By the time he passed away on April 10, 1965, he had laid a firm foundation for the dissemination of education among the downtrodden and the have not the dispossessed of the region. He knew that prosperity would come only when the weapon of knowledge becames available to all. For this sole purpose he made a small beginning with the establishment of the “Shri Shivaji Education Society at Amravati in 1932”. The Society began with just one school and one hostel, but today it has grown into the biggest educational organization in Central India. It runs 307 educational institutions ranging from pre-primary to post graduate colleges covering almost all fields of formal and informal education: Arts, Agriculture, Biotechnology, Commerce, Computers, Education, Engineering and Technology, Fine Arts, Horticulture, Law, Medicine, Microbiology, Physical Education, and a host of related fields. ..2.. Besides working tirelessly for the peasants of Vidarbha, Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh also contributed in the progress of the nation. His contributions were recognized when he was selected by Jawaharlal Nehru to become the first Minister for Agriculture in the Union Cabinet. He dedicated all his talents and energy to the formulation and implementation of policies that would bring prosperity to agriculture and the agriculturists. He established the 'Bharat Krushak Samaj" and launched a campaign called 'Food for Millions' in 1955. He brought in the Japanese method of rice cultivation in 1958 and organized the World Agriculture Fair in 1959 which was inaugurated by the then President of the US, Dwight Eisenhower. The Fair was visited by dignitaries all across the world, some of them being Nikita Khrushchev, the President of the USSR, Mr. Bulganin, Secretary of the Communist Party of Soviet Russia, Lord and Lady Mountbatten, and many others. Dr.Panjabrao Deshmukh started the process for the establishment of Agriculture Universities all across the country, and gave fill-up to agricultural education, agricultural research and related extension activities. He wanted to ensure that the ultimate beneficiary of all this enterprise would be the ordinary farmer. He opened rural institutes that would train youngsters in the engineering and technical aspects of farming. Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh also made useful contributions as a member of the Draft committee for the Constitution of the Republic of India chaired by Dr. B.R.Ambedkar. To undertake rural development programme for the upliftment of villages and the rural areas with such instruments like the rural development institutes and its like. To establish farmers association for safeguarding their interests and for ventilating their grievances. To disseminate the latest knowledge and technology in farming, so that the people of this region are always in the flow of the latest currents worldwide. To open Shri Shivaji Loka Vidyapeeth to speed up the programme of cultural renaissance and advancement of knowledge.] . To undertake exclusive programme for caste eradication, social reformation and freedom from debt of the farmers and peasants. Objectives of the Society : Dr. Panjabrao alias Bhausaheb Deshmukh, the first Agricultural Minister of India, established Shri Shivaji Education Society, Amravati in the year 1932 for the following purposes: To establish, conduct, manage, supervise and take over educational institutions of various kinds for boys, girls and adults. To provide facilities for the acquisition of knowledge and information and the advancement of culture; ..4.. To undertake make available facilities for research in all branches of knowledge and to establish institutions for the purpose. To carry on experiments with a view to improving methods of teaching and to establishing institutions for this purpose. To encourage physical, culture and start conduct or manage institutions for this purpose. To encourage women’s education by establishing special institutions like hostels, window’s homes and nursing school, etc. To establish hostels for poor boys and girls and to open and conduct orphanages. To co-operate with Government other societies, institutions and bodies for the purpose of promoting the cause of education and spread of knowledge and culture. To establish, start conduct and manage Printing Presses for publishing books, periodicals journals and other educational media; To undertake farming, gardening and to acquire or take on lease, or to purchase land for the same purpose. To start other subsidiary activities and institutions such as the establishment of stores, medical aid societies etc. To help, assist and aid every institution under the management of the society or otherwise by advice; guidance and supervision. To organize exhibitions and culture – weeks, etc. To organize and run to tournaments, competitions Olympiads etc; To undertake publicity and propaganda by all possible means, such as films lectures, debates and demonstrations; To hold organize arrange and manage conferences, Seminars, Kavi Sammelans etc; To acquire property both movable and immovable, to raise funds for carrying out the objectives of the Society on security of its immovable property and for that purpose to allenate immovable property of the Society by mortgage, sale etc; To carry out each and every thing and all such things as are incidental or helpful or conducive to the accomplishment, attainment, and furtherance of the above objectives. ..5..
