Read collection overview Established in 1968 in response to the in Vietnam, the AFSC office in did not limit its focus to draft and military counseling, instead the organization broadened its focus over time to include educational and outreach programs for a variety of and socal justice issues. Closing in 2017, the chapter focused on economic justice, campaigns against U.S. military intervention, and actions to combat racism and classism. With an emphasis on serving the community of western Massachusetts, the program wss equally committed to calling attention to issues of both national and local importance. Campaigns ranged from ending the war in Iraq and supporting peace in Columbia to preventing the construction of a new jail in Chicopee.

The collection consists chiefly of subject files that together provide a picture of the various issues in which the western Massachusetts AFSC was involved. Topics range from the organization's earliest focus, the , to the first Gulf War, landlord/tenant relations, immigration, and landmines. The collection also includes materials relating to public figures, some of whom traveled to the region to speak.

Activists--Massachusetts Massachusetts--Economic conditions Peace movements--Massachusetts Social justice--Massachusetts Background on American Friends Service Committeea The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is a grassroots community action and education organization dedicated to understanding and addressing the root causes of , injustice, oppression, suffering, and war. The organization and its many regional offices work for peace and social justice both domestically and globally. Although there are no legal ties between the organizations, AFSC is guided by the values and principles of the Religious Society of Friends (), including AFSC logo respecting the goodness in all people and asserting the transformative powers of love and . Originally founded in 1917, the organization quickly took on a broad number of issues, and won the Nobel Peace Prize (along with the British Friends Service Council) in 1947 – on behalf of all Quakers – for peace work and specifically its help with refugees, conscientious objectors, and relief and reconstruction in the wake of the two major world .

A later war, in Vietnam, was the catalyst for the creation of the Western Massachusetts American Friends Service Committee (WMA AFSC) in 1968. Founder Frances Crowe was active in the Vietnam protest movement and in draft and military counseling, and because of her energy as a broadminded activist and founding leader, the WMA AFSC office in Northampton, MA grew exponentially. Under Crowe and others, the group worked for a broad range of peace and social justice issues, including early on for Latin American solidarity, the nuclear freeze movement, and against South African apartheid. A number of program coordinators made their mark on the organization in collaboration with and after Crowe, including:

Anna Megesyi, who brought the national youth program Help Increase the Peace Project to the region; Jo Comerford, whose tenure overlapped with a surge of activity in the wake of the attacks of September 11, 2001; Doug Renick and then his co-program coordinator Maya Winfrey, who continued the broad work of the organization as well as emphasis on long-standing programming such as the remembrance of the and Nagasaki bombings and Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations; and Jeff Napolitano, who helped lead the office through difficult financial times to renew and recommit to peacebuilding, social change, and grassroots organizing across communities and organizations in western Massachusetts. For almost 50 years the leaders, members, and countless volunteers, advocates, and program attendees of the WMA AFSC dedicated their efforts to intergenerational education and activism on behalf of the social justice causes effecting their communities in western Massachusetts, but also to issues of national and international importance. Recent areas of focus included economic justice, campaigns against U.S. military intervention and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and actions to combat racism, classism, and the prison-industrial-complex. Officially closing its offices on September 30, 2017, due to major budgetary shortfalls at the ASFC National Office, the WMA AFSC made its mark not only by initiating change and understanding in numerous areas, but also by leaving an active legacy living in the people of the organization and those they worked with over the years. Through these individuals and their communities, the work of WMA AFSC will live on and expand, into other social justice organizations, programing, protests and personal acts of kindness, support, and solidarity.

Scope of collection The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) Records primarily document the activities and concerns of the Western Massachusetts AFSC (WMA AFSC) office, located in Northampton, MA. The majority of the collection consists of subject files, which together provide a picture of the various issues in which the office was involved. Topics range from the organization's earliest focus, the Vietnam War, to the Gulf and Iraq wars, landlord/tenant relations, immigration, international solidarity and peace-work, race and class issues, and youth leadership programming. The breadth of topics is impressive, and the organization of content and specific folders under larger thematic topics is retained from the original order. The subject files are diverse in content as well as theme, ranging from newspaper clippings and promotional materials to meeting minutes, planning materials, correspondence, and reports. The collection also includes documentation relating to public figures, some of whom traveled to the region to speak, in separately marked people files. A small amount of organizational materials includes administrative and resources files from WMA AFSC and other AFSC offices, photograph albums, and AFSC publications.
