Heartfelt thanks to the Dharug community who so generously took me into their ‘cultural hearts’ when I arrived on their doorstep as a ‘Dharug two-year old.’ Without the generosity and inclusivity of Aunty Sandra and Terri Lee, I may well have wandered off track and never known the profound insights that the last 10 years have provided. Even more directly, I am deeply indebted to the Dharug women who have supported this project, contributed to it with their stories, their love, their patience (after all I was culturally only a five-year-old then), and in the process, they have woven me into their worlds. I sincerely hope that this ‘basket-of-knowledges’ and all the years of work involved can contribute to saying ‘thank you’ to you all, truly together creating our Seven Sistas. More broadly, several other Dharug community members have offered appreciated wisdom along the way, particularly Uncle Lex Dadd, Uncle Colin Locke, Dr Shane Smithers and Uncle Chris Tobin. At the same time, I wish to acknowledge my profound appreciation for the supervisory assistance and overall warm support given me by my three Macquarie University mentors. First, my Principal Supervisor, Associate Professor Neil Harrison, without whose assistance, patience, tips, diplomacy and good humour over the several years of this candidature, this work would never have been woven. Second, in that weaving and particularly for her enthusiasm and sensitive insights into human and non-human relationships, particularly through her own weavings with Bawaka Country in the Northern Territory, Australia, and her Yolngu sisters belonging there, my Assistant Supervisor, Associate Professor Sandie Suchet-Pearson. Third, for her community guidance, supportive encouragement and steady hand at the writing helm of the thesis, I wish to sincerely thank Dr Leanne Holt, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy), Macquarie University. I dedicate this thesis to Daniel Rey (1958 – 2007) Always in my heart and walking beside me 4 Abstract Country Tracking Voices is a thesis that for the first time brings seven Dharug women’s voices to the written scholarship and broader academy. It is centered in the Australian Aboriginal belief that we belong and are obligated to caring for Country as it is the source of all species’ wellbeing and survival. The thesis engages with how seven Dharug custodians are continuing cultural practices, sharing Dharug knowledges and employing Dharug ways of caring, connecting and belonging. When Dharug Country covers the majority of Sydney, Australia, this thesis contributes knowledges for resilience and renewal to benefit all sentient beings. The ways of practicing Dharug culture today are diverse, educational and positive. They include puppetry, the visual arts, singing, dancing, possum-skin work, weaving, story-telling and poetry, as well as through customary ceremonies and practices. Equally the ways of undertaking research are diverse. This thesis challenges customary thesis methodologies by including the influence of other-than-humans in the research process. By recognizing the agency of Country, this research is able to acknowledge participant voices of birds, possums, and sandstone. It also positions the research method as ‘Goanna walking’, de-composes human-centricity and repositions us to the more sustainable place of being only one within a profound web of interconnectivity. What also makes this project unique is that for more than 200 years Dharug people, Country, practices and values have been talked about by others. In this thesis, we talk back. This project is not a representation of all Dharug people. It is instead a beginning. The signatures on the petition were mainly collected at two events that were held in Marrickville during April and May 2018. These events were the Anzac Day Reflection held on 25 April 2018 in Richardson’s Lookout – Marrickville Peace Park and the National Sorry Day Walk along the Cooks River via a number of Indigenous Interpretive Sites on 26 May 2018. The purpose of the petition is to creatively showcase the history and culture of the local Aboriginal community along the Cooks River and to publicly acknowledge the role of Pemulwuy as “father of local Aboriginal resistance”. The action petitioned for was expressed in the following terms: “We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge Inner West Council in conjunction with Council’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Reference Group (A&TSIRG) to designate the walk between the Aboriginal Interpretive Sites along the Cooks River parks in Marrickville as the Pemulwuy Trail and produce an information leaflet to explain the sites and the Aboriginal connection to the Cooks River (River of Goolay’yari).” A total of 60 signatures have been collected on the petition attached.

Language centres: keeping language strong Anna Ash, Pauline Hooler, Gary Williams and Ken Walker1 Abstract We begin by describing the history and main activities of Muurrbay Aboriginal Language and Culture Co-operative and Many Rivers Aboriginal Language Centre. Comments from Elders, language teachers and researchers are included to reflect the opinions of a diverse range of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. We discuss some aspects of research, publishing, language education and information technology. Finally we make some recommendations for groups who are just starting out on this challenging but rewarding road. This volume was at least partially inspired by The green book of language revitalization in practice. There is a chapter in that book called ‘Diversity in Local Language Maintenance and Restoration: A Reason for Optimism’. It emphasises that there is a positive future for the revitalisation of Aboriginal languages: There is reason for optimism because local language communities all over the world are taking it upon themselves to act on behalf of their imperilled linguistic traditions in full understanding of, and in spite of, the realistic perception that the cards are stacked against them. There is, in effect an international movement in which local communities work in defiance of the forces pitted against their embattled languages. It has something of the character of a modern miracle, if you think about it – while they share the goal of promoting a local language, these groups are essentially independent of one another, coming together sometimes to compare notes, but operating in effective separation. Protocols are simply the ways in which you work with people, and communicate and collaborate with them appropriately. They are a guide to assist you with ways in which you can work, communicate and collaborate with the Indigenous community of Western Sydney. A wealth of Indigenous protocols documentation already exists (see Section 9), but to date the practice of following them is not widespread. Protocols are also standards of behaviour, respect and knowledge that need to be adopted. You might even think of them as a code of manners to observe, rather than a set of rules to obey.

