Autumn Joy sedum Sedum spectabile is an easy-to-grow succulent that will thrive in most any soil. The soil can range anywhere from alkaline to acidic. Autumn Joy is not very choosy. It will grow in partial shade but does best in full sun. Water your sedum once a week for the first month after it is planted. After it is established, water only Autumn Glory: The New Horse the soil is completely dry. Autumn Joy is fairly drought-tolerant. If overwatered, the stems will become waterlogged and rot. Fertilize minimally or not at all. If your plants have suffered through a particularly long dry season or are planted in extremely poor soil, use a very Autumn Glory: The New Horse dose of slow- release general fertilizer. Propagate your sedum by "window rooting. Within the next month, each leaf node will produce a shoot that can be removed and rooted. During the summer, you can simply snip off a 2- to 3-inch tip from the plant and stick it directly in the soil. Water well, and let it root on its own. Like all sedums, autumn joy is a succulent and will tolerate drought. It requires full sun and well-drained soil. The soil should not be too rich, or the stems will collapse once the plant blooms. Early spring is the best time for division. Autumn joy works well in the flower border and is attractive to butterflies and bees. It pairs well with grasses, black-eyed Susans and other autumn bloomers such as asters and chrysanthemums. Sedums actually do better being somewhat neglected. Too much water or fertilizer can cause their stems to flop. Autumn joy is attractive from spring until fall. If stems go uncut, it is decorative in the winter.     Evaluating the experience of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the career histories of elite equestrian athletes By Donna de Haan A Doctoral Thesis Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy of Loughborough University March 2015 © D. de Haan 2015 ABSTRACT Equestrian sport has been present on the Modern Olympic programme since 1900 with Para-Equestrian Dressage making its debut at the 1996 Paralympic Games. Due to the combined governance of Olympic and Paralympic versions of the sport, the mixed gender of competition and the potential age range of competitors, equestrian sport provides an opportunity through which to understand a unique context of athlete experience. This thesis has sought to identify and evaluate athlete experience within the context of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and to place this experience within the wider career histories of members of the British Equestrian Team. This study utilised a combination of a systematic literature review methodology and ethnographic data collection and analysis with a critical realist approach, creating a framework that values interpretive insights into how the subjects perceive and construct their world whilst at the same time considering ways in which the literature and individual subjects identify, comment on, and frame the reality of the world of equestrian sport. This study has resulted in the emergence of six themes pertaining to experiencing the games; equestrian sporting culture, identity, values, challenges, performance support and success. Results show many similarities and shared experiences for both the Olympic and Paralympic equestrian athletes. The differences regarding the lived experience for these athletes are predominantly associated with the development of the sport, the relative short Paralympic history of equestrian sport in comparison to the Olympic disciplines, and the place of the Games in the context of the riders’ career histories.

Hodgins School of Psychology, Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, NSW 2678, Australia; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Simple Summary: Forming relationships with horses is commonly understood as an important part of amateur and elite equestrian sports. Horse-human relationships have historically been romanticized and the success of sporting horse-human combinations has been attributed to a close relationship between horse and rider. Elite equestrian sports differ from amateur equestrian sports, especially where an elite rider earns their primary income from riding and competing horses, and third-party sponsors and owners are financially invested in a horse-rider combination. In this study, 36 elite equestrian athletes were interviewed about their interspecies relationships. Results indicated that a strong horse-rider relationship could, in some instances, inhibit a rider’s ability to compete successfully and engage in a commercialized sporting context, due to tensions between an instrumental approach to animals and meaningful horse-rider interaction. Results also suggested that horse-rider relationships may be peripheral to performance outcomes, or conversely, essential to performance success. The relationship between sporting outcomes and the horse-rider relationship in an elite setting is clearly complex and multifaceted. An increase in transient, instrumental horse-rider relationships may be resulting in a shift towards a commercial, detached model of relating to horses, raising ethical questions around the professionalization of equestrianism and the management of Citation: Hogg, R.C.; Hodgins, G.A. competition horses.

The Fédération Equestre Internationale (International Equestrian Federation – FEI), the world's Governing body of equestrian sports, has designated the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, Presented by Land Rover, part of the FEI Classics™, as a Four Star Eventing competition. Stars are used by the FEI to denote the level of Eventing competitions. Four stars is the highest designation and this designation is given only to the Olympic Games, World Championships, and six annual events around the world.
