As early as aid-seventeenth century we find Jijabai, who inspired Shivaji to establish Hindavi Swarajya. After Jijabai, we find the examples of Tarabai, Umabai, Gopikabai, Anandibai, Ahilyabai Holkar and Rani Laxmibai. (1) Iii£ S.QCIQ-ECOHQMIC CQHDITIOHS In pre-independence India, Maharashtra, or then Bonbay province, was second only to Bengal province regarding the level of socio-cultural development. (2). The political awakening of the Maharashtra women was the direct result of various socio-cultural movements. However, the social, psychological and familial restraints on women did not allow this political awakening to be translated into actual political participation. (3). In British India the condition of the women in Maharashtra was much better than their counterpart in the North. Women in Maharashtra did not follow 'Purdah', except in case of Maratha Vatandar families and due to this they had a greater opportunity for wider social interaction. (4). Even the standard of living enjoyed by the women in Maharashtra was higher, thanks to the prevalent Rayatwari system, wherein the entire family used to be involved in productive farming. (5). t J SOCIAL REFORMS HOVEHEHT : We find two distinct parallels in the social reforms movement in Maharashtra, a trend which more or less continues even today, though with some variations : 1. The upper caste movement with the reformers like Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, Maharshi D.K.Karve ,M.G.Ranade, Pandita Ramabai, Ramabai Ranade et al. 2.     4. Economic Development Mixed Economy : Brainstorming about the kind of economy we would adopt after independence started much before India got independence. Our Prime Minister Pandit Nehru adopted the middle path rather than taking recourse to any extremes. Some countries had adopted capitalism, while some had adopted socialism. Each type of economy had its own advantages. In a capitalist system, the means of production are privately owned. In a socialist economy, the means of production are owned by the State in the name of the society. A mixed economy works both in the private and the public sector. In order to achieve economic development of modern India, we gave preference to a model of ‘mixed economy’. We can see three parts in this kind of economy : (1) Public Sector : The industries in this sector are completely under the control and management of the government. For example, production of defence equipment. (2) Private Sector : The industries in this sector are owned by private industrialists. Of course, the government supervises and controls them too. For example, consumer goods. (3) Joint Sector : In this sector, some industries are owned by private industrialists, while some are run under government management. For mixed economy to run smoothly there is a need for coordination between the private sector and the public sector. This system aims at maximisation of production and popular participation on a large scale. An effort has been made in this system to bring together the good aspects of both the capitalist and the socialist systems. A mixed economy cannot ignore the profit motive, entrepreneurship, discipline, time bound planning, etc.

For this sole purpose he made a small beginning with the establishment of the “Shri Shivaji Education Society at Amravati in 1932”. The Society began with just one school and one hostel, but today it has grown into the biggest educational organization in Central India. It runs 307 educational institutions ranging from pre-primary to post graduate colleges covering almost all fields of formal and informal education: Arts, Agriculture, Biotechnology, Commerce, Computers, Education, Engineering and Technology, Fine Arts, Horticulture, Law, Medicine, Microbiology, Physical Education, and a host of related fields. ..2..
