n September 30, the church celebrates the feast of St. . He was a renowned scripture scholar and Ois known for his Latin translation of the Bible, called the Vulgate, which he completed in the year 405. The famous quote, “Ignorance of Scripture is Ignorance of Christ,” is attributed to St. Jerome. His dedication to the Sacred Scripture must inspire in us devout attention to the word of God.

Dei Verbum (1965), the document of the Second Vatican Council on divine revelation, which is called a dogmatic constitution, refers to the Scripture as “words of God, expressed in human language” (DV, 13). It emphasizes two points. First, it means that the Bible is the Word of God. “Those divinely revealed realities which are contained and presented in Sacred Scripture have been committed to writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit” (DV, 11). Secondly, it means that the believing communities and the human authors too have played a vital role in the development of It is very important for us as Christians that we nourish the Scripture. “Christus Vivit” is Latin for “Christ is alive!” It is the title of the Apostolic Exhortation Pope Francis wrote after the Youth Synod held in in October 2018. The Pope signed the Document on 25 March 2019. This series brings the main insight of Christus Vivit to the readers of Voice of Delhi, particularly to the youth.

here are numerous youth groups and movements in the Church today, which, TPope Francis says, are “the work of the Holy Spirit who constantly shows us new paths.” The Pope wants the whole Church to be involved in the evangelization of young people. But he wants young people themselves to take a greater role in the Church’s pastoral outreach to the young (CV 202).

The Pope wants young people to be real agents of youth ministry in the Church, not just its beneficiaries. The Church needs to help and guide the youth but at the same time they must be given the freedom “to develop new approaches, with creativity and a certain audacity.” The Pope is concerned that we help “young people to use their insight, ingenuity instruction in religious and moral values and must be helped to learn and knowledge to address the issues and ways of praying and practising the faith in contemporary society (CV concerns of other young people in their own 221). Education is not just preparation for well-paid jobs. It must lead language” (CV 203). the young people to true wisdom that will help them live authentic lives in the world. All too often we are conditioned by trivial and fleeting There is big difference between the ways of the models of life that drive us to pursue cheap success that does not value young and the elderly. Young people want “new sacrifices in life. True education makes us question wrong values. It styles and new strategies” in the pastoral field, encourages us to pursue meaning in life (CV 223). whereas “adults often worry about having everything properly planned, with regular Young people need contemplative experiences. The Pope points out that meetings and fixed times.” Therefore the “in many settings, young Catholics are asking for prayer opportunities Pope says: “Youth ministry needs to become and sacramental celebrations capable of speaking to their daily lives more flexible: inviting young people to events through a fresh, authentic and joyful liturgy.” He says further: “We or occasions that provide an opportunity not should never underestimate the ability of young people to be open to only for learning, but also for conversing, contemplative prayer.” Youth ministry must support young people celebrating, singing, listening to stories and who seek such contemplative experiences by providing them with experiencing a shared encounter with the living opportunities and guidance. We must make maximum use of the great God” (CV 204). But at the same time the Pope moments of the liturgical year like the Holy Week, Pentecost and wants us to retain existing practices that have Christmas to provide them with opportunities that help them experience proved to be fruitful. “What is important is that the joy of faith (CV 224). we make use of everything that has borne good Youth ministry and Christian service go hand in hand. 12 The Voice of Delhi WHAT’S IN WHATSAPP STATUS?

