  • If You Want to Know the Lord, Become Acaryavan
If you want to know the Lord, become acaryavan If you want to know the Lord, become acaryavan ISKCON Vrindavan We welcome all the assembled devotees and thank you for being with us this morning to hear Srimad Bhagavatam canto nine chapter eleven text number one. I already gave a little indication and I’m sure you heard the announcement this morning. Today is Srila Jiva Goswami’s disappearance day festival. So we will do a Bhagavatam verse and also we must remember Srila Jiva Goswami. Today is a very special day. Please repeat: Sri Suka Uvaca bhagavan atmanatmanam rama uttama-kalpakaih sarva-devamayam devam ije athacaryavan makhaih Translation and purport by SrilaPrabhupada ki Jai. Sukadeva Gosvami said: Thereafter, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Ramacandra, accepted an acarya and performed sacrifices [yajnas] with opulent paraphernalia. Thus He Himself worshiped Himself, for He is the Supreme Lord of all demigods. Purport: Sarvarhanam acyutejya. If Acyuta, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is worshiped, then everyone is worshiped. As stated in Srimad-Bhagavatam yathatarormula-nisecanena trpyanti tat-skandha-bhujopasakhah pranopaharac ca yathendriyanam tathaiva sarvarhanam acyutejya [SB 4.31.13] “As pouring water on the root of a tree nourishes the trunk, branches, twigs and leaves, and as supplying food to the stomach enlivens the senses and limbs of the body, worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead satisfies the demigods, who are part of that Supreme Personality.” Performing yajna involves worshiping the Supreme Lord. Here the Supreme Lord worshiped the Supreme Lord. Therefore it is said, bhagavan atmanatmanam ije: the Lord worshiped Himself by Himself.

  • Conversion and Ritualisation: an Analysis of How Westerners Enter the International Society for Krishna Consciousness and Assimilate Its Values and Practices
Conversion and Ritualisation: an Analysis of How Westerners Enter the International Society for Krishna Consciousness and Assimilate its Values and Practices A thesis submitted to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David In fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2016 Luc De Backer Acknowledgements I would like to thank all those who have supported me on my way. My gratitude to my supervisor Maya Warrier for her encouragements and five years of continued guidance, and to my second supervisor Bettina Schmidt for her valuable advice. My gratitude also goes to Kenneth Valpey, Matylda Obryk, Nima Gajjar, and Rogier Vrieling for proof reading my chapters and to all ISKCON devotees who have participated in this project. I also offer my special gratitude to Hridaya Chaitanya Dasa, ISKCON GBC Zonal Secretary for Spain, France, and the Benelux, for authorising me to conduct this research and to Yadunandana Swami for his encouragement to take up this scholarly endeavour. 2 Abstract The central aim of my thesis is to examine the processes by which individuals from a Western background enter the International Society for Krishna Consciousnes (ISKCON), a transnational religious movement with its roots in Chaitanya Vaishnavism, a Hindu tradition originating in India. The central argument of my research is that extant models of conversion do not do justice to the process by which individuals enter ISKCON and assimilate its values, beliefs, and practices. This thesis thus critically examines conversion models/theories and seeks to refine our understanding of conversion, especially in relation to groups in which everyday ritual practice plays a central role.

  • The Parampara Institution in Gaudiya Vaisnavism
The Parampara Institution In Gaudiya Vaisnavism –Jagadananda Das – Great philosophers could not reach the end of your glories, oh Lord, even if they should think on them with increasing joy for æonchars. For, in the form of the intelligence within and the teacher without, you destroy all inauspiciousness and reveal the way to attain you.(1) Contents: • ISKCON after the death of Bhaktivedanta • Schismatic tendencies in post-Prabhupada ISKCON • The first ISKCON heresy: rtvikvada or the doctrine of the monitor guru • The origins of the siksa-sampradaya idea • The Gaudiya Math after Bhaktisiddhanta's death • History of the parampara • Initiation in the Bhakti-sandarbha • Conclusions • Notes • Chart I: The guru-parampara of the Gaudiya Math • Chart II: The guru-pranali of Lalitaprasada Thakura Introduction One of the primary areas of concern in scholarly work surrounding new religious movements in the last decade has been that of succession. Since most new religions are centred about charismatic religious leaders, the death of a founder presents his or her followers with a crisis which is crucial for the survival of the sect he or she has created. In the context of those religions which have South Asian origin, the charismastic leader is given particular emphasis as the guru, who is often, as David Miller says, ... at the centre of sacredness. Sacred texts and the worship of deities are secondary matters compared with the centrality of the guru whose interpretations of the texts are often looked upon as more sacred than the texts themselves.(2) In the Indian tradition, great importance is placed on the personal search for a guru; it is the divine mission of a seeker to encounter a knower of the truth.(3) Each individual guru is an institution in himself, whether he establishes one temple or monastery or many, and is obliged at the time of his death to seek some kind of continuity.

  • Glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!
Krishna Bends All Logic Date: 2011-07-20 Author: Sharada devi dasi Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble pranams! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev! The below verse is a nice prayer by Kunti Maharani in Srimad Bhagavatam verse 1.8.30. Even though Kunti Maharani is the Lord's aunt she completely understands that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and declares that everything about Krishna is bewildering. janma karma ca viśvātmann ajasyākartur ātmanaḥ tiryaṅ-nṝṣiṣu yādaḥsu tad atyanta-viḍambanam Of course it is bewildering, O soul of the universe, that You work, though You are inactive, and that You take birth, though You are the vital force and the unborn. You Yourself descend amongst animals, men, sages and aquatics. Verily, this is bewildering. Krishna's logic cannot be understood by material vision. It is inconceivable. We cannot understand Krishna's lilas. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 3.6.39, Maitryea Muni while explaining the glories of Supreme Lord, says to saintly Vidura - " The wonderful potency of the Supreme Lord Krishna is bewildering even to the jugglers. That potential power is unknown even to the self-sufficient Lord, so it is certainly unknown to others." In the Govardhan pastime, if we apply our math and science logic, nothing would fit the puzzle but that is Krishna. As Maharaj always says, "In the spiritual world one minus one is also two." So with our Kali yuga brains, if we try to interpret what Krishna does, we would definitely not be able to understand. Even souls like Bhishmadev, Kunti Maharani, Vasudev, Mother Devaki, Nanda Maharaj and Yashoda Ma were always bewildered by the actions performed by the Lord.

  • Ways to Regulate Our Sleep - Part 1
Ways to Regulate Our Sleep - Part 1 Date: 2015-10-25 Author: Sudarshana devi dasi Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva. When Srila Prabhupada was giving class on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 6.3.18 in Gorakhpur on February 11 1971, few devotees dozed away. Inquiring with concern the reason for sleeping in class, His Divine Grace with right mix of humour and strictness gave many wonderful instructions which on constant hearing would definitely wake us from the deep slumber. The following are few drops of nectar from His Divine Grace's inspiring lecture. 1. Anyone who sleeps more than six or seven hours, he is a Kumbhakarna. Kumbhakarna was the brother of Ravana. He was sleeping six months, and six months he was awake. That means anyone who sleeps half the (day), out of twenty-four hours, anyone, if he sleeps twelve hours, he's a Kumbhakarna. So at least I think that one should not sleep more than seven hours utmost. That is sufficient, sufficient, seven hours. So you can sleep six hours at night and one hour to rest in daytime. That is sufficient. But if you sleep more than that, then you are Kumbhakarna. You should adjust things. 2. We should not take very leniently that we are going back to Godhead. Of course, there is so many concession for the... But at the same time, we should be very much aware of the responsibility that we have decided to go back to Godhead after leaving this body, so we have to perform some austerities.

  • Ways to Regulate Our Sleep - Part 4
Ways to Regulate Our Sleep - Part 4 Date: 2015-10-28 Author: Sudarshana devi dasi Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva. This is in continuation of the previous topic, "Ways to Regulate Sleep", which is based on sublime instructions given by His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 6.3.18 in Gorakhpur on February 11 1971. 1. Srila Prabhupada then quotes one of the verses from Sri Sad-Goswami-ashtaka composed by Srinivasa acarya which explains how by properly engaging themselves in service of Krishna, the six Goswamis were able to regulate the eating and sleeping habits. saṅkhyā-pūrvaka-nāma-gāna-natibhiḥ kālāvasānī-kṛtau nidrāhāra-vihārakādi-vijitau cātyanta-dīnau ca yau rādhā-kṛṣṇa-guṇa-smṛter madhurimānandena sammohitau vande rūpa-sanātanau raghu-yugau śrī-jīva-gopālakau I offer my respectful obeisances unto the six Goswamis, namely Sri Rupa Goswami, Sri Sanatana Goswami, Sri Raghunatha Bhatta Goswami, Sri Raghunatha dasa Goswami, Sri Jiva Goswami, and Sri Gopala Bhatta Goswami, who were engaged in chanting the holy names of the Lord and bowing down in a scheduled measurement. In this way they utilized their valuable lives and in executing these devotional activities they conquered over eating and sleeping and were always meek and humble enchanted by remembering the transcendental qualities of the Lord. 2. Devotional service is not a stressful activity, but a joyful one - susukham kartum avyayam. So His Divine Grace says that "the six Goswamis saved time in this way, and radha-krishna-padaaravinda-bhajananandena mattaalikau, be jolly in the service of Radha-Krishna, bhajanananda.

  • History of the Vaiṣṇava Movement (Excerpts)
History of the Vaiṣṇava Movement (Excerpts) HISTORY The roots of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition lie several millenia in the past of India. The four Vedas, Rig, Sama, Yajur and Atharva, the Purana-epics illustrating the precepts of the Vedas, and the vast Mahabharata narrating the story of Krishna and the Pandava-brothers, in which the famous Bhagavad-gita is included, form the ancient basis of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. The Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition is a part of a larger section of Hinduism known as Vaishnavism. The Vaishnavas understand Vishnu, the Almighty Supreme, as the preserving and purpose-giving God of existence. Some Vaishnava-traditions focus on God in his divinely magnificent Vishnu-form, while others accept the all- enchanting form of Krishna as the object of their worship. The devotional religions of India are collectively known as the bhakti-tradition. THE FOUR VAISNAVA TRADITIONS The ancient Vaishnava-tradition felt a breeze of renewal around 1000 CE as four great Vaishnava-teachers presented their commentaries on the essence of Vedanta and taught the same to their numerous followers. They were Vishnusvami (born ca. 700 CE) who founded his own school; Ramanuja (1017-1137 CE), who founded a tradition known as the Sri- sampradaya, basing his views on the teachings of the Alvar- saints of the past and forming a theology called visishta- advaita; Nimbarka (ca. 1100 CE), who founded his own tradition; as well as Madhva (1199-1278 CE), who also offered his own interpretation of Vedanta, establishing his own theology known as dvaita. THE BHAKTI-MOVEMENTS OF THE 16th CENTURY The renaissance of Vaishnavism began in the early 1600's as Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486-1534 CE) started his bhakti-movement in West Bengal in the district of Nadia.
