  • Additional Submission to the Leveson Inquiry – February 2012
TRANS MEDIA WATCH – ADDITIONAL SUBMISSION TO THE LEVESON INQUIRY – FEBRUARY 2012 A. Introduction Trans Media Watch (TMW) wishes to make this additional submission to the Leveson Inquiry into press standards, ethics and culture. It follows the submission made by TMW to the Inquiry in January 20121, and the oral evidence given by Helen Belcher to the Inquiry on behalf of TMW on 8 February 2012. In our original submission, TMW explained some of the various ways that the press uses to misrepresent the trans and intersex communities, including themes such as “trans as fraud”, “trans as undeserving” and “trans as deviant”. We feel it will be useful for the Inquiry to review the coverage of trans issues in the press, specifically but not exclusively from The Sun and the Mail newspapers, since 8 February. In summary: The press has published two main stories featuring trans people over the past two weeks, both appearing on front pages. This is in addition to the standard low level coverage that trans issues get in the mainstream media. With both there are significant concerns over misrepresentation, with corresponding effects on public perception of the issues. With both there are significant concerns over placing vulnerable people, including innocent children, at risk of physical violence. The key issue is the complete lack of respect shown to trans people. Far from mending their ways and reporting trans stories more sensitively, as claimed in person before the Inquiry2, the press has shown a distasteful rush to objectify and sensationalise these stories in a way that places real people in real danger.

  • Tamara: Welcome Eliza to the Females in Tech Show
Tamara: Welcome Eliza to The Females in Tech Show. I am so excited to have you on the show. Before we get started, what is one thing that you're grateful for today? Elaiza Benitez: Being alive. Tamara: Oh, wow. That is so beautiful. That really touches my heart given the bush fires in Australia at the moment, and made me a lot more grounded and grateful for life, so that's really beautiful that you've said that. Elaiza Benitez: Yeah. Tamara: The next quick-fire question, can you tell us about a recent achievement or something you're proud of? Elaiza Benitez: Actually, last week I was a first-time speaker at Microsoft conference called Microsoft Ignite. It was really was an amazing experience. I presented three sessions all on Day One of the conference and that was really cool. I was very, very nervous leading up to it, so probably three weeks beforehand, as a speaker there is a thing called the speakers portal, and you can see the number of registrations to your sessions. One of my sessions kept increasing and increasing and I was thinking, "Oh no, I have never presented to that large number before". Once I did my first session, I was fine. Tamara: Amazing. That is unbelievable. What did you present on? Elaiza Benitez: I had three presentations. The first one is what we call a community-related trek. It was around my travels around the world for three and a half months, and along the way I met the Microsoft community as it something that I've always wanted to do, and this year I did it.

  • House of Representatives
House of Representatives JON BURNS MAJORITY LEADER ROOM 338, STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA 30334 December 4, 2020 SENT VIA EMAIL: Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger Chairperson of the State Election Board Mrs. Rebecca N. Sullivan Vice-Chairperson of the State Election Board Dear Secretary Raffensperger and Mrs. Sullivan, As I am sure you have seen over the past month, many Georgians, including my colleagues who have signed this correspondence, have serious concerns about Georgia’s elections. As we approach a critical election on January 5, 2021, it is clear that Georgia voters must have confidence in the election process going forward. To that end, below you will find two common-sense suggestions: a rule that should be promulgated by the State Election Board (the “SEB”) and additional resources of which the Office of the Secretary of State (the “SOS”) or the SEB could take advantage. I. Absentee Ballot Application and Mail-In Absentee Ballot Signature Review Process. As the process currently stands, when a voter wishes to vote early by mail, they submit an Absentee Ballot Application (“Application”) either through the mail or online. When a local Board of Registrars (the “BOR”) receives a paper Application, typically, a single employee of the BOR is responsible for the initial review of a signature on a paper Application. If that paper Application is accepted, the BOR mails an Absentee Ballot to the voter. The process for reviewing signatures on the external envelope of a returned Absentee Ballot is the same – a single employee of the BOR is allowed to “approve” a signature without oversight by other employees or independent observers.

  • CA Students Urge Assembly Members to Pass AB
May 26, 2021 The Honorable Members of the California State Assembly State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: Thousands of CA Public School Students Strongly Urge Support for AB 101 Dear Members of the Assembly, We are a coalition of California high school and college students known as Teach Our History California. Made up of the youth organizations Diversify Our Narrative and GENup, we represent 10,000 youth leaders from across the State fighting for change. Our mission is to ensure that students across California high schools have meaningful opportunities to engage with the vast, diverse, and rich histories of people of color; and thus, we are in deep support of AB101 which will require high schools to provide ethnic studies starting in academic year 2025-26 and students to take at least one semester of an A-G approved ethnic studies course to graduate starting in 2029-30. Our original petition made in support of AB331, linked here, was signed by over 26,000 CA students and adult allies in support of passing Ethnic Studies. Please see appended to this letter our letter in support of AB331, which lists the names of all our original petition supporters. We know AB101 has the capacity to have an immense positive impact on student education, but also on student lives as a whole. For many students, our communities continue to be systematically excluded from narratives presented to us in our classrooms. By passing AB101, we can change the precedent of exclusion and allow millions of students to learn the histories of their peoples.
