The experienced playmaker was being groomed to come off the bench to partner Luke Brooks in the halves, with fellow recruit Josh Reynolds to move from five-eighth to hooker. However, the former Bulldog has missed the start of the season with a hamstring injury, forcing Marshall into the starting side. “I’ve got to be honest, it’s been pretty tiring,” he said of his unexpected workload. “Physically, I probably wasn’t ready for that with the interrupted pre-season that I had, having a baby and hurting my calf. “I was only supposed to play 30 or 40 minutes, come on and [Reynolds] was going to go to hooker. That’s obviously changed a bit, but what I have enjoyed is having to step up and trying to take a little bit of the pressure off Luke. He’s been here for a few years with a lot of pressure on his shoulders, but with two options to kick and two options to attack from, I feel I can help relieve a lot of that pressure for him. “The biggest thing – and I learnt this from Wayne (Bennett) at Brisbane – is when you’re happy, you play good footy. I’m just trying to enjoy life off the field here and hopefully try and take that on the field.” NorebuildforRabbitohssaysWalker By MICHAEL BLOK “We’ve got the squad to go combination. Sir Peter Leitch Club Newsletter RLWC 2017 5th October 2017 Only 3 weeks until the first game! #190b C’mon the Kiwis By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan O POINT beating around the bush, and yes I have heard all about Jason Taumalolo, David Fusitu’a and NManu Ma’u, but the Kiwis are my team and you have to get on with it, so onwards and upwards. It’s not like the Aussies aren’t suffering the same thing, with Andrew Fifita opting for Tonga ahead of the Kan- garoos. As I drove home last night Radio Sport was going off, with all sorts of opinions about the North Queensland Cowboy’s decision to play for Tonga ahead of the Kiwis, and then of course with Thursday’s defections, many are arguing the Kiwis are a shambles. Well if they are, they are my shambles, and come October when the ball gets kicked off at Mt Smart I will still be in the stand, and I will still be cheering for the boys. I have had the pleasure of meeting our coach David Kidwell many times, and he is a great bloke, but simpler than that, he is the coach and I will back him to do the best job he can. There are still some real positives for me in the Kiwis side. Simon Mannering is named, and there had been plenty of talk that he would not make it, with the Kiwis opt- ing for a rapid-fire game that might not suit his style.

Sir Peter Leitch Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 21st September 2016 Newsletter #140 By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan RIKEY DID the Vodafone Warriors get hammered at the weekend. The constant theme was that we Cneed a player clearout. That is hardly groundbreaking stuff, but what was, was that players were named. Hugh McGahan singled out Manu Vatuvei and Ben Matulino, arguing both had failed to live up their status as two of our highest paid players. The former Kiwi captain said Warriors coach Stephen Kearney could make a mark by showing the pair the door, and proving to the others that poor performances won't be tolerated. “Irrespective of his standing, Manu Vatuvei has got to go,” McGahan told Tony Veitch. “And again, irre- spective of his standing, Ben Matulino has got to go. They have underperformed. If you're going to make an impact I'd say that's probably the two players that you would look at.” Bold stuff, and fair play to the man, he told it like he saw it. Kearney, on the other hand, clearly doesn’t see it the same way, since he named both in the Kiwis train-on squad, and while he acknowledged they had struggled this year, he backed himself to get the best out of them. In fact he went further, he said it was his job. “That's my responsibility as the coach, to get the individuals in a position so they can go out and play their best.

Of course the Kiwis take on Samoa on Saturday night at Mt Smart, and that one should be a good game too. League legend Olsen Filipaina is taking the ball out, which is pretty cool given he has represented the Kiwis and Samoa. The game I am looking forward to is the Kiwis v Tonga in Hamilton, because there is not going to be a lot of love lost when those two sides meet, after everything that has gone on. Before a ball is kicked I have the Kiwis lunch at the Ellerslie Events Centre to look forward to on Friday. When Pete asked if I would take it on with Gordon Gibbons and Tony Feasey, I foolishly said yes, not want- ing to let Pete down. But in truth Gordon has been amazing and we have an incredible line-up of Kiwis greats taking to the stage, and players with a long history of World Cup and test glory in attendance. I have been to several of Peter’s Kiwis lunches and enjoyed every one of them.

ISure the Newcastle Knights are not exactly firing, but we have all been fans long enough to know this is the sort of the game we used to cock-up, especially when, as we were, we were coming off the back of a good win the week before. So it was an absolute delight that we won a game we bloody-well should of. And did we, or did we not, win with a display that was pretty ruthless? Having said that, I had a sinking nervous feeling going into halftime that if we let the Knights score first, we might give them the shot in the arm they so badly needed. Turned out it was all one-way traffic in the second spell, particularly down David Fusitu’a’s side.