Fr. Arokiya Raj J I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. (John. 11:25) “Be at the Movies” IN LOVING MEMORY OF After a very tiring day, some people turn to the smell of popcorn or delicious snacks in a dark room with a huge screen and that at times turn out to be the most relaxing thing in the world. Movies combine various arts. Simply watching a movie can be a way of appreciating art and heightening our cultural awareness. When we watch a movie, we are not just entertained but we also learn about the world and ourselves. We can learn a lot about certain moments in time or certain perceptions of moments in time through movies. Like books, they give us a different perspective on things and help us to develop alternative perceptions on reality. They do contain some great similarities to real-life situations. They can shape the way we are making sense of the world we are living. Movies also inspire social change due to their ability to teach us about experiences outside our own perspective; they can inspire empathy and raise relevant question on life, human experiences and the reality at large. So movies have provocative power in them. They almost take our mind off almost everything that disturbs us and reduce stress and energize us. They provide an opportunity to identity ourselves with Mrs. Matilda Nazareth a few characters in them and motivate and inspire us to learn from those characters ideas and things that W/o George Nazareth will enable us to live our life to our fullest potential. They help us to connect ourselves with communities, Sister of Archbishop Vincent culture, current happenings, creation, cosmos and they lead us to contribute to positive social change and Emeritus archbishop of delhi personal transformation. They are a good means for socialization as well. A good movie can bring back the lost hope. Born : 16-05-1944 So once the Corona pandemic situation changes and things get normal, plan your next visit to the cinema, Married : 05-06-1977 book a ticket, and enjoy the magic of a movie. If you Died : 26-08-2020 don’t want to wait longer you can watch movies on your mobiles, laptops and tablets. They are just in your hands. Relax and let yourself be lost in the story and get inspired, enriched and energized. A loving tribute from: So ‘Be at the Movies!’ George Nazareth, Glenn Nazareth, Happy Movie Time! here is nothing as great as the Eucharist. If God had something more precious, he would give to us". “Do not try to please "Teverybody, try to please God, the Angels and the Saints, they are your public". - St. John Mary Vianney

In the evening of Tuesday, August 4, 2020 we celebrated the feast of St. John Mary Vianney who is the patron of the parish. The members of parish council, along with Rev.Fr. Savariraj, the parish priest decided not to have grand celebration this year due to COVID-19. Though it is a small parish but every parishioner has a major role to make the parish a vibrant one. The statue of St. John Mary Vianney and the altar was decorated beautifully by Sr. Saguntala and Sr. Cecilia OSM. The solemn holy mass was celebrated by Fr. Savariraj. Fr. Savariraj, in his heart touching homily, highlighted the life of St. John Mary Vianney and he also spoke on the love and devotion that many people have towards Jesus through St. John Mary Vianney. Father also shared that he has visited the place of Ars where people of Ars still have great faith and devotion for the great saint. A short introduction on the life of St. John Mary Vianney was read out by Mrs. Madhuri. As St. John Mary Vianney is patron of priests so a special prayer was offered for all the priests of our diocese and all over the world who are serving the people with total dedication and commitment and also offering the Holy Eucharist celebration daily. The choir with their melodious voice led the congregation into the spirit of prayer. The mass ended by singing a hymn to St. John Mary Vianney, praising and thanking for his great work done during his life time. Soon after the mass, refreshments were served.

CCBI Youth Commission National Consultative Body Meeting of Young People Percival Holt, Advisor & Full Timer

