUROPEAN CINEMA WED 23 SEP – FRI 4 DEC 2015 Rainer Werner Fassbinder ‘Katzelmacher’ Much has been written about Rainer Werner Fassbinder this year. 2015 would have seen him turn 70, but instead this icon of the New German Cinema movement died aged only 37. The year of his death - 1982 - signified the end of an era, yet not the end of Fassbinder’s enduring influence on filmmakers across the world. This film series at the Goethe-Institut London takes an eclectic look at Fassbinder’s legacy in European cinema. The pairing of five Fassbinder classics with films by directors from France, Greece, Hungary, Portugal and the UK is an invitation to discover thematic or formal affinities but also differences and transformations. From the shared sense of alienation in Fassbinder’s Katzelmacher and Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Attenberg to the highly stylised worlds inhabited exclusively by women in The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant and Peter Strickland’s The Duke of Burgundy, the series covers a breadth of themes and human conditions - the most difficult of which Fassbinder was able to capture in his uniquely intrepid way. • Problematizar a Realidade Programa 7 Press Eng
Press-release I 18.02.2019 Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss (1982) PROGRAMME 7 27.03.2019 | 18h30 Goethe-Institut, Auditorium, Campo Mártires da Pátria 37, 1169-016 Lisbon, Portugal Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss (Veronika Voss, 1982, 104 Min.) by Rainer Werner Fassbinder Discussion: Judith Barry, Giovanbattista Tusa Artworks, especially those that comprise documentary material, can offer a particularly challenging appeal to our thoughts about reality. While their indexical link to the reality they address grants images and sounds a specific credibility, the position of the artist, her aesthetic, thematic and political choices and self-reflexive stance, may generate a critical assessment of the very constitution of reality. At such a point, art meets philosophy. In order to reflect on the relationship between the factual world and its subjective appropriation, questioning hegemonic claims to objectivity and problematising the inherent contradictions of society are inherently philosophical issues. Problematising reality – Encounters between art, cinema and philosophy is a series of screenings and discussions, in a partnership between IFILNOVA (CineLab) / FCSH / UNL, Goethe-Institut and Maumaus / Lumiar Cité and in collaboration with Apordoc / Doc’s Kingdom. These encounters between artists and researchers of international renown focus on the very moments where art, cinema and philosophy enter into a productive dialogue. The seventh and last edition of this series of conversations and screenings brings together the New York-based artist Judith Barry and the philosopher Giovanbattista Tusa, who will discuss Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s feature film Veronika Voss (Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss, 1982), the third episode of Fassbinder’s trilogy on Post-War West Germany, following after The Marriage of Maria Braun (1978) and Lola (1981).

The full depth and scope of this astonishing career—unparalleled in postwar world cinema—will be on display for the first time in the United States beginning January 23, 1997, when The Museum of Modern Art presents Rainer Werner Fassbinder, a complete retrospective of the director's work. Using a potent mix of impassioned melodrama and biting satire, working independently with a loyal, likeminded cast and crew, and wedding intense personal and political issues, Fassbinder produced an entirely original oeuvre that remains as imaginative and incisive today as when he was alive. Black Voices, German Rebels: Acts of Masculinity in Postwar Popular Culture By Priscilla Dionne Layne A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in German and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Deniz Göktürk, Chair Professor Anton Kaes Professor Jocelyne Guilbault Spring 2011 Abstract Black Voices, German Rebels: Acts of Masculinity in Postwar Popular Culture by Priscilla Dionne Layne Doctor of Philosophy in German and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Deniz Göktürk, Chair This dissertation examines practices of embodying Black popular culture in Germany. My analysis is based on close readings of texts from a variety of media including novels, films and musical theater from West and East Germany of the 1950s to the reunified Germany of the 1990s. Black popular culture, particularly popular music, has appealed to Germans since the 19th century, when the Fisk Jubilee singers toured Europe. In most of my analyses, music plays a prominent role as a gateway to Black popular culture. Stuart Hall defines Black popular culture as a product of the African Diaspora, therefore it is produced in a space populated by people who are linked to many different geographic locales. Nevertheless, in the texts I examine, the African American contribution to this culture is given precedent. This preference for African American culture is based on an articulation of factors, including the large presence of African American GIs in occupied postwar Germany and German stereotypes that designate African Americans as both primitive and modern, oppressed victims yet also producers of incredibly different, liberating styles.
