Descendants of Richard Weeks Descendants of Richard Weeks by Rhonda Brownlow and Monica Jones [email protected] Generation No. 1 RICHARD 2 W EEKS (T HOMAS 1) was born Abt. 1810 in Hanley Dorset England, and died 04 Sep 1868 in Redbank Taralga NSW Rg 4108. Burial: Stonequarry Cemetery Taralga He married M ARY A NN B RADLEY 31 Jul 1833 in St. Giles Parish Dorset England. She was born 1813 in Henley Dorset England, and died 11 Apr 1876 in Bolong NSW Rg 06225. Journey to Australia Times were extremely hard in the south of England during the 1830s. Hundreds wandered the countryside looking for work and something to eat. The sheer poverty and hardships drove many thousands to gather together their belongings and emigrate to America and Australia. Because the Australian Emigration Agent in London had been offering ' free passage to New South Wales' for men and their wives under 30 years, interest in that developing new land was intense. A handout bill being circulated at that time by the Emigration Agent, stated there was 'an extensive and urgent' demand for carpenters, joiners, stonemasons and cutters, bricklayers, plasterers, blacksmiths, wheelwrights, glaziers, agricultural servants, shepherds and gardeners. Hundreds of families responded to the Bill and their moves were made that much easier following special 'Poor Laws' enacted by King William IV which ensured anyone in need could be given passage to a British Colony. Edward Macarthur son of merino sheep pioneer John Macarthur of Camden New South Wales, was visiting England around that time, recruiting suitable workers for the Macarthur farms in Australia 1. In 1836 Major Edward Macarthur sought the assistance of Reverend John West, Rector of Chettle, in Dorset, in finding suitable volunteers to emigrate to New South Wales to work on the ‘Macarthurs' Camden Park Estate. Edward Macarthur took up grants of 1150 acres (465 ha) each at Camden; in 1838 borrowed £10,000 in London to acquire the Belmont estate at Camden, where they built an inn, an Anglican Church and twenty cottages for selected immigrants from Kent and Dorsetshire. The emigrant ship, “ Brothers” , sailed from Southampton to end of a four and a half month voyage sailing into Sydney Harbour on 8 April 1837 under the Master Robert Towns. The "Brothers " was the first ship chartered by the Macarthur brothers to import free men and their families to work their estates at Camden. Memorandum of agreement between the undersigned Emigrants, H.M.S. 'Brothers' , and Messrs James, William and Edward Macarthur 11 April 1837 I agree for myself, and brother James Macarthur to fulfil the agreement made by Major Edward Macarthur in England with the undersigned parties and which is as follows: That we will give you during good behaviour for three years, that you may be in our service, Fifteen Pounds (£15 .00s .00d) per annum, a cottage rent free, a plot of ground for a garden, 7 lbs of meat and 11 lbs of flour per week, also the privilege of keeping a cow, with pigs and poultry, on condition of their getting into no mischief and being solely for your own use, and after five years, should you continue in our service, we will establish you as a tenant on fertile land, taking the rent either in labour or in produce and during the first six months in our service, to give your wives one half of the above allowance of provisions. The service to commence from April 11, 1837, which is the day you left the ship. Camden 14.4.1837 W Macarthur And we the undersigned, on our parts overall agree to the above mentioned conditions and in consideration of the above mentioned advantages to serve our employers the above mentioned Edward, James and William Macarthur in the capacity of farm servants, or in such other occupation that we may be directed either by them, or by their agents or overseers, faithfully and diligently to the best of our ability for the space of three years from the 11th day of April 1837. • Chapter 18: Lachlan River Catchment
18 Lachlan River Catchment Maitland Mercury & Hunter River Advertiser, 5 April 1862 True Tales of the Trout Cod: River Histories of the Murray-Darling Basin 18-1 The Lachlan (From the Empire’s Correspondent) March 30 – The continued absence of rain causing stoppage of the puddling machines for want of water, is the sole reason of the small escort leaving tomorrow. As before stated, the river, one mile distant, is tabooed for washing purposes to the last dregs, so that the returns per escort will diminish until we are blessed with the winter’s rain. Great quantities of fish have this week been picked up by hand out of the bed of the lagoon between the Victoria and Caledonian loads, some of the codfish weighing over 30 pounds weight, besides bream, perch and jewfish, the latter being one of the oddest of the finny tribe, presenting the appearance of half newt, with porpoise head and feelers round the mouth. This fish deposits its ova in a gravelly cell on the bottom using stones of upwards of a pound weight in their construction (as a blackfellow asserts). Certain it is that little mounds, of beehive form, abound in this lagoon, containing gravel.