23rd August 2020, Bethania Faridabad:The National Youth Commission of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) organised the Annual Consultative Body meeting of National Youth Leaders of various Catholic Youth Movements in India on 23rd August 2020 virtually via Google Meet. The meeting was chaired by Rev. Fr. Chetan Machado (Executive Sec- retary). Participants included two young representatives from various youth movements such as ICYM, YCS/YSM, YU4C, Salesian Youth Movement, Jesus Youth, St. Vincent De Paul Society (SSVP) and Focolare among/ the many catholic youth movements in India along with the Advisory Board of the commission and special invitees. This annual meeting aims to deliberate on the present scenario of youth ministry, exchange of ideas, current concerns and needs of young people, collaboration between the many youth movements in India and therefore to discuss the further plan of action for the National Youth Commission which is the umbrella body for all catholic youth activities in the country. Amidst the many discussions, some of the highlighted concerns that emerged were the psychological and mental wellbeing of young people, particularly, in this year of uncertainty, the alarming need to inculcate the virtue of hope in young people, increased awareness and sensitivity on social and public matters, modeling them to stand for social justice & truth, dire need of more role models in different spheres, sharing available resources, career and future guidance, job & financial sta- bility, promoting higher education and professional goals in catholic young people. Some of the major proposals from this forum were training young people on crisis management & integral human devel- opment, focused spiritual & catechetical formation to clear the misconceptions about church teachings, joining hands by promoting each other (movements) in the different ventures and charisms, creating a group of leaders of movements to share and collaborate youth ministry better, more combined meetings of different movements to explore collaboration & networking. Earlier today, the advisory board met to reflect on the growth and future goals of the commission. Some of the plans elu- cidated are national and international exchange programmes to give more exposure to diverse cultures and spirituality of young people. Members also suggested to use social media/ AV& digital platforms for virtual formation programmes & to spread the thrusts of ministry among church communities; to identify and address concerns of local communities, explore next step collaboration with secular and established organizations based on the cause/concern for more concrete outcomes, appreciate and acknowledge the achievements of young people in public domains in order to motivate them and inspire others; a shift in approach from group building to one-on-one assistance with the help of virtual platforms. Rev. Fr. Stephen Alathara (Deputy Secretary General of CCBI) in his remarks made three requests to all the young lead- ers –Respond to any crisis positively; Collaborate, network & work together for the common good of young people; Think creatively, bring forth new ideas and innovative concepts, take the charism and vision one step ahead.

Just One Step

I used to run the 800m race back in school. And in one particular race I was way behind. But I was running at a steady pace I thought. Slowly I felt the crowd around me was getting thinner.

Then I had just two more bends before we reach the finish line and I had one more guy ahead of me.

I was delighted that I had enough in my tank to get past him. That was the first time I won a race like that. But then I found a liking for the marathons.

The Half Marathon in Delhi back in 2015 maybe the last race I ran. There’s this technique I figured out.

Till the time I am not tired, things are fine but the moment fatigue tends to set in, I try looking for a target. It’s not the finish line I think about. I look at the tree 100 m ahead, then the signpost 100 m ahead, then the building 100m ahead.

These small targets I figured are a great help me in staying the course. A priest who used to be in the Nagpur seminary, Fr. Noel Molloy used to say look at the next lamp post. Then the next and so on.

Even in test cricket when there’s a huge target to be chased, they talk about just winning the session.

This may be the oldest trick in the book but it sure works everytime. And maybe now more than ever we need it.

We may be facing a lot of challenges in many areas of our life. What is that one step we can take?

If we are struggling in our spiritual life, what are the small steps I can take. If we want to grow in a field, what is the little I can learn today. If my relationships need to strengthen, what are the small acts I can do.

It starts there. And hopefully once we see the good fruit it bears, we shall keep it going. When we know that Jesus has our back, it should help us be fearless and go for it even if setbacks come our way.

Jesus choose the 12 and today through them, His message of love has been proclaimed in so many countries. There’s more work to be done, sure. And we are reminded each time as the Mass ends. But even God started small in that sense and continuous to do great things through His people.

Give your dreams and ambitions and aspirations to Jesus. And see what are the tiny things you need to do to attain them. Break down your big goals into small steps.

And take them everyday.

One step at a time.

September 2020 37 Rev. Fr. Augustine Benedict Kuriapilly

Rev. Fr. Augustine Kuriapilly was born on 7th May 1943 at North Parur, District, Kerala to Late Mr. Xavier and Late Mrs. Anna. He belonged to the Parish of Our Lady of Dolours Manjaly of Verapoly Archdiocese, Kerala. He was born in a family of four with one brother and two sisters. He is survived by his one elder sister and one younger brother who are residing in Kerala. They could not be present here with us today due to their age and the present Covid-19 pandemic situation.

Fr. Augustine did his elementary education from St. , Alwaye and High School Education from St. Albert’s High School, Ernakulam. Fr. Kuriapilly did his graduation from SFS College, Nagpur. In 1959, he joined St. Joseph’s Seminary, Ernakulam. He completed both his philosophical and theological studies from St. Charles Seminary, Nagpur.

