Burial: Stonequarry Cemetery Taralga He married M ARY A NN B RADLEY 31 Jul 1833 in St. Giles Parish Dorset England. She was born 1813 in Henley Dorset England, and died 11 Apr 1876 in Bolong NSW Rg 06225. Journey to Australia Times were extremely hard in the south of England during the 1830s. Hundreds wandered the countryside looking for work and something to eat. The sheer poverty and hardships drove many thousands to gather together their belongings and emigrate to America and Australia. Because the Australian Emigration Agent in London had been offering ' free passage to New South Wales' for men and their wives under 30 years, interest in that developing new land was intense. A handout bill being circulated at that time by the Emigration Agent, stated there was 'an extensive and urgent' demand for carpenters, joiners, stonemasons and cutters, bricklayers, plasterers, blacksmiths, wheelwrights, glaziers, agricultural servants, shepherds and gardeners. Hundreds of families responded to the Bill and their moves were made that much easier following special 'Poor Laws' enacted by King William IV which ensured anyone in need could be given passage to a British Colony. Edward Macarthur son of merino sheep pioneer John Macarthur of Camden New South Wales, was visiting England around that time, recruiting suitable workers for the Macarthur farms in Australia 1. In 1836 Major Edward Macarthur sought the assistance of Reverend John West, Rector of Chettle, in Dorset, in finding suitable volunteers to emigrate to New South Wales to work on the ‘Macarthurs' Camden Park Estate. Edward Macarthur took up grants of 1150 acres (465 ha) each at Camden; in 1838 borrowed £10,000 in London to acquire the Belmont estate at Camden, where they built an inn, an Anglican Church and twenty cottages for selected immigrants from Kent and Dorsetshire. The emigrant ship, “ Brothers” , sailed from Southampton to end of a four and a half month voyage sailing into Sydney Harbour on 8 April 1837 under the Master Robert Towns. The "Brothers " was the first ship chartered by the Macarthur brothers to import free men and their families to work their estates at Camden. Memorandum of agreement between the undersigned Emigrants, H.M.S. 'Brothers' , and Messrs James, William and Edward Macarthur 11 April 1837 I agree for myself, and brother James Macarthur to fulfil the agreement made by Major Edward Macarthur in England with the undersigned parties and which is as follows: That we will give you during good behaviour for three years, that you may be in our service, Fifteen Pounds (£15 .00s .00d) per annum, a cottage rent free, a plot of ground for a garden, 7 lbs of meat and 11 lbs of flour per week, also the privilege of keeping a cow, with pigs and poultry, on condition of their getting into no mischief and being solely for your own use, and after five years, should you continue in our service, we will establish you as a tenant on fertile land, taking the rent either in labour or in produce and during the first six months in our service, to give your wives one half of the above allowance of provisions. The service to commence from April 11, 1837, which is the day you left the ship.
