Generation No. 2

2. TIMOTHY 2 MCCORMACK (TIMOTHY 1) was born Abt. 1800 in Cooleeny Templetuohy Tipperary IRELAND, and died in before 1856. He married CATHERINE BANNON 1835 in Templetuohy Tipperary IRELAND, daughter of HUGH BANNON and BRIDGET MOCKLER. She was born 1808 in Thurles Co Tipperary Ireland, and died 20 Oct 1884 in Lost River.

TIMOTHY MCCORMACK:

The McCormack family (frequently called simply Cormack in Irish records) originally came from the townland of Cooleeny, near Templetuohy, County Tipperary, Ireland. Timothy Cormack (born about 1733 and died 11 May 1794) was the father of Thomas Cormack who married Cath née Dempsey.

Thomas Cormack and Cath née Dempsey had a son Timothy as well as three daughters, Judith born 1810; Catty born 1811; and Catherine born 1815. By 1827 Thomas Cormack was the holder of land in the townland of Graiguefrahane, in the civil parish of Loughmore East, County Tipperary.

On 25 February 1835 Timothy Cormack, the son of Thomas Cormack and Cath née Dempsey, married Catherine Bannon in the parish of Holycross, County Tipperary. The witnesses to the wedding were Hugh Bannon and Denis Bannon.

Catherine Bannon had been born about 1808. She was the daughter of Hugh Bannon (died 9 November 1857, aged 79, and buried Ballycahill) and Bridget née Mockler (died 1 June 1852, aged 76, and buried Ballycahill). Catherine's place of birth was probably Ballycahill, a small village in the parish of Holycross.

Catherine, widow of Timothy McCormack arrived in with 6 children on the ship 'Harkaway' on 23rd February 1855 and settled at 'Red Hill' .

Timothy Cormack and Catherine nee Bannon had eight children, all born at Loughmore.

In 1851 Catherine Cormack née Bannon was residing in the townland of Graiguefrahane, Loughmore East. Her husband Timothy does not appear and so presumably Catherine was a widow by this stage. About 1854 Catherine Cormack née Bannon and her six surviving children migrated to Sydney.

CATHERINE BANNON:

Catherine, widow of Timothy McCormack arrived in Sydney with their 6 children on the ship "Harkaway " on 23rd February 1855 and settled at 'Red Hill' Wheeo.

Life in Australia: The McCormack’s settled first at Menangle where there was a large Irish community. The pisé home of the McCormack’s was near where the rotolactor later was located, north of the village of Menangle, south of the Nepean River and west of where the Main Southern Railway later ran.

The land that the McCormack’s were on was therefore probably part of the Camden Park Estate owned by the Macarthur family.

Catherine Bannon had been born about 1808. She was the daughter of Hugh Bannon (who died 9 November 1857, aged 79, and buried Ballycahill) and Bridget née Mockler (who died 1 June 1852, aged 76, and buried Ballycahill). Catherine's place of birth was probably Ballycahill, a small village in the parish of Holycross.

In 1861 the Parliament passed the Crown Lands Act which allowed colonists to select for themselves land in quantities not less than 40 nor more than 320 acres, at the fixed price of 20 shillings an acre. The McCormack family, except for Bridget whose husband worked on the railways, then moved to the Crookwell area where, in 1863, Hugh McCormack selected land. Hugh's brothers later also acquired land.

On 20 October 1884 Catherine McCormack nee Bannon died at Lost River, near Crookwell. At the time of her death she was housekeeping for the widow and children of her son Timothy (who had died in 1882).

Children of TIMOTHY MCCORMACK and CATHERINE BANNON are: i. THOMAS 3 MCCORMACK, b. 08 May 1836, Loughmore, Co Tipperary; d. Abt. 1836, Loughmore, Co Tipperary.

Freemans Journal 20 Jun 1912

A very old and highly-esteemed resident of Temora, in the person of Mrs. John Ryan, died at her late residence, 'Tara Villa’ Broadway, on Ascension Thursday, 16thMay, 1912, at the mature age of 65 years. Mrs. Ryan had been ailing for some time with heart trouble, and about a month ago returned home from a holiday in Sydney She caught a chill and pneumonia set in, which was the ultimate cause of death. Mrs. Ryan was a sister of Mr. J.I Mc Cormack, of Moora Moora Station, and of Mr. Hugh McCormack, of Killarney, Wheeo. Born in Limerick, Ireland, deceased came to Australia with her mother when about fourteen years of age, and settled at Emu Plains, near Penrith. He first husband was killed leaving her with a family of eight children, of which four survive their parents. They are Timothy, Thomas, Mrs. M. Coleman (Junee), and Michael (Harden). Shortly after the death of her first husband, the then Mrs. Egan left Emu Plains and went to Goulburn, and later to Junee. After some months in Junee she went to Wagga, and there married Mr. John Ryan, who had a butchering business. Having spent several years in Wagga Mr. and Mrs. Ryan returned to Junee, and resided there ever since. Three children were born of the second marriage — viz., Nurse B. M. Ryan, Helena Mary, and William. Mrs. Ryan was a devout Catholic, a good wife, and a kind mother, and was of a very sympathetic nature. The funeral left her late residence on Saturday, and was the largest over seen in Junee, headed by the Rev. Father Gaffey and about 60 Hibernians, and a number of townspeople. The Rev. Father Gaffey officiated at the graveside.— R.I.P.

FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT IN NEW SOUTHWALES. A terbium; railway accident occurred on the Western line of railway on January 31, resulting in sad loss of life. The catastrophe occurred at about 10 minutes past 11, on the Western line running through Emu Plains, between the ordinary goods train timed to leave Penrith at 11 o'clock p.m. and a special goods train proceeding towards that station. Three men have been killed and two very severely injured. The former were John Egan, driver, John Wiggins, fireman, and Brady, an assistant guard, who were all engaged on the leading engine of the train leaving Penrith; and the latter are John Larking, foreman, and Michael Stevenson, driver, both of the special train. It is supposed that Egan- and Wiggins were killed instantly by the tremendous concussion between the locomotives, but how Brady lost his life is not at present clear. He may have attempted to jump off the engine and been crushed afterwards. It was sometime before his body was discovered, and it was in a fearfully mutilated condition. The guard of the up special was fortunate enough to escape without material injury beyond a severe shaking. Immediately upon the accident being made known some of the railway officials went to the. spot, and found a scene of awful confusion and wreck. Sparks from the engine furnaces had been blown about by the wind, and had got amongst the trucks and debris, and set fire to them, and the result was, that out of some 22 merchandise waggons in the down train, there were no less than nine literally burnt to cinders; and of the other train, consisting of 13 trucks of coal and shale, five were destroyed, three being wholly and two partly burnt. It is said that one of the carriages near to those which were burnt contained dynamite and other explosives. The engines, which were thrown over, rolled down the bank, and of course are damaged almost irremediably. No time was lost in looking after the dead and the injured. It is stated that Driver John Egan leaves a wife and several children, and Fireman Wiggins also a family. The cause of the catastrophe is generally attributed to the tram from Bowenfels not waiting at Wascoe's till the up train passed. Both engines are completely smashed, one being new. Egan's body is frightfully mutilated. Stephenson, the engine driver, states that he was the driver of the ordinary goods train, conveying 22 trucks loaded with merchandise to Bathurst and Orange, and which left Redfern station at 9 o'clock last night. Penrith was reached at about 11 p.m., and 10 minutes afterwards the collision occurred. They were on that part of the line where good time is made by the up and the down trains, on the Emu Plains, at the foot of Wascoe. Though he was the driver, and in front, there was, as usual at Penrith, a second engine in the rear, for helping the leading engine to pull the load up the mountain. The pace he was going at was 35 or 40 miles an hour. Suddenly he saw a dim light before him, as if it was a man carrying a lamp. He remarked the circumstance to the stoker who was with him, but in about a minute afterwards the light appeared too high for & man carrying a lamp and he was immediately horrified by seeing that it was an approaching train, travelling down the mountain at a furious rate. He saw at a glance that a collision was inevitable, but had the presence of mind to sound his whistle and put on the break. The screaming of the two approaching engines and the noise of the breaks announced a coming catastrophe, but he (Stevenson)says he remained quite cool, and a moment before the collision took place clasped a rail with his hands, closed his eyes, and turning to his mate the stroker, John Wiggins, said, ' Good bye, Jack.' He remembered no more. An inquest was held on the bodies of the three men killed, and a verdict of manslaughter was returned against George Purdue, the driver of the train to Sydney. A rider was added that the Government should be more particular as to the instructions given about goods and special trains arriving at and departing from sidings.

THE KILLED AND INJURED.

