School District 72 • Campbell River, BC G Suite for Education Parent Information and Consent

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Our students are citizens of a digital world. Technology provides opportunities to stretch thinking, develop creativity, encourage collaboration, and utilize problem-solving. School District 72 is excited to support and help our students gain the skills necessary to be highly successful in this rapidly evolving landscape.

G Suite for Education (GSFE) ’s G Suite for Education (GSFE) is a free collection of online tools (apps), specifically designed for K-12 school districts and universities that can be used for classroom collaboration. Google for Education Apps enable students to work and collaborate with classmates and teachers in a secure, private, online environment. This cloud-based solution enhances teacher-to-teacher, teacher-to-student, and student-to-student communication. School District 72 has chosen to join the growing number of educational institutions around the world that benefit from using GSFE as an online learning platform.

Managed Locally The GSFE apps available to SD72 students are managed by a team of SD72 educators and technicians. The district has the ability to customize the features and functions and limit student access as needed. Only district approved apps are available for student use.

Walled Garden of Protection Safety and protection of your child’s privacy is our top concern. We have set up different levels of accessibility based on educational level. In the elementary grades, students are given limited access. Their interactivity must remain within a “walled garden of protection,” set up by our SD72 administrative console. Students can collaborate with their teacher and classmates, but this is limited to only interacting with other people inside their walled garden (i.e. – their classmates). Email for elementary students is also restricted. The email address provided can only be used for account sign in, not for sending or receiving any actual email. As students move up through middle school and into secondary school, the limitations of the walled garden are slowly removed to increase responsibility and promote digital citizenship.

Elementary School: • Students will work within a “walled garden.” • Highest level of privacy and protection. • Accessibility to email is removed and only certain apps are allowed.

Middle School: • Walls of the protective garden are partially removed. • Students will obtain the ability to develop digital citizenship by using email to communicate with their teacher and classmates, but not to anyone outside of the school district. • Increased number of apps will be added.

Secondary School: • Walls of the protective garden are removed. • Highest level of responsibility for digital citizenship. • Students have full access to email and the district approved apps.

FIPPA: Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act Privacy legislation requires that we inform you that student account information (student first/last name and grade level), emails (pertinent only to middle and secondary students), documents, and uploaded onto the GSFE platform will be stored on secure Google servers located outside of Canada. These may be subject to the laws of foreign jurisdictions. Students will receive instructions on how to use their district managed GSFE account so that they can also become responsible digital citizens. Our school district has a very clear policy about the appropriate use of technology. Students will be expected to adhere to all school and district technology policies when utilizing GSFE at home and at school. Students will be made aware of and must agree to the SD72 Acceptable Use Guidelines (Operational Procedure 140) prior to access. If a student is found to be using any technology inappropriately then the account can be suspended.

Parent Consent In School District 72, all students under the age of 18 are required to obtain parental permission to activate a district managed G Suite account. This permission will need to be renewed annually. We hope that you will see the value in the GSFE tools. Only after you provide consent, will your child’s account be activated. If you choose not to grant permission, an alternative resource will be provided for your child. Parents who grant School District 72 consent for activating a student GSFE account understand that the purpose of this account is for educational use only. The following GSFE apps will apply to these different grade levels:
