Islamic Fundamentalism: A Quantitative Analysis Abstract Islamic fundamentalist movements are inherently anti-system social movements. An anti-system social movement is designed to criticize governmental institutions and the political mainstream while mobilizing disaffected individuals against the existing sociopolitical and socioeconomic institutions. What is lacking in the mindset of many Western politicians, practitioners, the media, and the general public is a basic understanding of Islamic fundamentalism; specifically, the causes. This is the first quantitative analysis of potential causes of Islamic fundamentalism. I have created a unique data set that contains every Islamic fundamentalist group that is or has been in operation from 1970 through 2008. This fundamentalist data set has a total number of 16,072 fundamentalist movements. I will utilize the negative binomial fixed effects regression model and a comparison of each independent variable’s effect on the number of fundamentalist movements by looking at each independent variable’s minimum, mean, and maximum score. Introduction The field of Conflict Analysis and Resolution is one of the most unique fields found within the social sciences in part because of its inherent multidisciplinary roots where multiple academic schools of thought have found a common objective of analyzing and resolving many types of conflicts. The Matrix of Conflict Analysis and Resolution is growing and its scholarly canon is expanding with great robustness; however, there are voids. One such gap in the literature is research that deals with the causes of Islamic fundamentalism. To fully understand Islamic fundamentalism it is essential that we figure out its potential Volume 19, Number 1 121 Peace and Conflict Studies causes. Islamic fundamentalist movements are inherently anti-system social movements. An anti-system social movement is designed to criticize governmental institutions and the political mainstream while mobilizing disaffected individuals against the existing sociopolitical and socioeconomic institutions. An anti-system fundamentalist movement does this while basing its criticism in religion. Also, anti-system social movements are reactive in nature and occur in reaction to events and forces in the socio-economic, political, and cultural arenas. Islamic fundamentalism forms in reaction to and in defense against the results and consequences of forced assimilation, modernization, industrialization, globalization, Americanization, and westernization, all of which have penetrated the larger Islamic community. There is no consensus as to what causes the rise of Islamic fundamentalism or an explanation as to why some states have more Islamic fundamentalist movements than other states. This article provides preliminary answers by quantitatively measuring an Islamic-majority nation-state’s degree of fundamentalism in relation to conditions which can cause social movement formation. To do this, Islamic fundamentalist movements are treated as social movements. Classic social movement theory consists of four schools of thought: resource mobilization theory, political process theory, Marxist theory, and new social movement theory. The fundamental conditions associated with each classical social movement school of thought have been quantified and are used as independent variables. This article is divided into five parts. First, I look at the causes of Islamic fundamentalism as explained by the existing literature. In the second section, I propose my theory that Islamic fundamentalist movements are inherently social movements and are best explained through an amalgamation of the four classic social movement schools of thought. I also hypothesize that the fundamental conditions associated with each classical school of thought are positively associated with the degree of Islamic fundamentalism. Third, I explain my analytic design and rationale behind using the negative binomial fixed effects regression Volume 19, Number 1 122 Peace and Conflict Studies model and a comparison of each independent variable’s effect on the number of fundamentalist movements by looking at each independent variable’s minimum, mean, and maximum score. The fourth part is an explanation of my data and both independent and dependent variables. As a dependent variable, I used a unique data set that contains every Islamic fundamentalist group that is or has been in operation from 1970 through 2008. The fundamentalist data set I created has a total N (total number of fundamentalist movements) of 16,072. Finally, I explain the results, which indicate a strong correlation between Islamic fundamentalism and the fundamental conditions associated with the classical schools of social movement thought. The Causes of Islamic Fundamentalism Scholars offer five significant reasons explaining the causes of Islamic fundamentalism. First, some argue that worsening economics, unemployment, and poverty facilitate fundamentalism (the socioeconomic arguments). A second prevalent reason found in the literature is that cultural tension between Islam and the West, which is the result of modernization, Westernization, and Americanization, is facilitating fundamentalism. Third, many scholars argue that fundamentalism is a result of the Soviet Empire imploding and the political/social vacuum left in its place. Fourth, some argue that individuals become Islamic fundamentalists in personal times of crisis in order to be closer to