Introdução e objetivos Esta pesquisa, que dá continuidade ao trabalho desenvolvido no período 2013.2- 2014.1, busca mapear e analisar adaptações das peças de William Shakespeare para jovens e neoleitores sob forma de quadrinhos e romances em prosa. Para fins deste estudo, o conceito de adaptação empregado é o de Julie Sanders (2006, p. 18-19), que assim resume suas definições: (i) transposição de um gênero para outro (como da literatura para o cinema, ou do teatro para a ficção em prosa); (ii) intervenção nos textos por meio de cortes e omissões (similar à editoração), acréscimos, expansões ou interpolações (que podem, inclusive, ser sob a forma de comentário, dando voz aos silenciados no texto de origem ou explicitando razões hipotéticas para as ações dos personagens); (iii) tentativa de tornar os textos “relevantes” ou facilmente compreensíveis para novos leitores e espectadores por meio de aproximações e atualizações (motivação de inúmeras adaptações dos chamados “clássicos” para a televisão e o cinema). A definição de público jovem é a da editora Galera Record, que estipula duas faixas dentro do segmento: (i) público juvenil: leitores entre 10 e 14 anos; (ii) público jovem adulto: leitores com mais de 14 anos. As adaptações em mangá são voltadas para a segunda faixa. Além disso, trabalhamos com o conceito de neoleitores de Tiepolo (2009, p.126), público alvo de algumas adaptações de Shakespeare sob forma de romances em prosa: jovens – além de adultos e idosos também –, com variados níveis de escolarização, iniciando-se na prática de leitura. -

Building on the artist’s expertise at adapting great works of literature to the comic book format, the collection of retooled iconic covers uses Trump’s bombastic quotes cast against fantastic scenes to satirize the U.S. president and his policies. With this explicitly political project, Sikoryak joins the ranks of other cartoonists who have turned their pen into a weapon against the billionaire reality-TV host-turned-leader of the free world, from Stephen Byrne’s ‘Trump Rally’ to Pia Guerra’s Bannon-Trump ‘Big Boy’ to the feminist anthology ‘Resist’. Introduction Launched in 2007 by East Press, Manga de Dokuha( “reading through with manga”) series involves a variety of world literary classics, political works and religious books, in which Shakespeare’s works, King Lear( 2008), The Merchant of Venice( 2009), Macbeth( 2009), and Hamlet( 2011) are included. Since the series covers a wide-range of controversial political issues, its publication aroused much attention from the media. Typically, the comic version of Karl Marx’s Das Kapital became a subject of great topical interest in the media even before its publication. The Independent forecast that the comic version was“ expected to be a bestseller” while The Japan Times claimed that“ Karl Marx is finding a new audience among Japanese comic book fans.¹” Moreover, The Independent also mentioned other titles included in the series, such as Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace, 2 Dante’s Divine Comedy, Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf, and Shakespeare’s King Lear . Obviously, this series has attracted international attention due to the global impact of manga“ from being a quick style of comics to being the new comic-book art format” (Johnson-Woods 1). In an article titled“ Novels under Manga Cover: Convenience Stores Go Literary,” the report of Yomiuri Shinbun mentioned that the 17 titles of Manga 3 de Dokuha had sold 900,000 copies in the year after publication . -

THE SIKORYAK PERSPECTIVE – INTERVIEWS WITH A GRAPHIC ILLUSTRATOR OF NOTE CAMILLA BAASCH ANDERSEN* I INTRODUCTION The following is a selection of transcripts from a long-distance interview of Robert Sikoryak,1 delivered for the Comic Contracting Conference, in Dec 2017 at UWA. It is divided into six segments: 1. Introduction by Prof Andersen 2. Question One 3. Question Two 4. Question Three 5. Live Interview transcript 6. Conclusions from Prof Andersen This unusual format will require some context. R. Sikoryak is an illustrator and an author. He’s not a lawyer, he’s not a regulator and he’s never been in that space and I confess although I’m a big fan of comic books I’ve never heard of him until about six or seven months when he released this amazing novel called ‘Terms and Conditions’ which is really, really interesting. With this book, Robert did something astonishing in the eyes of legal simplifiers and designers. He may not have intended it, but he did. In essence, he took the extremely tedious 20,669 words of the iTunes terms and conditions (which are some of the most well- known AND never read end-user licence agreements in the world!) and he turned them into speech bubbles in a graphic novel that’s divided into different imaginary parts. There are no other words in that book except for the ones that come from the iTunes terms and conditions. They are in sequence, and he’s made it fit into four chapters of interwoven stories with people all dressed like Steve Jobs. -

Cartoon Contracts and the Proactive Visualization of Law Michael D. Murray 16 U. MASS. L. REV. 98 ABSTRACT Contracts have always relied on text first, foremost, and usually exclusively. Yet, this approach leaves many users of contracts in the dark as to the actual meaning of the transactional documents and instruments they enter into. The average contract routinely uses language that only lawyers, law-trained readers, and highly literate persons can truly understand. There is a movement in the law in the United States and many other nations called the visualization of law movement that attempts to bridge these gaps in contractual communication by using highly visual instruments. In appropriate circumstances, even cartoons and comic book forms of sequential narrative have been used to communicate contract terms to all parties, but particularly to contractors who are illiterate or less- than-fully literate in the language of the instrument. -

The Narratology of Comic Art
The Narratology of Comic Art By placing comics in a lively dialogue with contemporary narrative theory, The Narratology of Comic Art builds a systematic theory of narrative comics, going beyond the typical focus on the Anglophone tra dition. This involves not just the exploration of those properties in com ics that can be meaningfully investigated with existing narrative theory, but an interpretive study of the potential in narratological concepts and analytical procedures that has hitherto been overlooked as well. This research monograph is, then, not an application of narratology in the medium and art of comics, but a revision of narratological concepts and approaches through the study of narrative comics. Thus, while narrato logy is brought to bear on comics, equally comics are brought to bear on narratology.
