As the war in the Western and Eastern Front quickly evolves into battles at the trenches, the British seek alternative plans against the deadlock, making use of their superiority at sea. Turkey opts to follow the Central Powers, so Churchill’s plan for military operations in the Dar - danelles Straits is chosen, in order to threaten Constantinople and to secure Russia’s maritime Η εκστρατεία στα passage to the Mediterranean. The Greek king Constantine I insists strongly on ∆αρδανέλλια his country’s neutrality, but the Prime Minister E. Έχει πια διαφανεί ότι οι ναυτικές επιχειρήσεις πρέπει να συνδυαστούν µε αποβατικές ενέργειες στη χερσό - νησο της Καλλίπολης. On 19 February 1915, the Allied warships bomb the forts that dominate the entrance of the Dardanelles; and on the 25th, they pull down their fortifications. A new naval attack on 18 March in order to neu - tralize the enemy artillery and sea mines in the Strait would result in the loss of three Allied warships. It now appears that the naval operations should be combined with landing actions in the Gallipoli Peninsula. General Sir Ian Hamilton is appointed head of the land forces and his task is to reorganize the Mediter - ranean Expeditionary Force in Egypt and improve the infrastructure of Lemnos, in just one month. “Lemnos was the main base for Allied opera- tions at the Gallipoli peninsula” Φωτογραφίες από τη συλλογή Θ. Παπαδόπουλου “Η Μάχη της Καλλίπολης ήταν η µεγαλύτερη αποβατική επιχείρηση του 1ου Παγκοσµίου Πολέµου” Landing Plan To support the naval operations, two British divisions are allocated, comprising of a Canadian regiment, two Australian and New Zealand divisions (which in - clude an Indian brigade) and two French divisions, which also drafted Algerians, Senegalese and Foreign Legion men. On 25 April 1915, the landing begins at six points on the south side of Gallipoli with a simultaneous attack on the Asian side of the Straits and a di - versionary operation. The lack of coordination and capable leadership, the limited number of landing crafts, the landing in inaccessible places and the enemy’s strong resistance generated Σχέδιο heavy losses and minimal gains to the allied troops. Constant raids and counterattacks throughout August caused thousands of απόβασης new casualties between the two rivals.

  • Wojahn Blackbird Commentary
“On Hearing That My Poems Were Being Studied in a Distant Place”: Thoughts on Distance, Difficulty, and Secret Addressees By David Wojahn Published in Blackbird: An Online Journal of Literature and the Arts Spring 2016, Vol. 15 No. 1 So-called “public intellectuals” tend not to have exceptionally long afterlives. We have heard their names—the likes of H.L. Mencken, Margaret Mead, Mary McCarthy, Lionel Trilling, and Edmund Wilson—but all have become footnotes in our cultural history. Also on the verge of cultural oblivion is the most telegenic and popular public intellectual of the late twentieth century, astronomer and astrophysicist Carl Sagan. His many books were bestsellers; he was a regular guest on Johnny Carson; Cosmos, the PBS series which he developed, coproduced, and moderated, was an immense success when first broadcast in 1980. And, last but not least, his highly idiosyncratic speaking voice—haunting but oddly nasal and prone to doing downright weird things with vowels—was as unmistakable as it was widely lampooned. As with Bob Dylan, once you heard that voice you would never get it out of your head. But Sagan’s voice has outlasted his reputation. Since his death in 1996, a foundation has been named after him, and many of his books remain in print, but Sagan seems, even to those who know him, a relic of the 1970s and early ’80s—he’s down in the cultural junk drawer with the Walkman, the shoulder pads, the big hair, Cyndi Lauper, and the presidency of Ronald Reagan. Yet one of Sagan’s projects has a certain loopy relevance to the topic I will discuss tonight.

  • Terrestrial Herpetofauna of Limnos and Agios Efstratios (Northern Aegean, Greece)
Herpetology Notes, volume 9: 237-248 (2016) (published online on 25 October 2016) Terrestrial herpetofauna of Limnos and Agios Efstratios (Northern Aegean, Greece), including new species records for Malpolon insignitus (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1827) and Pelobates syriacus Boettger, 1889 Ilias Strachinis1,* and Stephanos A. Roussos2 Abstract. We present herpetofaunal observations from Limnos and Agios Efstratios, two Asia Minor continental shelf islands in the Aegean Sea. Comprehensive surveys over 88 days in total on Limnos, over a period of nine years, consisted mainly of visual encounter surveys and road cruised observations, revealed the presence of three species of amphibians and twelve species of reptiles, including two new species records for the island (Malpolon insignitus and Pelobates syriacus). Thorough transect type surveys over four consecutive days on Agios Efstratios revealed the presence of six species of reptiles, yet no amphibians. Terrapin (Emys orbicularis) populations on Limnos seem to have either gone extinct or declined in numbers over the last few years due to wetland habitat alteration by heavy machinery, which is the likely cause of mortality and displacement. This is a serious conservation concern and an indicator of declining wetland habitat health. The results of these surveys provide a clearer understanding of the extant herpetofauna on Limnos and Agios Efstratios and offer discussion on natural history, possible erroneous historical records and preliminary ecological understanding of the herpetofaunal assemblages residing on these islands. Keywords: Herpetological survey, reptiles, amphibians, new record, Greek islands, Aegean, Limnos, species list, Prefecture of Lesvos Introduction than now, the two islands, together with Goekceada (Imbros) and Bozcaada (Tenedos), were connected Limnos and Agios Efstratios are two Greek islands to Asia Minor (Perissoratis and Conispoliatis, 2003).

Thewalt@chemie. uni-ulm. de Abstract The present study describes the geology and mineralogy of the main petrified wood occurrences in Evros-Rhodopi and Limnos and integrates them in a volcanic- hydro thermal framework taking into consideration the nature of hydrothermal solu tions during the silicification process. In the Lykofi-Fylakto-Lefkymi area, quartz and opal-CT are the main silica polymorph within the wood. The hostrocL· exhibit a zeolitic alteration suggesting reduced and slightly alkaline fluids for the silicifica tion of wood. At Kassiteres/Sappes area the presence ofsilicified wood within kao- linite±alunite altered tuffbreccias indicates that slight acidic fluids were involved in the silicification processes. In Limnos Island the fossiliferous Portianou, Varos- Roussopouli and Moudros-Roussopouli areas occur in the periphery of an eroded volcanic edifice exposed at Fakos peninsula. The silicified wood occurs: (a) within weakly altered pyroclastics and (b) associated to several horizons of sinters inter- bedded within the pyroclastics.

  • Lemno Dai ‘Tirreni’ Agli Ateniesi
SIA ANNUARIO Volume LXXXVIII Serie III, 10 - 2010 LEMNO DAI ‘TIRRENI’ AGLI ATENIESI SCUOLA ARCHEOLOGICA ITALIANA DI ATENE LEMNO: DAI ‘TIRRENI’ AGLI ATENIESI.
