The collection includes his 1940s correspondence with early gay activist pioneers and Frank McCourt as well as his 1950s and 1960s correspondence with ONE Incorporated. Scope and Contents Correspondence, writings, and subject files of Manuel boyFrank, 1916-1984. The correspondence comprises letters written to and by boyFrank, including correspondence with Henry Gerber, Frank McCourt, and ONE Incorporated. The writings consist of unpublished stories written by boyFrank. The subject files consist of clippings, transcribed texts from published materials, correspondence, photographs, and notes and writings by boyFrank on various topics. Biography Manuel boyFrank was born on May 21, 1900, and raised in Oklahoma. Official records list him as Manuel Boyfrank, ONE Incorporated records list him as Monwell Boyfrank, and occasional correspondence has him using Manuel Boy Frank or Manuel boy Frank; however, he most commonly signed his correspondence as Manuel boyFrank. boyFrank served overseas in World War I, then remained enlisted in the armed forces with stints in the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard until retiring, line-of-duty-disabled, in 1940. boyFrank went to New York in 1930 where he met gay activist pioneers Henry Gerber and Frank McCourt, but upon his retirement in 1940, he moved to Southern California where he remained until the final years of his life. He held various jobs in Southern California before joining the Los Angeles Civil Service, from which he retired in 1965. boyFrank became a Vice President on the board of ONE Incorporated in 1964 and remained an officer until 1968. boyFrank died January 13, 1982. Correspondence Series 1. 1940-1980 Scope and Contents Correspondence Manuel boyFrank maintained with various people and organizations, 1940-1980. Included are the exchanges between boyFrank and Henry Gerber, Frank McCourt, and ONE Institute. Legends created by an unknown source, presumably after boyFrank's death, exist for both the Gerber and McCourt correspondences. Arrangement The correspondence is arranged in alphabetical order by the topic, organization, or last name of the correspondent. Correspondence organized by date is listed first, while unattributed correspondence is listed at the end of the series.

Box 1, Folder 11 Gabel, Mrs. A.H. 1946 Box 1, Gerber, Henry 1940-1957 Folder 12-24 Physical Description: [13 folders] Scope and Contents Folder 12 contains two legends to the correspondence. The first legend contains brief descriptions of the content of each letter. The second legend contains the salutation, location, date, and signature of each letter as well as notes regarding how the letter was written (e.g. typescript, handwritten) and on what type of paper. Folders 13-21 comprise correspondence in the order as listed in the second legend. Folder 22 contains miscellaneous Gerber writings. Folder 23 contains copies of letters Gerber wrote to various periodicals. Folder 24 contains duplicate copies of letters. Although the folders have new box and folder numbers in the upper righthand corner, the original folder numbers as listed in the second legend (ex. f4, f5, f6, etc...) have been retained on the folders for identification purposes. Note that folders 22 and 23 have original folder numbering which is not represented in the second legend. Folders 12 and 24 have no original folder numbering.

Box 1, McCourt, Frank 1940-1948 Folder 31-36 Physical Description: [6 folders] Scope and Contents Folder 31 contains two legends to the correspondence. The first legend provides brief descriptions of the content of the letters from 1947-1948. The second legend mostly provides content descriptions of the Gerber/boyFrank correspondence, but does list two probable Gerber/McCourt correspondences. Folder 32 contains correspondence between boyFrank and Contacts listing #1744 "Frank." Although no definitive link ties this Frank to Frank McCourt, this 1940s correspondence immediately predates known correspondence with Frank McCourt later that year. Folders 33-35 contains chronologically arranged correspondence between McCourt and boyFrank. The correspondence includes boyFrank's acceptance letter as a member of the United States Rocket Society Inc. (McCourt was the Senior Rocketeer and Vice President of the Manhattan Chapter). The correspondence also includes discussions of gay contemporaries, including Henry Gerber. Folder 36 contains one undated letter each written by McCourt to R. WL Deagan, Henry Gerber, and Al [no last name given].

Box 1, Folder 37 Media 1946-1947 Scope and Contents Includes correspondence with Manchester Boddy, editor of an unspecified publication, as well as letters to the editors of Newsweek, Times-Herald [Washington, D.C.], National Defense, and the American Mercury.

Box 1, Folder 38 Metts, Jas A. 1954 Scope and Contents Discusses ONE Magazine.

Box 2, Folder 1 Neill, Alexander Sutherland, Dr. 1947-1948 Box 7, Folder 2-4 ONE Incorporated 1957-1970 Physical Description: [3 folders] Scope and Contents Correspondence written from 1957-1964 primarily consists of letters written by boyFrank addressed generically to ONE. Correspondence written from 1964-1968 include letters written by and to boyFrank as an active member in ONE. Many of the letters are signed by W. Dorr Legg and most concern the ongoing dispute between W. Dorr Legg and Don Slater over leadership of ONE. The few letters written after 1968 discuss ONE's ventures after boyFrank left ONE as an active member.

Box 2, Folder 5-8 Publishing, manuscripts and periodicals 1947-1980 Physical Description: [4 folders] Scope and Contents Folder 5 discusses various boyFrank publishing proposals. The correspondents include Ella Barton Foote, Edward [no last name], John Storck of the Library Research Institute, G. Legman, literary agent Lambert Wilson, Leslie Laird Winston, George E. Anding, Samson T. Sabalones of the Foreign Service of the Philippines, Albert Eglash, Robbie Appel, and the Gay Academic Union in Hollywood. Folders 6-8 discuss boyFrank's plan to publish a periodical entitled Hearth. The correspondents include Hal Call, H. Latta Pinkerton Jr., Harold Leppiet, H. Stanley Hutchins, R.M. Jones, the Philippine Consolute General, the Wall Street Journal, B.J. Barron, Matt Weinstock, and letters to "Tony" and "Will" on Hearth letterhead. Folder 8 contains a rough mockup of a proposed issue of Hearth.
