Kata Kunci: Pengembangan, Tabuh tari wali, Sanggar seni ABSTRACT In general, what is meant by percussion has to do with sounding the gamelan. Maybe by hitting, blowing, swiping and others. Tet Port or percussion is interpreted by the sound of gamelan music in a performance, as a supporter of a ceremony or accompaniment of a dance. Specifically in Balinese musical meaning, what is meant by percussion is the result of the artist's ability to achieve a balance of the game in realizing a repertoire (reportoar) to match the soul, taste and purpose of the composition. Beating does not mean the origin of hitting the gamelan following a 92 melody, but hitting the gamelan with all the rules or procedures that have been determined so that the sound of the gamelan can be heard beautifully. The beauty arising from the sound of the gamelan, not only depends on one factor, for example, because the composition of the song is played well, but the beauty occurs due to a balance between the song composition factors, the sound of the gamelan itself including the barrel, the procedures or rules for voicing the gamelan, skills and the artist's ability to animate the song's play. The implementation of religious traditions in the Pupuan Sawah Village is always accompanied by percussion or gamelan to show an aesthetic or beauty and contain the full meaning of sacredness. INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO MELODIC ELABORATION IN CONTEMPORARY TABUH KREASIBARU by PETER MICHAEL STEELE B.A., Pitzer College, 2003 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Music) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA August 2007 © Peter Michael Steele, 2007 ABSTRACT The following thesis has two goals. The first is to present a comparison of recent theories of Balinese music, specifically with regard to techniques of melodic elaboration. By comparing the work of Wayan Rai, Made Bandem, Wayne Vitale, and Michael Tenzer, I will investigate how various scholars choose to conceptualize melodic elaboration in modern genres of Balinese gamelan. The second goal is to illustrate the varying degrees to which contemporary composers in the form known as Tabuh Kreasi are expanding this musical vocabulary. In particular I will examine their innovative approaches to melodic elaboration. Analysis of several examples will illustrate how some composers utilize and distort standard compositional techniques in an effort to challenge listeners' expectations while still adhering to indigenous concepts of balance and flow. The discussion is preceded by a critical reevaluation of the function and application of the western musicological terms polyphony and heterophony. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS Abstract ii Table of Contents : iii List of Tables .... (1990). Although this system was proposed as early as 1972 it has been applied irregularly in writings on the arts, but we have chosen to adhere to it so as to reflect a closer relationship to actual Balinese aksara ‘letters of the alphabet, language’. For instance, many words with prefixes frequently spelled pe or peng are spelled here with the prefixes pa and pang. 1 Introduction These historic recordings were made in 1928 as part of a collection of the first and only commercially–released recordings of music made in Bali prior to World War II. This diverse sampling of new and older Balinese styles appeared on 78 rpm discs in 1929 with subsequent releases for international distribution. The records were sold worldwide (or not sold, as it happened) and quickly went out of print. It was a crucial time in the island’s musical history as Bali was in the midst of an artistic revolution with kebyar as the new dominant style of music.

  • Balinese Gamelan Gong Kebyar
Balinese gamelan gong kebyar A player’s handbook For a Victoria Continuing Education course (2014) supported by the New Zealand School of Music and Gareth Farr History Gong kebyar emerged during a musical revolution in the early 20th century. This was a time of great social change in Bali the local rulers were losing their power and wealth to the invading Dutch, and villagebased music clubs replaced the royal courts as centres of musical activity. Old court gamelan ensembles were melted down and reforged into gong kebyar sets. The refined court music was also reforged into a dynamic and exciting new musical style, and the virtuosic gong kebyar music quickly became popular all over Bali. Why is it called gong kebyar? The word kebyar refers to the irregularly timed unison passages that are sometimes played at the beginning of a composition. You can hear an example in the dance piece called Margapati. Kebyar passages are unique to gong kebyar music, and always start with an explosive, onomatopoeically named byar chord (hence the name keBYAR). Tuning The pitch collection of the gong kebyar ensemble is a 5note mode called pelog selisir, a subset of the 7note Indonesian scale called pelog. The fourth and seventh pelog notes are left out in pelog selisir, which is why gong kebyar music is notated with the numbers 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. Ombak, meaning ‘waves’, is an important feature of gong kebyar tuning. All of the keyed instruments, with the exception of the ugal, are tuned in pairs with one being slightly lower (pengumbang) and one slightly higher (pengisep).

  • 59. Gong Kebyar De Sebatu (Bali) Baris Melampahan
    59. Gong Kebyar de Sebatu (Bali) Baris Melampahan (For Unit 6: Further Musical Understanding) Background information and performance circumstances Gamelan Music is deeply embedded in Indonesian (or Javanese) culture. Evidence of the existence of ensembles dates to the eighth-century BCE but it is believed that the Gamelan may have been in use 500 years earlier. In Javanese mythology, a god, Sang Hyang Guru, used a gong to summon other gods and, for more complex messages, he added extra gongs, thereby inventing the Gamelan. There are now three main types of Gamelan music: Javanese, Balinese and Sundanese; it is Balinese Gamelan (from the Indonesian island of Bali) of which Baris Melampahan is an example. Although Gamelan music on Bali is now regularly performed for tourists, it is vital to remember that the principal and original performing circumstances of the music were for ritual and ceremonial purposes. It is also worth noting that Gamelan belongs to the oral (or perhaps more appropriately ‘aural’) tradition of folk music – notation is a tool for analysing the music but the musicians themselves learn by ear and are taught by an instructor (called a sekaha). The term ‘Baris’ means a line or military formation and, in this context, refers to a traditional male war dance of which there are a great many types. The differing titles usually refer to the weapons used in the dance: for example, Baris Bedil uses rifles and Baris Bajra uses clubs. Baris Melampahan, which developed in the early twentieth-century, is an elaborate exception to the norm of Balinese Baris dances.

I would like to dedicate this work firstly to Sue Achimovich, my mother, without whose constant support I wouldn’t have been able to have jumped across the abyss and onto the path; I would also like to dedicate the work to Dr Saskia Kersenboom who gave me the light and showed me the way; Finally I would like to dedicate the work to both Patrick Eecloo and Guy De Mey who supported me when I could have fallen over the edge … This edition is also dedicated to Jaak Van Schoor who supported me throughout the creative process of this work. Foreword This work has been produced thanks to more than four years of work. The first years involved a great deal of self- questioning; moving from being an active creative artist—a composer and performer of experimental music- theatre—to being a theoretician has been a long journey. Suffice to say, on the gradual process which led to the ‘composition’ of this work, I went through many stages of looking back at my own creative work to discover that I had already begun to answer many of the questions posed by my new research into Balinese culture, communicating remarkable information about myself and the way I’ve attempted to confront my world in a physically embodied fashion. My early academic experiments, attending conferences and writing papers, involved at first largely my own compositional work. What I realise now is that I was on a journey towards developing a system of analysis which would be based on both artistic and scientific information, where ‘subjective’ experience would form an equally valid ‘product’ for analysis: it is, after all, only through our own personal experience that we can interface with the world.

Tabuh Angklung Keklentangan Klasik Oleh: I Gede Yudarta (Dosen PS Seni Karawitan) 1 Pengertian Tabuh Angklung Keklentangan Dalam periodisasi gamelan Bali, Gamelan Angklung tergolong sebagai salah satu tua.