Egan, the driver of the up-special engine, was about 40 years of age, and had been for many years employed in the Railway Department. He is given a character by all who knew of having been a quiet, steady man. Most sad to relate, he leaves a wife and eight children in Penrith, totally unprovided for Burial: Emu Plains Cemetery

Mr. Thomas Egan- formerly of Wagga, is seriously ill at his home in Thirroul, He was recently in it city hospital and little could be done for him. With his brothers, Timothy, Patrick, John and Michael, he went to school under Mr. Michael Moran, at Wagga. Later they all joined the railway service, and it was no uncommon sight to see the late Pat and Tim Egan on the same train, one as engine driver, and the other as guard. Michael retired from the railway service some years ago, and is now living in Albury. John died when an engine driver at Junee. Thomas was due to retire when he became seriously ill. For many years before joining the railway service he was employed by J. S. Symington, jeweller' at Junee. The Egan’s father was killed while in charge of his train on the Blue Mountains and his widow, with her large young family, was given charge of the Tarcutta road, Wagga, railway crossing gates in 1880. Mr. William Ryan, a half-brother to Thomas Egan, is an engine drive at Albury. Goulburn Post 31 May 1907 FRIDAY, MAY 31, 1907. OBITUARY

It is with feelings of regret we record the death of an old and highly respected resident of this district in the person of Mr. James Sheehy, which sad event took place at his residence, Crookwell, on Wednesday morning last, the cause of death being Chronic Bronchitis. Deceased had only been ailing for about three weeks and was under the care of Dr. Pawlett, who however, entertained no hopes of his recovery from the commencement. Despite the fact that he received unremitting attention and careful nursing from a devoted wife and daughter, he passed the Rubicon as stated at the age of sixty-five years.

The late Mr. Sheehy was born in Limerick, Ireland, and when a young man left this native land for New Zealand, where he remained for some time, after which he came to Wheeo where he resided about twenty years successfully engaged in agricultural and pastoral pursuits. Finding his health failing about eight years ago, he, with his wife and only daughter came to live in Crookwell, where he resided up to the time of his death.

He was very unassuming and led a most exemplary and christian life, and he always took an active interest in the political destinies of the land of his birth.

He leaves his wife and daughter who survive him (his only son having predeceased him some year's ago) in comfortable circumstances. The deceased was a brother to Mr. E. Sheehy, Wheeo, Mr. Thos. Sheehy, New Zealand, and brother-in-law to Mr. Hugh McCormack, Wheeo, and Mr. Thos. McCormack, Condobolin.

The funeral which was a large one took place on Thurs-day, when the remains were interred in the R.C. Cemetery, Wheeo, and the Rev. J. Kennedy officiating at the grave.

The Egan family, of which there were five employed in the railways at different periods, went to school at St. Michael's at Wagga. In the early nineties it was no common sight to see Timothy and Patrick Egan on the same train from Albury to Junee, one as an engine driver, and the other as a guard. Both died over 36 years ago

NITA BERNICE ANDERSON 21 December 1922 – 18 July 2006

Nita was born 21st December 1922 in Crookwell NSW. Her parents were Guildford Baker and Sabina Gertrude Baker nee Drew

She was the fourth child in the family after Brenda, Bert and Reg, who have all predeceased her. She has been survived by 2 sisters, Joy and Pat who are younger.

She had a wonderful childhood growing up at the Laggan Mill, where she said the children had the run of the mill and in the bad weather they played in the large room in the mill, where dances were held.

Nita and her younger sister Joy both joined the WAAFS (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force) during WW2 where they were sent to Melbourne to do their initial training. After the initial training Nita was stationed at Uranquinty and Joy went to Southport in Qld. Nita’s time in the Air Force she thoroughly enjoyed and often recalled, when she talked about the people that she had met and friends she made. There is a marvellous photo of Nita in her WAAF uniform in the book “Crookwell NSW At War”.

After the war she spent some years in Townsville where she went to visit her sister Joy. Joy had married Les Finerty who came from Townsville and Nita stayed to help her with her rapidly growing young family.

She returned to Crookwell NSW where she met, fell in love with, and married Max Anderson. After being married some years Nita and Max welcomed into their family Kim and Patti, both of whom were their pride and joy and who completed their family.

Nita and Max bought a farm at Redground, where they both worked hard to make it a success.

Nita was always very involved in church, community and school activities such as Red Cross and the Hospital Auxiliary, she was assistant manager of the St Vincent de Paul shop, for 15 years until she had to give it up because of failing eyesight.

She loved sport and always went to watch Max when he played cricket; she played tennis until she said “she thought she was getting too old to run around a tennis court”. Then she took up bowls and became an avid bowls player and was an active club participant holding different positions such as president of the club.

She worked in different businesses in town, i.e. Clifton’s Pharmacy, Bassingthwaighte Bros, the Shire Council. and was the manager of the swimming pool. She spent some time as the secretary of St Marys School

During the latter years of her life, her grandchildren brought her much happiness; Kim and Ellen’s children - Rachel and Jamie, and Raymond and Patti’s children - Trent, Drew and Bree were an absolute delight to her.

She also has nieces and nephews with whom she was very close all of whom will miss her: Jan and Lee; Barry (dec) Lesleigh, Deidre, Cheryl, Rick, Jenny and Lindy; Sharon, Gil, Graham and Peter; Clark, Tracey and David
