We are grateful for this support that we believe will take the fest to the next level, validating the hard work of the Loft staff, Board of Directors and volunteers! One of our most exciting new projects is LOFT FILM FEST ON THE ROAD. We are the first American member of the Solar World Cinema network, which takes unique films to unusual places in 17 countries around the world. The Loft Film Fest on the Road will take select films from the festival to underserved urban and rural areas throughout Southern Arizona. We have a van outfitted with solar panels and lined with batteries to use the sun to power the projector and sound system and inflate the screen, making it possible for us to take films literally anywhere! Thank you to Technicians for Sustainability for donating the equipment and installation of the solar panels and batteries! We want to thank our title sponsor Desert Diamond Casinos and Entertainment for their continuing support for the festival, and Loft Film Fest on the Road, helping us increase the impact and outreach of the fest. Thank you to everyone who attended the Loft Film Fest 2016, and save the date NOVEMBER 8 – 12, 2017 for the 8th annual Loft Film Fest! 2 THE SEVENTH ANNUAL LOFT FILM FEST The seventh annual Loft Film Fest lit up the desert November 9-13, 2016 with an extraordinary line-up of stellar films, guests and special events at the Loft Cinema in Tucson, Arizona! The 2013 award marks the first time a screenwriting team has earned the honor. The USC Libraries will present the award to McMurtry and Ossana at the 25th-anniversary Scripter Award ceremony on Saturday, February 9, 2013. The Literary Achievement Award is an additional honor—distinct from the annual Scripter Award—that recognizes writers who have made significant, sustained contributions to the art of adaptation throughout their careers. USC Libraries Dean Catherine Quinlan and the Friends of the USC Libraries established the Scripter Literary Achievement Award in 2008. “We feel honored to receive the prestigious USC Libraries Scripter Literary Achievement Award, while well aware that we do so owing a debt to the many novelists and writers whose works we have adapted,” said Ossana and McMurtry of their selection. In addition to their 2006 Academy Award win for Best Adapted Screenplay for Brokeback Mountain, the pair has written two novels, nearly twenty original feature film scripts, and four award-winning miniseries. • Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Adapted Screenplays
Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.

  • A Film by Kirsten Johnson
presents filmswelike CAMERAPERSON A FILM BY KIRSTEN JOHNSON A Big Mouth Productions and Fork Films production A boxing match in Brooklyn; life in postwar Bosnia and Herzegovina; the daily routine of a Nigerian midwife; an intimate family moment at home: these scenes and others are woven into Cameraperson, a tapestry of footage captured over the twenty-five-year career of documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson. Through a series of episodic juxtapositions, Johnson explores the relationships between image makers and their subjects, the tension between the objectivity and intervention of the camera, and the complex interaction of unfiltered reality and crafted narrative. A work that combines documentary, autobiography, and ethical inquiry, Cameraperson is both a moving glimpse into one filmmaker’s personal journey and a thoughtful examination of what it means to train a camera on the world. United States • 2016 • 102 minutes • Color • 1.85:1 aspect ratio • In English, Bosnian, Arabic, Dari, Hausa, and Fur, with English subtitles • Format: DCP Canadian bookings and inquries: mike@filmswelike.com Canadian publicity: mallory@filmswelike.com DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT The joys of being a documentary cameraperson are endless and obvious: I get to share profound intimacy with the people I film, pursue remarkable stories, be at the center of events as they unfold, travel, collaborate, and see my work engage with the world. I experience physical freedom and the chance for artistic expression and discovery every time I hold a camera. No wonder I’ve been doing it for twenty-five years and love my life. And yet, the dilemmas I face while holding my camera are formidable.

  • A Thousand Thoughts: a Live Documentary by Sam Green and Kronos Quartet
KRONOS PERFORMING ARTS ASSOCIATION commissioning & presentation opportunity Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sam Green and Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet have teamed up to create A Thousand Thoughts: A Live Documentary by Sam Green and Kronos Quartet. Drawing from Kronos’ past, present, and future, this wildly creative multimedia experiment blends live music and narration with archival footage and filmed interviews with Kronos collaborators Philip Glass, Tanya Tagaq, Steve Reich, Wu Man, and Terry Riley. As Green tells the multi-decade and continent-spanning story of the groundbreaking string quartet, he crafts an important record and exploration of late 20th– and early 21st–century music. Transcending the typical live cinema event, A Thousand Thoughts quickly becomes a meditation on music itself—the act of listening to it closely, the experience of feeling it deeply, and the power that it has to change the world. A Thousand Thoughts will premiere in early 2018, and the piece will tour in the 2018/19 Season as a part of Kronos’ 45th anniversary. The portability and scalability of the production will enable A Thousand Thoughts to be presented at a wide range of performance, music, film, and multi-genre venues. Kronos Performing Arts Association: A Thousand Thoughts Proposal, page 2 A recent grant recipient from the Sundance Documentary Fund, A Thousand Thoughts will be similar to Sam Green’s past “live documentary” works: he will stand at stage right, narrating the Kronos story and cueing projected photos, videos, and sound bites from a laptop onto a screen, while Kronos is center stage playing a live score. Using this combination of concert, film, and lecture, Green will travel chronologically through different chapters and moments from Kronos’ history, all the while maintaining editorial independence and critical distance.