God. Fifth, some of the literature explains fundamentalism as the result of a specific catalyst, such as the Palestinian refugee problem, the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the radicalization of Egyptian society, or the assassination of Sadat. The first prevalent argument explains the underpinning causes of Islamic fundamentalism as directly related to socioeconomic issues and assumes that worsening economies facilitate fundamentalism. Chibber (1996) attributes the electoral achievements of fundamentalist political parties to national economic factors. Throughout the Muslim world, Volume 19, Number 1 123 Peace and Conflict Studies organized Muslim extremists have kept states’ infrastructures working during periods of economic hardships or national disaster. There has been much talk about fundamentalism of late. While most people's thought on the topic go to the 9/11 attacks against the United States, or to the ongoing war in Iraq, fundamentalism is affecting science and its relationship to society in a way that may have dire long-term consequences. Of course, religious fundamentalism has always had a history of antagonism with science, and – before the birth of modern science – with philosophy, the age-old vehicle of the human attempt to exercise critical thinking and rationality to solve problems and pursue knowledge. “Fundamentalism” is defined by the Oxford Dictionary of the Social Sciences 1 as “A movement that asserts the primacy of religious values in social and political life and calls for a return to a 'fundamental' or pure form of religion.” In its broadest sense, however, fundamentalism is a form of ideological intransigence which is not limited to religion, but includes political positions as well (for example, in the case of some extreme forms of “environmentalism”). In the United States, the main version of the modern conflict between science and religious fundamentalism is epitomized by the infamous Scopes trial that occurred in 1925 in Tennessee, when the teaching of evolution was challenged for the first time 2,3. That battle is still being fought, for example in Dover, Pennsylvania, where at the time of this writing a court of law is considering the legitimacy of teaching “intelligent design” (a form of creationism) in public schools.

    IDEALISM AND REALISM IN WESTERN AND INDIAN PHILOSOPHIES —Dr. Sohan Raj Tater Over the centuries the philosophical attitude in the west has never been constant but undulated between Idealism and Realism. The difference between these two appears to be irreconcilable, being more or less bound up with the innate difference of predispositions and tendencies varying from person to person. The result is an uncompromising antagonism. The western scholars, who were brought up in the tradition of Kant and Hegel, and who studied Indian philosophies, were more sympathetic towards the Idealistic systems of India. In the 19 th century, there was a predominant wave of monism and scholars like Max Muller were naturally attracted towards the metaphysical views of Sankara etc. and the uncompromising Monism of Vedanta was much admired as the cream of the oriental wisdom. There have been different Idealistic views in Western and Indian philosophies as follows : Western Idealism (i) Platonic Idealism The Idealism of Plato is objective in the sense that the ideas enjoy an existence in a real world independent of any mind. Mind is not antecedent for the existence of ideas. The ideas are there whether a mind reveals them or not. The determination of the phenomenal world depends on them. They somehow determine the empirical existence of the world. Hence, Plato’s conception of reality is nothing but a system of eternal, immutable and immaterial ideas. (ii) Idealism of Berkeley Berkeley may be said to be the founder of Idealism in the modern period, although his arrow could not touch the point of destination.

Since September 11th, the nation’s press, too, has made exclusive coverage of the attack and we have become more familiar with many relevant terms, one of which is Islamic fundamentalism. Radical Islamic fun- damentalism is inherently militant in nature and poses a threat to the new world order that emphasizes democratic values, particularly after the establishment of the Afghan Taliban. Some Western observers, including policy makers, regard Islamic fundamentalism as a more dangerous ideology and political movement than communism after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Radical Islamic fundamentalist groups launched a fierce war against established authority through ter- rorist means such as kidnapping, assassination, and bombing. They not only attacked government offi- cials and buildings, but also kidnapped and assassinated foreign travelers, journalists, and diplomats. Many Western politicians and scholars regard Islamic fundamentalism as a new global threat. The war between communism and the West has been replaced by a new war between the West and Islamic fun- damentalists. The concept of jihad has contemporary relevance as a defensive principle working for human free- dom. Jihad can legitimately be employed for throwing off a foreign yoke-the principle of self-determi- nation that modern international law endorses. We need to bear in mind that interpretations of terms vary according to nations. In this case, terrorism, from the viewpoint of minority ethnic groups or peo- ple from the Third World, is the fight for liberation and freedom.