I would like to give to all present here, a glimpse of his journey in Delhi Catholic Archdiocese for the past 50 years. He was ordained a priest at the age of 27 in Sacred Heart Cathedral, New Delhi on 1st November 1970 by Late Archbishop Angelo Fernandes. He was initially appointed in Sacred Heart Cathedral for some time and then in the following year 1971, he was appointed as Asst. Parish Priest of St. Paul’s Church, Delhi Cant. He was once again appointed as Asst. Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Cathedral in 1972 and served the parish till 1975. From 1975- 78 he was the Asst. Parish Priest of St. Mary’s Church, Old Delhi. In 1978, for 1 year he was appointed as Asst. Parish Priest of the Church of Our Lady of Health, Masihgarh, Okhla and in 1979, he was given the responsibility of Priest In-charge of Kalyan Puri. From 1985-91, he served as Priest In-charge of Hari Nagar. From 1991-96, he was appointed as Parish Priest of Holy Spirit Church, Alaknanda. From 1996-98, he was appointed as the Director for Communication. Then he took a sabbatical leave and worked as a member of the Pastoral team at St. Francis Hospital, New York. There, he did Diploma in Pastoral Counseling. On his return in 2002, he was appointed as Parish Priest of St. Sebastian’s Church, Dilshad Garden and in 2003, he was appointed as Parish Priest of St. Luke’s Church, Defence Colony where he serviced for 2 years. In 2005, he resigned from his pastoral ministry and he was away from the Diocese till 2011, staying at Kuriapilly House, , Kerala where he completed 3 Diploma courses i.e, Personality Development, Homiletic and Community Building. In 2011, he returned to the Diocese and stayed for a year at St. Paul’s Church, Delhi Cantt. In 2012, he went to Clergy Home for a retired life.

After 3 years of his stay at Clergy Home, in 2015, he developed chronic kidney disease and he was on hemodialysis from Holy Family Hospital since 13th March 2015. On 16th July 2020 with complaints of shortness of breath, Fr. Kuriapilly got admitted in the ICU of Holy Family Hospital. On 17th July 2020 at 4.00pm, he got shifted to the ward but on the same day by 6.15pm, he became unresponsive and his vital organs were non-recordable. CPR was given and was shifted to ICU where he was put on ventilator. On 21st July 2020, his pulse rate significantly dropped down to 30beats/minute. Since the time of his admission to the Hospital, he underwent 21 hemodialysis. By 12.10am of the midnight of 30th August 2020, he got desaturated and there was a significant drop in his heart rate. CPR was given to him but could not revive and he drew his last breath at 12.40am at the age of 77. Despite all measures taken by doctors, we lost our dear Fr. Augustine Kuriapilly, who was a talented priest of Archdiocese of Delhi. Fr. Augustine Kuriapilly was the founder of Voice of Delhi, the monthly magazine of the Archdiocese of Delhi. This work par excellence of Fr. Kuriapilly is being carried forward till date. We cannot forget his efforts in writing a beautiful book titled “Like a Mustard Seed”, a book on the history of the Archdiocese of Delhi. We will miss you dear Fr. for everything - may it be your artistic talent or your oratory excellence or your intellectual skills.

Fr. Kuriapilly expressed his great desire to have a grand celebration with all of us of the Golden Jubilee of his Priestly Ordination but the Almighty God in His own plan called Fr. Augustine Kuriapilly to celebrate his Golden Jubilee with Him in paradise.

We will always remember you Fr. for all your contribution in serving the Archdiocese of Delhi for the past 50 years. Though you have undergone untold pain and trauma in past many years but you bore this pain with all determination and strength.

Fr. we respect your wishes and sentiments of your last will where you have expressed your desire to have the Holy Mass and the Homily at the funeral mass to be based on Priesthood and the pastoral ministry. We will remember you Fr. in our prayers, imploring the good Lord to grant you unbounded happiness and everlasting union with Jesus Christ, our Lord and Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother.

“Eternal Rest, Grant Unto him O Lord and Let Your Perpetual Light shine upon him and May his soul Rest in Peace.

Amen!”
