COMMUNITY PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear residents of Greater Fulton, In case you haven’t noticed yet, the Civic Association name and logo have had an update since our last issue. On the front cover, you’ll see what I mean. The word “Hill” in our association name has been dropped in favor of the all-inclusive name “Greater Fulton.” Or perhaps you didn’t notice and that’s even better. Many of us have been referring to ourselves as Greater Fulton since the Greater Fulton’s Future initiative several years ago. We are three areas: Fulton, Fulton Hill, and Montrose Heights, but together we are the Greater Fulton community. The fact that this has been a gradual progression is exciting evidence that this name change has been a grass-roots transition. It’s come from us as a community. That is something we can celebrate. Rosa Coleman Appreciatively, Rosa D. Coleman

“WHO” is NRCFulton? In the children’s book “Horton Hears a Who,” authored by Dr. Seuss, Horton finds a microscopic community of creatures floating away on a speck of dust. Horton helps relocate the community for safe keeping, placing it on a flower most often associated with luck: the clover. But the clover provided only a temporary solution. Without a more suitable habitat, the community – barely visible to even those who were nearby – would need more than mere luck to survive. Horton offers his help. As the saying goes, “seeing is believing,” and despite the fact that a close look would have revealed that a wonderful community did indeed exist, Horton was met with disbelief- -even by his closest friends. Only when the community yells out in unison is enough volume created for Horton’s friends to believe. NRCFulton (also known as the Neighborhood Resource Center) is just like the community in Horton Hears a Who. Fortunately, we have already found our Horton – you. Thanks to you, we have already found a suitable habitat. Stone Brewery Advisory Council The Greater Fulton – Stone Brewing Advisory Council was formed in 2015 as a result of Stone Brewing beginning construction in the Greater Fulton community. The group met monthly for one year during construction of the brewery. Several work groups were formed to focus on different aspects of the construction, such as access to roads, service interruptions, and physical changes to the neighborhood. The Advisory Council stopped meeting in 2016 once construction was complete. Operations continue, however, and construction on the Stone World Bistro and Gardens will start at the end of 2017. The Advisory Council is a valuable resource for the community to learn about Stone Brewing and for the company to learn about what the concerns and ideas of the community. If you are interested in reactivating the Advisory Council, please let Cheryl Groce-Wright at the Neighborhood Resource Center know. Cheryl can be reached at 864-5797 or [email protected]

Brewery crews from Triple Crossing and Stone breweries Fulton Rising – a collaboration to benefit the Neighborhood Resource Center Giving back is one of the characteristics of craft brewers, and Stone Brewing and Triple Crossing Brewing are joining forces with the Neighborhood Resource Center to create Fulton Rising, a double IPA made right here in Greater Fulton. The beer was released on March 25th and proceeds from the sale of Fulton Rising will benefit the Neighborhood Resource Center. It will be available on draft and in cans to take home at Triple Crossing Brewing’s Hatcher Street brewery and brewpub. Triple Crossing Brewing came to Greater Fulton in 2016, expanding from their downtown location to their brewpub and brewery on Hatcher Street across from SB Cox. Known for their fresh IPAs, Triple Crossing also offers a brewpub and tasting room where patrons can order wood-fired pizzas and sample locally-crafted beers. Stone Brewing opened its doors in the Rocketts section of Greater Fulton in February 2016 after about a year of construction and makes a variety of craft beers that are distributed east of the Rocky Mountains. Who knows, Fulton Rising Double IPA might be just the first in a series of collaborations between the community and the neighborhood breweries.

11 GILLIES CREEK PARK Goats in Gillies Creek Park Please welcome Elizabeth and Sweetie Pie to Gillies Creek Park. These small goats have been invited to help get control over the kudzu in the park. They will be having lunch in the park when the weather is good, Monday through Friday during the daylight hours. These goats live in the county, but they like to eat kudzu, and we expect to have a lot of that for them. While the area looks bleak now, the goats like to eat almost anything. Their diet is supplemented as needed and they have plenty of water. In case you are wondering, they are friendly. If you would like to help Elizabeth and Sweetie Pie clean up the park, please contact Carl Otto at 804-226-4366. GILLIES CREEK PARK DIRT PILE If you have noticed the large pile of dirt next to the BMX track in Gillies Creek Park, there is a good reason for it to be there. The dirt is to be used to make a junior version of the Richmond Jumps Course in the area nearby. The advanced jumps course has been in this area for years. The Gillies Creek Park course has recently been officially included in the Richmond parks system of trails. Because the course is too difficult for new riders, the plan is to build a beginner course. Because almost all of the work for both courses is done by volunteers, there is no exact schedule for when the junior course will officially open. However, there is a plan and many willing hands, and it should be completed by this fall. Details will be posted on the nearby bulletin board as they become available.