Two objections are raised against secular fun- damentalism: First, it is premised on a flawed reading of the historical record that assumes religion and democracy are incompatible; second, it falsely assumes a stark division between religious (irrational) and secular (rational) reasons. The article goes on to propound a democratic model of church-state relations, prem- ised on the “twin tolerations” and priority for democracy. Finally, it is suggested that, in certain polities at least, stable democracy may require a religiously coherent rationale. Religious believers who organize collectively and who publicly advance argu- ments that rely on religious premises are often accused of engaging in inher- ently undemocratic political action. This article seeks to refute that charge, arguing instead that regimes that entrench secularism and exclude religious groups from participation in politics are not truly democratic. Should they be labeled Islamic (or Muslim) fundamentalists? Or are they better described as Islamists? The issue has been the subject of a heated debate for two decades. For a while, both general and scholarly usage in America accepted fundamentalism. Islamism emerged in the late 1980s in French academe and then crossed into English, where it eventually displaced Islamic fundamentalism in specialized contexts. More recently, the term Islamism has gained even wider currency, and since September 11, 2001, it may even have established itself as the preferred American usage. Still newer terminology may lie over the horizon. Behind the battle over usage lies another struggle, over the nature of the phenomenon itself. In fact, the two contests, over English usage and analytical understanding, are inseparable. Nor are they free of associations left by past usages. Here follows a short history of changing usage—itself a history of changing Western perceptions of Muslim reality. The Debut of Islamism The term Islamism first appeared in French in the mid­eighteenth century. But it did not refer to the modern ideological use of Islam, which had not yet come into being. Rather, it was a synonym for the religion of the Muslims, which was then known in French as mahométisme, the religion professed and taught by the Prophet Muhammad.

    CHICAGO AND L.A.: A CLASH OF EPISTEMOLOGIES1 Richard Shearmur2 INRS-UCS Université du Québec Québec, Canada Abstract: The Chicago and L.A. Schools of Urban Studies are often contrasted with one another. At one level, the contrast is obvious: studies of late-20th century Los Angeles are clearly going to produce empirical results and observations that differ from studies of early-20th century Chicago. At another level, the contrast reflects a clash of epistemologies. On the one hand, there is a long tradition of urban studies based on the scientific method, and much of this can be traced back to the Chicago School’s pioneering methodological and epistemological explorations. On the other hand, there is a more recent body of research that takes a postmodern approach to knowledge (a type of approach, it can be argued, that continues to underpin the more current cultural turn in geography) first introduced into urban geography by the L.A. School. In this essay, I briefly comment on the empirical differences between L.A. and Chicago research, and show how this leads to the epistemological debate. I then focus my attention on the way in which knowledge is acquired under modern and postmodern stances. I argue that, within the realms of academic research, the “scientific method,” although rejected by postmodernists, often under- pins the research of those who reject it.     The neoclassical school of thought and its rivals Core neoclassical characteristics One reason why neoclassical economics will seem to have something to say about everything is that it is in many ways more a methodological programme than a single theory that can be put to empirical test. We can pick out four core features of neoclassical methodology: methodological individualism, rationality, equilibrium and the importance of the price mechanism. Methodological individualism This is the methodological position that aims to explain all economic phenomena in terms of the characteristics and the behaviour of individuals. Because everything ultimately reduces to what individuals do, methodological individualism states that any theory of how the economy runs should be built up from an understanding of how the individuals within it behave. Its commitment to methodological individualism means that neoclassical economics puts clear boundaries around what it is attempting to explain (since theories cannot explain everything). It does not want to look at the influence of the economy on the characteristics of individuals, on their tastes for example. Rather, it is concerned with the influence of individuals on the economy. So neoclassical economists start their analysis by taking the fundamental characteristics of individual economic agents, such as their tastes, as given. This means that such characteristics are taken either to be fixed and unchanging or, if they do change, this is due to factors that lie outside the economic field of enquiry. In the terms of economic theory, these characteristics are said to be exogenous. Margaret Thatcher’s famous claim that there is no such thing as society, just individuals and families, can be seen as a classic statement of the politics which is often seen to lie behind an approach based on methodological individualism.