    HENS LAY, PEOPLE LIE A Novel and an Exegesis Beyond Epistolarity: The Warp, the Weft and the Loom Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Glenice Joy Whitting Swinburne University of Technology Faculty of Higher Education, Lilydale 2012 Abstract This thesis is comprised of two components: 'Hens Lay, People Lie', a novel, and an exegesis, Beyond Epistolarity the Warp, the Weft and the Loom. Together they propose that 'creative epistolarity', namely imaginative writing with factual material, including personal letters, emails and journals, provides women with a safe space where knowledge can be intuited, articulated or performed. In this space, women find their own creative voice, write their stories and in turn, understand themselves. 'Hens Lay, People Lie' draws heavily on the epistolary genre but aims to move beyond that genre by using an auto/biographical and creative epistolary style better suited to reveal emotion and character. The novel illustrates that creative epistolarity intersects with feminism and postmodernism and is uniquely placed to empower women to write their stories. The exegesis discusses theories, methodologies, fictional techniques and creative decisions made during the writing of the novel. Key writerly choices are examined: the choice of an epistolary novel and the importance of creative epistolarity as a way of knowing the self as well as production of knowledge. The research process is practice-led research informed by personal correspondence and personal history in the autoethnographic mode. The exegesis presents a reflective examination of existing works in the genre of epistolary fiction and calls on the practices of exponents of the epistolary form such as Elizabeth Jolley, Nancy Turner and Lionel Shriver.

    The Working-Class Experience in Contemporary Australian Poetry A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Sarah Attfield BCA (Hons) University of Technology, Sydney August 2007 i Acknowledgements Before the conventional thanking of individuals who have assisted in the writing of this thesis, I want to acknowledge my class background. Completing a PhD is not the usual path for someone who has grown up in public housing and experienced childhood as a welfare dependent. The majority of my cohort from Chingford Hall Estate did not complete school beyond Year 10. As far as I am aware, I am the only one among my Estate peers to have a degree and definitely the only one to have attempted a PhD. Having a tertiary education has set me apart from my peers in many ways, and I no longer live on the Estate (although my mother and old neighbours are still there). But when I go back to visit, my old friends and neighbours are interested in my education and they congratulate me on my achievements. When I explain that I’m writing about people like them – about stories they can relate to, they are pleased. The fact that I can discuss my research with my family, old school friends and neighbours is really important. If they couldn’t understand my work there would be little reason for me to continue. My life has been shaped by my class. It has affected my education, my opportunities and my outlook on life. I don’t look back at the hardship with a fuzzy sense of nostalgia, and I will be forever angry at the class system that held so many of us back, but I am proud of my working-class family, friends and neighbourhood.

    Colonial Signals of Port Jackson by Ralph Kelly Abstract This lecture is about the role signal flags played in the early colonial life of Sydney. I will look at some remarkable hand painted engraved plates from the 1830s and the information they have preserved as to the signals used in Sydney Harbour. Vexillological attention has usually focused on flags as a form of iden - tity for nations and entities or symbol for a belief or idea, but flags are also used to convey information. When we have turned our attention to signal flags, the focus has been on ship to ship signals 1, but the focus of this paper will be on shore to shore harbour signals and the unique system that developed in early Sydney to provide information on shipping arrivals in the port. These flags played a vital role in the life and commerce of the colony from its foundation until the early 20th Century. The Nicholson Chart The New South Wales Calendar and General Post Office Directory 1832 included infor - mation on the Flagstaff Signals in Sydney, including a coloured hand-painted en - graved chart of the Code of Signals for the Colony. 2 This chart was prepared by John 3 Figure 1. naval signals 1 Nicholson, Harbour Master for Sydney’s Port Jackson. It has come to be known as the Nicholson Chart and is one of the foundation docu - ments of Australian vexillology. 4 The primary significance of the chart to vexillologists has been that this is the earliest known illustration of what was described on the chart as the N.S.W.
